Surrounded by family, Sheriff Erik Apperson announced his resignation, effective October 1, at a Del Norte Board of Supervisors meeting on Tuesday.
Apperson said he and his family would be moving, as they recently discovered their medical needs cannot be met in Del Norte. He also said he will be pursuing a career change outside of law enforcement.
âI need to show my wife and children what sort of father and husband I can be, not what sort of Sheriff I am. They have stood beside me, as they are now, throughout this entire process. They are the best part of me and I need to love them accordingly,â said Apperson.

U.S. Highway 101 was open to one-lane travel Tuesday night after another week of landslide activity blocked the road at Last Chance Grade.
Crews have been working on the road since last week, when precipitation caused the hillside above the highway to crumble down, blocking both lanes for extended periods of time.
As of Tuesday evening, crews warned motorists of possible 30-minute delays overnight, as well as three-hour delays scheduled between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. to allow for removal and prevention work.
âWe will continue constant monitoring of the slide and will provide updates here as we receive them,â Caltrans District 1 officials wrote in Facebook updates Tuesday. âThank you very much to our crews, our slide catchment and those motorists maintaining patience and attentiveness for keeping the slide area safe.â
Caltrans Reopens U.S. 101 To One-Way Controlled Traffic
Caltrans reopened U.S. 101 at about 6 p.m. Monday, after a landslide near Last Chance Grade halted traffic for about two days.
Motorists should expect 30 minute delays and be prepared for things to change pending additional slide activity, according to a Facebook post from the agency.
The slide shuttered U.S. 101 between mile post markers 13.3 and 23.85 south of Crescent City at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Caltrans personnel spent Sunday clearing debris and reopened the highway at about 6 p.m. only to have to close it down again due to a rock fall, according to agency spokeswoman Cori Reed.
