A dozen mayors wrote to Big Ten officials last fall. Football was returning to their communities, and they wanted help.
“We humbly request,” the mayors wrote, “a few practical measures that the Big Ten Conference can take to ensure we have the tools we need to combat the spread of COVID-19.”
A humble request. The words are telling: about where power lies, and where it doesn’t. And about where the leaders of these Big Ten college towns often dwarfed in size and in influence by their university neighbors fit into the conversation. Which is to say, often on the side.

One day after helping Alabama capture the national title once again, Steve Sarkisian was formally introduced as the head coach of the Texas Longhorns.
In his introductory press conference, the issue of the relationship between the football team and the school song, The Eyes of Texas, was brought up. But as Sarkisian sees it, it isn t an issue at all.
“I know this much, ‘The Eyes of Texas’ is our school song,” Sarkisian said. We’re going to sing that song. We’re going to sing that proudly.”
Some players lack of participation in the postgame playing of The Eyes of Texas this past season under former coach Tom Herman became a rolling controversy of sorts around the Longhorns. Several players protested the song due to its racist origins. (The song was performed at minstrel shows.)

The national championship game between Alabama and Ohio State on Monday, which saw the Crimson Tide dominate the Buckeyes 52-24, will go down in the history books as one of the least watched title games ever.
According to Sports Media Watch, the game was the least-watched in the College Football Playoff (2014-present) and BCS (1998-2013) era. It also was a 27% decline from last year s national championship game between Clemson and LSU. Both of this season s College Football Playoff semifinal games drew larger numbers (19.2 million for Ohio State-Clemson and 18.9 million for Alabama-Notre Dame) the first that s happened with a semifinal in BCS/CFP history, according to Sports Media Watch.
PROVO By any account, either blue-goggled or shades of envy, BYU s 2020 football season was unlike any other.
From playing in a global pandemic while other programs were planning to push to the spring, to finishing ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since 2009, there has been no other season quite like 2020.
The Cougars traveled from coast to coast, built up several rivalries and established new ones, as they were at one point the only team competing in college football located west of El Paso, looking for games and trying to garner national respect. Along the way, they found a way, thanks in large part to its mantra: any team, any time, any place or at least, anyone that was willing to play amid several layers of COVID-19 restrictions.
