Lobbying: Scotland Office meetings dominated by big business

Big business including oil and renewable energy, farming, fishing, finance and whisky dominated Scotland Office ministers’ meetings last year, analysis by The Ferret has found.    We looked at all external meetings logged in 2020 by Alister Jack, Secretary of State for Scotland, UK Government ministers for Scotland David Duguid and Iain Stewart, as well as Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross, who was deputy Secretary of State until he resigned in May that year.     Analysis showed that almost 90 per cent (168 of 188) of these meetings were with industry bodies and business groups.    Scottish Office ministers only met with two charities last year, according to their diaries – The Trussell Trust and the Marine Conservation Society UK.

The farming union is calling on Environment Minister Rebecca Pow to act now to make the use of sky lanterns illegal. The letter details how in other countries the release of sky lanterns is considered a crime due to the harm they cause animals, habitats and the countryside.

47 bags of rubbish collected in Workington beach clean-up

Workington Nature Partnership volunteers have braved the cold and wrapped up warm to venture out in December and clean litter off beaches three times during December. This takes the number of volunteer hours to 55 and they hauled a massive total of 47 bags of rubbish over the three clean-ups. Susan Cammish, nature ranger of the partnership, said: “It was a great response from members of the local community, some of whom brought their children out for some pre-Christmas family time, as well as contributing to a great cause”. “Removing this rubbish from the beach is hard work, with heavy, awkward loads needing to be brought back to a central collection point for removal.
