Area schools planning in-person graduations for 2021 seniors

Last year, there wasn t any pomp and circumstance or groups of mortarboards sailing through the air as graduation ceremonies were canceled amid the pandemic.
Most seniors walked across the stage without their classmates in private ceremonies attended by their parents and a few school administrators.
Things are looking a little better for this year s seniors as area school districts are planning to host in-person graduation ceremonies. While some still are in the planning stages, others have set the time and place for the celebration.
Whatever the plans, school officials echoed the same sentiment – seniors deserve to be able to celebrate the culmination of their academic career with their peers, family and friends. ....

The Massillon school board is talking vaccines, plans for graduation

DISCUSSION:
 Superintendent Paul Salvino said the rollout of vaccines for staff members is set to begin Feb. 1.
District officials have been in ongoing conversations with the Massillon Health Department since the pandemic began and were set to meet Thursday to discuss more details on how the immunization will be administered.
A few buildings are set to get the shots Feb. 1 followed by the remaining staff members, he said. Plans call for health department staff to come to the schools to give the vaccine.
The collaboration with the Massillon City Health Department has been so amazing, he said. Since March when all this jumped off there has been countless conversations with (Director) Terri (Argent) and others. ....

Uncertainty surrounds Geauga Maple Fest


CHARDON — The sweet smell of maple syrup will hopefully fill the air once again this spring for the annual Maple Festival if the Geauga County Health Department accepts a modified plan for the event.
Festival President Annie Royal presented a proposal to City Council last week as a modification to the traditional Maple Festival reducing or suspending most of the festival events and activities to promote a healthy community as the worldwide coronavirus pandemic continues.
“It was very important to me that we have a plan moving forward with the Maple Festival and in regard to the pandemic,” Ms. Royal said at the Jan. 14 meeting. “Last year when we had to cancel, we saw that it was important to the Chardon community and the main goal of the Maple Festival is to promote the education of maple syrup production and also to bring together our community.” ....
