Find out what is happening in your Northumberland town or village

Stocksfield Ian Warburton Stocksfield Retired Men’s Association will meet on Zoom on Thursday 15 April, commencing at 11am. Peter Jackson, Chairman of the Nenthead Mines Conservation Society and an expert in his field, will be talking about Mining in the North Pennines. Nenthead Mines is a fascinating and historic place at Nenthead, near Alston. This remote valley is covered by remains from the lead and zinc mining industry of the North Pennines, including mine entrances, watercourses, dressing-floors and buildings. The site is famous for its geology and is notable for rare lichens and plants growing on the metal-rich mine dumps. Most of the valley is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. If you would like to join this event, please send a message to the Stocksfield Retired Men’s Association Facebook page and they will send you the Zoom link.

Miners Lamp campaign to buy Ebenezer Methodist Chapel in West Wylam

A CHARITY has launched a fundraising campaign to raise the money needed to buy a former Methodist Chapel, with the view of creating a new community hub. The Miners Lamp’s Crowdfunder follows a petition by Prudhoe Town Councillor Russ Greig, who is a trustee at the charity, to ‘save’ the building from development . The Ebenezer Methodist Chapel, in West Wylam, Prudhoe, has been marketed for sale by Foster Maddison and is billed as a ‘development opportunity’ – subject to planning and the lifting of covenants. “The Ebenezer Chapel is under threat. You can help us save it for the benefit of the community,” said Russ.

Essity Prudhoe Mill donation keeps Northumberland communities Covid-safe

A DONATION of paper towel dispensers by Essity Prudhoe Mill is helping local charities and community groups to keep staff, volunteers and visitors safe by encouraging frequent handwashing in line with Covid-19 guidelines. County councillor Gordon Stewart, who represents Prudhoe South, helped the mill identify a number of suitable locations that so far include Prudhoe and Stonehaugh Parish Halls, The Miners Lamp, The Torch Centre, Hexham, Adderlane Primary School and St Matthews Primary School. “This is a very welcome donation, and I was pleased to lend my support when Essity asked for help in identifying where these dispensers would be of most use , Gordon said. “This is another generous gesture from a business that has not only spent hundreds of thousands of pounds in keeping its employees Covid-secure, but has also donated huge amounts of toilet roll, face masks and now paper towel dispensers to the local community.
