11 WIESBADEN, Germany – Brig. Gen. Jed Schaertl, Deputy Commanding General for Mobilization and Reserve Affairs stopped by the Armed Services Blood Program blood drive May 18 to recognize the Reserve Soldiers working with the ASBP and gave a lifesaving blood donation too.
“It’s always great when I can get out and see Reserve component Soldiers supporting our active duty mission, supporting our family members and the community,” Schaertl said.
Staff Sgt. Nkrumah Alladin, non-commissioned officer in charge of the Reserve Soldiers assigned to Armed Services Blood Bank Center - Europe, escorted the general around to the different stations where he spoke with the blood drive team about their roles.
GCI announced that it will conduct a marine survey as it continues to push ahead with its goal of bringing high-speed broadband internet to the Aleutian Islands and five other rural Alaska communities by late 2022.
According to a news release on Thursday, GCI will partner with Matanuska Valley-based Benthic GeoScience to conduct the survey using the R/V Norseman II, a fishing vessel repurposed for the upcoming assignment.Â
The survey is part of GCIâs Alaska United Aleutians Fiber Project, funded by a $25 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agricultureâs ReConnect program and $33 million from GCI. Once completed, it would provide high-speed internet to Unalaska and Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians, as well as Larsen Bay on Kodiak, King Cove, Sand Point, Akutan and Chignik Bay.

The Captiva Erosion Prevention District’s commission decided on the contractor, bank for the municipal bond loan and bond counsel for the beach renourishment project at its recent meeting.
On May 10, the commissioners voted 4-0 to accept the recommendation of both its staff and consultants to award the bid for the upcoming project to Great Lakes Dredge & Dock. APTIM Coastal Planning & Engineering and Coastal Protection Engineering a subcontractor for APTIM had previously provided the CEPD with a bid recommendation letter, which staff concurred with.
Vice Chair John Silvia had an excused absence from the meeting.
