Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian s search for the final spot on his coaching staff officially came to an end on Thursday, when the school announced the hiring of former Montana State head coach Jeff Choate as its linebackers coach.
Jeff is an awesome final piece to an assistant coaching staff that, as I’ve said before, I’ll put up against anyone in the country,” Sarkisian said. “He is a highly-respected, accomplished coach who has a long history of working with outstanding defenses and developing players. When you watch the players he’s coached, they play hard, are fundamentally sound and he clearly does an exceptional job with them.
As mentioned, Sark is currently in pursuit of putting together a championship-caliber support staff at Texas, something Herman failed to do with his initial hires and staff overhaul at the end of the 2019 season. Most roles have been finalized, but there are still a few key positions that have yet to be filled, including defensive coordinator.

Bleacher Report ranks the Texas Longhorns’ decision to hire Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian as the program’s new head coach as the best of the offseason cycle.
From Bleacher Report: “While no single reason led to Tom Herman’s dismissal, his lack of creativity on offense will be a defining memory. Based on what Steve Sarkisian did as the offensive coordinator at Alabama, that portion of the Longhorns’ concerns should be gone. . Washington’s Kwiatkowski will serve as the defensive coordinator, but the staff otherwise has a strong Crimson Tide influence. Sark brought in Kyle Flood as offensive coordinator, landed top recruiter Jeff Banks to oversee special teams and coach tight ends and added Alabama analyst A.J. Milwee as the quarterbacks coach. You’re not going to find a projection that he’ll win a national title

Death, taxes, and coaching turnover.
As the early continuity in the Tom Herman era dissolved with seven new assistant coaches last season, some Texas players will be on their third position coach in as many seasons.
So it’s difficult to understate the importance of new Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian getting his initial hires right. In fact, as much as recruiting and development will define his tenure on the Forty Acres, the ability of Sarkisian to get his initial coaching staff right may ultimately determine whether he succeeds or fails as the head coach of the Longhorns. After all, it’s those coaches who will bear a large responsibility for evaluations during the recruiting process and improvement once those players get on campus.
