THE pandemic has felt like “a wrecking ball on my shoulders,” according to a man who suffered multiple seizures a day due to the stress of Covid-19. Billy Hendren’s epilepsy symptoms – triggered by stress – became so bad at the outset of lockdown that his family began taking each day hour by hour. The 26-year-old Ayrshire man also has hydrocephalus and additional support needs and struggled to cope with isolation and loss or routine as Scotland shut down. His social support workers could no longer make twice-weekly visits and he was unable to attend mass through the week and at weekends.

A MUM who cares for her epileptic son has spoken out about how the Covid-19 pandemic has affected their lives. Jan Sproul lives with her son Peter, 26, in Springburn. He was diagnosed with Landau Kleffner Syndrome, a rare form of epilepsy, when he was just two-and-a-half years old. Due to the condition not being caught in time, Peter will live with it for the rest of his life. Jan, 50, said: “He didn’t talk fully until he was six years old. He can’t be left alone; he has got to have 24-hour care. He can’t even go out by himself so can’t live a so called ‘normal’ life.

Every year the charity to get politicians, business leaders, schools, health professionals and members of the public to think and talk about epilepsy and help raise money for those living with the condition. Epilepsy Scotland is also asking people to wear purple on the March 26 to raise awareness of epilepsy and donate £3 to the charity by texting PURPLEDAY to 70450.
