CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - State Superintendent Molly Spearman said she was reading the Governorâs most recent executive order to make masks options in schools for the first time last night when school leaders started reaching out to her with questions.
âTo be honest with you it has caused much commotion and chaos across many of our schools and communities in South Carolina,â Spearman told reporters Thursday. âThere was no time for school districts to prepare, or very little time, or any form for parents to fill out to sign.â

COLUMBIA, S.C. State lawmakers are discussing several important topics this week including teacher salaries, hate crimes and LGBTQ rights. Below are three bills to keep an eye on.
First, House Bill 3609 aims to unfreeze teacher salary step increases. Supporters are hoping this bill hits the Governor’s desk this week.
It resumes teachers’ regular salary bumps that were put on hold last year due to the pandemic. Teachers have been pushing to reinstate the pay raises, saying it’s unfair to take away their promised money during this strenuous time.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - South Carolina officials announced the state will move to phase 1b of its vaccine distribution plan on Monday, March 8.
This will allow roughly 2.7 million people in the state to get the vaccine, officials said.
It includes teachers, essential workers, and everyone 55 and older. People at higher risk for severe COVID-19 disease because of medical conditions, or living or work conditions, are also included.
