Small businesses and frontline workers continue to be impacted by the pandemic
January 12, 2021
FARGO, N.D. Danette Nicoloff of Fargo is a dance mom at heart.
“Right now, we should be fundraising for dance. That’s what we do,” she explains. “When the dance season essentially was canceled because of COVID, there was a real void in my life.”
Rather than put her fundraising skills to bed, she decided to fill that void with an initiative stretching across the Fargo-Moorhead metro.
“It just kind of came to me: Hey, why not raise money to buy food for frontline workers and pay area restaurants to do it?”
The Joy Project
The buy-a-meal, share-a-meal project isn t the only way Urban Foods Catering is helping those in need this holiday season. They ve also partnered with The Joy Project, a local effort to provide Christmas meals to those living in homeless shelters or low-income housing projects organized by Marisa Bengston-Loerzel.
Bengston-Loerzel founded The Joy Project in 2013 after noticing a school bus dropping children off at the Grand Inn in Moorhead. The first thing I did was ask myself what a school bus was doing at a hotel. I thought maybe their parents worked there. Not long after it dawned on me that they were going home. That they lived in the hotel, she said.

FARGO Urban Foods Catering is busy taking orders from families wanting a little beef tenderloin and the fixings for their Christmas meal.
On Christmas Eve, Urban Foods will be feeding over 450 people in need as part of the Joy Project. Because of the pandemic, no volunteers could cook for the group, so the catering company stepped up.
