Dinosaur National Monument is an excellent place to visit. The quarry there probably has the best in situ displays of dinosaur fossils in the world as this one dinosaur-rich layer is now exposed vertically. Flaming Gorge is also scenic and will take you into Wyoming. My favorite town in Wyoming is Pinedale, which would be somewhat of a detour for you, and one of my favorite national park system sites is Fossil Butte National Monument, great for the fossils, but it s nice for its isolated nature in the high Wyoming desert with few tourists and an abundance of present day wildlife to accompany those excellent fossils from the past. For a little history, South Pass, where the Oregon Trail crossed the Continental Divide.
