KMT needs to recognize US’ shift on Taiwan ties By Tommy Lin 林逸民 On April 14, a delegation of retired US officials arrived in Taiwan for a three-day visit. Anyone with a basic understanding of Taiwan-US diplomatic circles will understand the significance of former US deputy secretaries of state Richard Armitage and James Steinberg’s inclusion in the delegation. The next day, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga met with US President Joe Biden at the White House for a leaders’ summit. Afterward, they released a joint statement containing strong language on Taiwan, which caused Japan’s four largest media organizations to lead with Taiwan as their top stories: a situation without precedent.

Taiwan lauds stance of US, Japan on China UNDERSCORING COMMITMENT: Cross-strait issues have become a concern for the Indo-Pacific region and the world, Presidential Office spokesman Xavier Chang said By Lin Chia-nan / Staff reporter The Presidential Office yesterday welcomed a joint statement by the US and Japan that underscores their commitment to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. The statement, issued by the White House after a meeting between US President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, highlighted the countries’ deepening partnership on defense including of cyber and space defense as well as on key technologies, healthcare and the climate.
