Vacancies, no candidates in many municipal elections in Lewis County

LOWVILLE — There are 14 village and town offices throughout Lewis County that have no candidates to fill them after the deadline for party line petitions passed Thursday, but there are some offices that will have both primary and Election Day battles. “There are a few good races shaping up, but the real story this year is that there are so many positions without any candidates,” Democratic Commissioner of the county Board of Elections Lindsay Burriss said. “It’s more than I’ve seen before.” Tax collectors and council members are the majority of positions that have no candidates so far. The towns each have two council positions up for election this year, but five towns have only one candidate that filed petitions under one of the major political party lines.

Plainview man sentenced to 14 months for role in jail escape

Plainview man sentenced to 14 months for role in jail escape U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix on Thursday told Juan Anthony Cordero that the facts of his case outweighed the lenient punishment both his defense attorney and federal prosecutors requested.  However, the judge acknowledged Cordero s role after his arrest in the capture of the man he helped escape from a South Plains jail and reconsidered the heavier punishment he planned to dole out and sentenced Cordero to 14 months in a federal prison.  Cordero, 25, has been held at the Lubbock County Detention Center since August and faced up to five years in federal prison after pleading guilty in November to a count of assisting escape from federal custody.
