Where Chicago Bears Are Better for 2021 - Sports Illustrated Chicago Bears News, Analysis and More

The season of talent acquisition has nearly passed for NFL teams. Some will go into OTAs and minicamp and determine they need to add a low-priced free agent who are still on the market. Virtually every single player left unsigned by the end of OTAs is someone hoping to find a job and be paid, not someone who can make a big impact. There are always a few big-contract guys who slip through the cracks and must take a one-year offer for lesser money. By and large, teams have their rosters and barring a late unusual trade like the Bears pulled off in 2018 with Khalil Mack, or someone being cut and then added, the rosters will be set.

Bears will release left tackle Charles Leno

Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images The Bears are releasing left tackle Charles Leno, sources confirmed Monday, just days after the team appeared to draft his replacement. The Bears will save $9 million in salary cap space by cutting Leno with a post-June 1 designation. The team needs that money; they had the smallest amount in salary cap space in the NFL entering the draft. The Bears traded up to take Oklahoma State tackle Teven Jenkins in the second round (39th overall) Friday. General manager Ryan Pace said at the time that Jenkins could play either left or right tackle. Saturday night, when asked directly about Leno’s future, Pace refused to comment.
