Grass Valley staple closes after 31 years of homestyle cooking By Rebecca O Neil | Staff Writer Paulette’s Country Kitchen celebrated its imminent closure with biscuits and gravy, homestyle fries and fried eggs just two months shy of the Grass Valley restaurant’s 32nd anniversary. On Monday the restaurant’s parking lot was full. Inside, nearly every booth was occupied as regulars savored their last bites of Paulette Rickard’s fruit pies and French toast. Diners signed a framed illustration of the restaurant to express their appreciation for Paulette and John Rickard. Rebecca O’Neil Paulette Rickard, 64, caught COVID-19 in November and closed her restaurant for three weeks. When Rickard announced the sale of her physical location in January she was still recovering from symptoms of the virus.

The latest take on progress for Grass Valley comes in the form of a Wendy’s a fast food burger chain that plans on demolishing Paulette’s Country Kitchen and installing a drive-thru. It’s one of those developments that has half the community shrugging its shoulders and the other half either outraged or already prepping for a burger run. After all, it’s a burger joint. What’s the big deal? Well, turns out it’s a beefy deal to a lot of folks, and one you won’t just find in Nevada County.

Fans of Frostys and square burgers will be able to get their Baconator fix in Grass Valley. The Grass Valley Planning Commission on Tuesday voted unanimously to approve development of a Wendy’s drive-thru restaurant at 875 Sutton Way. The fast food chain will demolish and replace the building that is now Paulette’s Country Kitchen, reducing the size and adding 250 feet of outdoor eating space. Owner of Paulette’s, Paulette Rickard, said last month that she is selling the building and retiring after 30 years. Wendy’s will join at least a half dozen other fast food chain restaurants in what’s sometimes known as Grass Valley’s “BurgerBasin”
