As the Biden Administration seeks to resolve the causes of migration from Central America, migrants are finding a new militarized response as they seek refuge in the United States.Â
âThe objective is to make it more difficult to make the journey, and make crossing the borders more more difficult,â White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a press conference on April 12. âWe worked with them [the governments of Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras] to increase law enforcement at the border to deter the travel, which is a treacherous journey . . . where many lose their lives.â

Hispanic U.S. House members are pushing for an aggressive, multiyear Marshall Plan for Central America to tackle regional violence, corruption and economic devastation.
The big picture: The call for a Central American plan, similar to a U.S. program that rebuilt Western Europe following World War II, comes as both political parties and the Biden administration struggle to find short-term solutions to the ongoing humanitarian crisis. The price tag: TBD.
Hundreds of activists marched through the streets of Downtown El Paso on Saturday for the ‘We Are The 11 Million’ campaign, the largest in-person mobilization on immigration reform since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
About 300 attendees, waving American and Mexican flags and holding signs and banners, met on El Paso street in South El Paso and marched through the Downtown area to San Jacinto Plaza.
The campaign calls for a commitment to achieving holistic immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship for all 11 million undocumented, the demilitarization of the southern border, and increased transparency and accountability among federal immigration enforcement agencies, a news release said.
