Jeff LaHurd: Demolition of landmarks we have witnessed in Sarasota

After the bank failed the building was transformed into the Orange Blossom Hotel, and welcomed guests for many years; today it serves as exclusive Orange Blossom Tower Condominiums. Interestingly the 1920s era Otis elevator is still operational. One of the threads that runs throughout Sarasota’s history though, is a singular disregard for those places which made this area so unique and desirable. It does not matter if the site in question is on the Local Register of Historic Places, or the National Register of Historic places. Nor is it a concern that organizations such as the Historical Society of Sarasota County, the Sarasota Alliance for Historic Preservation, the John Ringling Centre Foundation, the Friends of Friendly Oaks, and STOP form to prevent historic losses. Community outcry has never stopped demolition. The deafness of city leaders underscores the city hall statue by Jack Cartlidge, “Nobody’s Listening.”

Fire companies recognized

If you recall a few weeks ago, I stated that I was thinking of plunging into a few book writing projects. This is something that goes beyond just sitting down and writing a news article. For the past several years I have been contemplating writing a book on the Broad Top area’s three volunteer fire companies. I think the time has come to put the project on the front burner and get it done. As the old saying goes, I have been “chasing fire trucks” for many years going to fires, motor vehicle accidents and other emergencies for both The Daily News and this newspaper. Believe you me folks this is not something I enjoyed doing because there was always suffering and loss involved, but as the late Jon Baughman and I agreed, it was news and people needed to be kept informed on what was happening around them.

The Short and Savory List

The Short and Savory List Need something to tide you over until dinner? These delicious locales can quell your hunger, with selections such as an ‘ahi poketini, hummus with fresh local veggies and a real pizzaiolo-made pizza. February 25, 2021 The Sea House Restaurant at Napili Kai When my friend Maria said, “OMG! Her food reminds me of [a certain Top Chef’s] creations,” I knew I had to taste chef Sam Basques’s dishes. And her steak crudo and ‘ahi poke-tini (pronounced po-kay-tee-nee) definitely met the criteria for onolicious delight. For the steak crudo, the New York strip was cooked rare then sliced thin and served with Guamanian finadene, a Chamorro sauce akin to salsa. With just the right amount of tartness steeped in umami, the sauce tastes of tamari, vinegar, jalapeños and onions, and the dish is finished with a seven-spice chili oil. It paired perfectly with an ice-cold Bikini Blonde from Maui Brewing Company.
