For 2020 IBM India’s research and development centre emerged as the second highest in terms of filing patents. Indian engineers and researchers filed 930 patents. More importantly, the recently launched IBM Cloud Satellite, a significant play in its shift of being a company focused on hybrid cloud, data and AI, saw important contribution from India. Sandip Patel, MD, IBM India-South Asia in an interview with Shivani Shinde spoke about IBM’s changing business focus, impact on India and rising importance of IBM India’s research centre. Edited excerpts… How will the restructuring that IBM is going through globally impact India? IBM India is a microcosm of IBM global, we have all of our investment that we have around the world brands, global mission, software labs, hardware labs, research labs in India too. We have been a proponent of the thought that we are in India with the agenda of make in India for India and for the world. This has been our agenda and ....
Covid update: 18 February 2021 18 Feb 2021 A round up of this week s coronavirus-related news and countermeasures from the photonics industry. Components of the Clip Covid Test. Click for info. Diagnostics company Luminostics has announced the receipt of emergency use authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration and production scale-up activities for its Clip Covid Rapid Antigen Test to meet demand in the fight against Covid-19. The test is a lateral flow immunoluminescent assay that uses glow-in-the-dark nanochemistry along with a smart phoneâs optics, an inexpensive adapter, and artificial intelligence to detect SARS-CoV-2 viral antigens from nasal swabs in around 30 minutes. ....
Power/Performance Bits: Feb. 8 Transparent sensor; graphene-enhanced heat pipes; large perovskite solar cells. Transparent sensor Researchers at Osaka University created a thin, flexible, transparent sensor using silver nanowire networks. High-resolution printing was used to fabricate the centimeter-scale cross-aligned silver nanowire arrays, with reproducible feature sizes from 20 to 250 micrometers. As a proof-of-concept for functionality, they used their arrays to detect electrophysiological signals from plants. A patterned polymer surface was created to define the subsequent nanowire feature size. Using a glass rod to sweep silver nanowires across the pattern led to either parallel or cross-aligned nanowire networks. “The sheet resistance of patterns less than 100 micrometers ranged from 25 to 170 ohms per square, and the visible light transmittance at 550 nanometers was 96% to 99%,” said Teppei Araki, an assistant professor at Osaka University. “Thes ....
A Design Lab and workshop Robotics/Mechatronics Lab Technology-enabled active learning classrooms Research labs for STEM disciplines Reservable small group study rooms Student Club Hub Many of these spaces will feature an investment of approximately $2 million in new, state-of-the-art equipment. The MSB currently serves over 1,150 students pursuing STEM majors in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics, Computer Science and Information Systems, Mechanical Engineering, and Mathematics, as well as many pre-health and pre-nursing students, and provides engaging learning spaces for all UM-Flint students fulfilling their general education courses. Susan Gano-Phillips, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, led the planning for the MSB expansion and describes the new addition as a paradigm shift for UM-Flint. ....
