This past weekend the Lawrence University Department of Theatre Arts performed their version of The Domino Effect, a play written by Fin Kennedy. The production was directed by Kathy Privatt and stage managed by junior Riley Seib. The play, performed in the campus’ Stansbury Theater, is set in Hamlets, London, and follows the life of a girl named Amina who refuses to speak, played by senior Lexi Praxl and sophomore Frankie Sobel. Amina grows up with her mother, Nibijah, played by sophomore Madeline Guest, as well as her father, Samit, played by freshman Jon Winkler. Amina’s father is a clockmaker and struggles to keep the family financially afloat. In turn, Amina’s mother abandons the two to go work in America. ....

A “Camping 101” event, sponsored by Outdoor Recreational Club (ORC), will be held overnight today, May 14, starting at 6:15 p.m. This event aims to teach students some basic camping skills in preparation for any future camping activities. The event will start with the “Camping Basics” section. All participants will be meeting at Trevor Hall at 6:15 p.m. and then moving to various stations for different learning activities around Main Hall Green and SLUG Campfire in small groups of 10 participants from 7 to 9 p.m., according to sophomore Shae Erlandson, the co-president of ORC. ....
Photo by Alana Melvin. Juan Hernandez performed his junior recital in the chapel on Saturday, April 24, for a mixed in-person and virtual audience. The chapel was able to hold fifty socially distanced guests, and a livestream was recorded for those unable to attend in person. Hernandez played four unique pieces for a captivated audience. In preparing his lineup, he said that he wanted to share something different and include a diverse program that would stand out. The opening piece, “Three Romances,” composed by Clara Schumann, included lyrical and soft movements. “It was important not only to match the style but to evoke emotions through the piece,” Hernandez said. The piece soared through three movements, which demonstrated Hernandez’s emotive playing and musicality. The second piece, “Danza de la Mariposa,” composed by Valerie Coleman, incorporated Latin styles and reflected nature. ....
Photo by Alana Melvin. Junior Alex Lewis’s cello recital was on Saturday, April 24. Hosted both in person in the Lawrence Memorial Chapel and streamed online, Lewis says the recital was the most important part of his school year and one of the most important parts of his undergraduate career. Lewis played two pieces: Robert Schumann’s “Adagio and Allegro,” accompanied by senior Hung Nguyen on the piano, and Benjamin Britten’s “First Suite for Solo Cello.” The Schumann piece started the recital with a bang, bouncing between higher and lower pitches and creating some beautiful melodies with Nguyen’s piano. This first piece, however, was reserved compared to what followed. Britten’s cello suite is an epic adventure, marked by distinct, unique sections of heavy chords, erratic plucked sections and dissonant harmonics. These two pieces, along with Lewis’s commanding presence on stage, made for an impressive and impactful outing. ....
