Blind surfer Matt Formston s wave to glory: I really wanted to make my mark

Normal text size Very large text size Matt Formston paces the car park at Lennox Point in far northern NSW like a sugared-up kid waiting to pounce on the end-of-party lolly bags. Many goals have been set during the COVID-19 pandemic, some quickly broken, others set in stone. Formston has been dreaming of surfing enormous barrelling waves. He wants to stand inside a 10- to 15-foot screamer – for some arcane reason, surfers firmly adhere to imperial measurements – with a curtain of water curling over the top of him, the ocean spitting and snarling at the temerity of his intrusion. Even in the madness of youth, when broken limbs are laughed off more readily than in middle age, there are no guarantees when a human flings themselves down the front of a big wave. In Formston’s case all bets are off: he’s nearly 95 per cent blind.

NSW COVID cases grow by 124; infectious in community numbers rise

Advertisement NSW has recorded its highest daily COVID-19 case numbers in the current outbreak, with 124 locally acquired cases, as Premier Gladys Berejiklian warns the state needs to brace itself “for cases to go up even higher”. The number of cases infectious in the community was a record 48, which is the number health authorities say needs to be close to zero before restrictions are lifted. “Given that number of infectious in the community, I’m expecting case numbers to go up even higher,” Ms Berejiklian said on Thursday. “It’s really important for us to scoop up all the possible cases that are out there, and we’re also finding cases in workers in the required tests every three days.”
