police and fire, it was there's a shooter at this locate. where there wasn't a shooter at that locate. >> reporter: as investigators continue their probe, fox confirms two months before sunday's massacre, a man named stephen paddock believed to be the gunman looked hotel room in chicago overlooking the site where another music festival la-la palooza was taking place. but paddock did not show up in chicago. this as another news report ci citing law enforcement sources says the gunman appears to have researched possible attack& locations in boston. specifically hotels around boston's fenway park. now police in both boston and chicago say they're investigating. >> we're aware of the media reports, but because it's an-going investigation i'm not going to speak any more to it than that. >> reporter: investigators confirmed wednesday paddock previously rented another room in las vegas in september. around the time the live is beautiful alternative music festival was taking place. >> paddock ren add room at ogden hotel and in downtown las vegas. >> reporter: police say paddock had no criminal record non outward signs of extremist ideology. the sheriff here in las vegas now openly questioning weather paddock had help. in las vegas, caroline shively, fox 29 news. now authorities believe one much the reasons the gunman was able to fire off so many shots so fast was because he used a device called a bump stock. fox 29's jeff cole spoke to a gun range owner about this device and joins us live in the studio with that part of the story. jeff. >> reporter: news on bump stocks is breaking as he we come on the air tonight. nra is urging the federal government to review weather bump stocks should remain. tonight what they are and how they work. >> rapid fire as fast as you can. [ gunfire ] >> seth says he served three years in the u.s. army including eight months in afghanistan. he's squeezing off 200 rounds with an ar15 to show just how tiring it is even for a 22-year-old with weapons training. so how did this 64-year-old vegas shooter do it. >> it was rapid fire. they indicate that there was something other than just one person's trigger finger operating but i couldn't tell was it was. >> reporter: law enforcement sources believe he used something called a bump stock a device which fits on a semi-automatic rival an laos it to fire in rapid bursts just like what was heard in las vegas sunday night. [ gunfire ] >> reporter: videos of how to install and use bump stocks are all over the web. the devices are legal. but now members of congress from both parties seem willing to ban them in the wake of mass killings in vegas. salts man won't allow them in the door at his place. >> bump stocks are not permitted at my range. they are inherently unsafe. they require a shooter to relinquish a degree of control of firearm. >> reporter: bump stocks can easily be found for sale online. [ gunfire ] >> reporter: salts man wants to know more. he says the photos of the shooter's hotel room don't show the hundreds of shell casings which should litter the floor. and he questions how a 64-year-old man who doesn't appear physically fit is able to hold a weapon heavy with ammunition and repeatedly fire hundreds of rounds from 32 floors up. [ gunfire ] >> reporter: he asked me to rapidly fire 30 rounds from the ar15 to experience the weight of the gun and the strength needed to control it. >> the bump stock can be made to work but it requires a special skill that is not derived in one week's training, and even after you gain that skill level i doubt that you can sustain that rate of fire. >> reporter: now the national rival association opposes nearly all gun regulations nearly everything but tonight in the wake of the horror in vegas it appears ready to walk away from bump stocks. i'm jeff cole, fox 29 news. iain. >> jeff, thank you. interesting peace. skyfox over a tense police standoff in northampton county this morning police surrounding the vehicle of 61-year-old john hahn. investigators say he shot two people yesterday in lehigh township. mel linda moline called 911 and told dispatchers she and her husband joseph moline, jr., had been shot at their home. the shooter she claimed her husband's first cousin. police had been on manhunt since then trying to track down hann and noticed his truck this morning along oakland road so police surrounded the truck and he eventually surrendered. >> based upon the investigation at the present time, it is my understanding and this will have to be pursued in more detail that this was a personal dispute that was going on family related between the two cousins. it may have involved financial issues. >> police say hant was armed during the standoff. officers put local schools on lock down. hann is facing homicide an tempted homicide charges warning from police after terrifying situation in olney. a woman held at gun point and sexually assaulted in her home. police now say a neighbor stepped in to action to try to catch that man. dave schratwieser is live outside police headquarters with the details. dave? >> reporter: dawn, that 57-year-old victim is still recovering from this terrifying ordeal in the meantime her neighbor who tried to catch the suspect well he is slugging off terms like brave and heroic. >> it's just about doing the right thing. i don't need the titles. i just need to know i did the right thing. >> reporter: sitting just off camera near the spot where he confronted an armed robber tuesday morning, this olney man told fox 29 how he wrestled with the suspect. moments after he robbed and sexually assaulted his 57-year-old neighbor. >> before i knew it he tried to pull a gun on me i knocked it out of the his hand went scuffled for the gun when i got control of the gun he couldn't get it out of the my hands. >> i think the neighbor is very heroic. >> reporter: police police say the terrifying confrontation hppened moments after the 57-year-old woman was confronted by the armed robber at her back door just before 7:00 a.m. >> our offender pushed the door open and put a handgun to her forehead and ordered her to go back inside the house. >> reporter: the victim and her neighbor had come outside along this alley when they heard a brick wall fall. as the neighbor went back inside, the victim came face to face with the gunman. >> he made her go upstairs where he demanded money. he took some money and some of her property, then he sexually assaulted her. >> suspect took her car keys and headed to the rear alley where he was confronted by the next door neighbor. >> the witness our next door neighbor was able to disarm this mail and take the handgun. >> that's bravery. >> actions were very heroic. >> suspect fled but left behind his gun, fingerprints and possibly some dna. police say moments before the attack he commit add burglary a block away. may also be tied to other robberies and burglaries in the area. >> he seems to be get bolder. we're very concerned with him. >> i try to look out for all my neighbors as best i can. >> reporter: now police are reviewing surveillance video from the area. they say the suspect was wearing gloves with the fingers cut out an black hoodie with the word fresh in white letters across the back. if you have any information, you can call the special victims union. iain. >> all right. dave, thank you. one man is dead after a triple shooting in north philadelphia. the gunfire broke out at 11:30 last night along the 2500 block of north dover street. police say a 24-year-old died at the hospital. two other men another 24-year-old an 17-year-old are in stable condition right now. police do not have a description of the shooter and they also don't have a motive as of yet. a former chester county paramedic now facing charges after police say he inappropriately touched a minor he was supposed to be mentoring. west goshen police announcing the arrest of the 50-year-old kenneth mason. mason was a part-time paramedic for chester county hospital and a full-time paramedic for jefferson university hospital. according to police, mason inappropriately touched a young man who was taking part in a ride along with him. it happened in august in west chester. mason is now charged with corruption of minors and indecent assault. three men are in jail tonight after police say they caught them with over 13 pounds of raw heroin. that's $4 million worth of the deadly drug. edward torres, sergio, and alejandro grandiose were pulled over on i-95 friday by bensalem police. officers say they found a huge heroin stash hidden in their pickup truck. torres was supposed to be under house arrest when police pulled hem over. investigators say in a panic he ran but they quickly caught and arrested him. >> the cease sewer of this 6-kilogram of heroin certainly saved lives one car stop for illegal tint and officers heavily trained and very intuitive of what was going on were able to get these drugs off the street. >> the three men are currently in the bucks county prison being held on $1 million bail each. all right. let's check in on your fox 29 weather authority now. it's shaping up to be great night across our area as we take live look down continuing into the overnight time frame iain but look at high temperatures today. philadelphia 81 degrees. 82 in allentown. 84 in dover and trenton. so most locations running a good ten to almost 15 degrees above where we should be for this time of year which is 70 for the high temperature. 80 right now in trenton. 80 in millville along with dover. upper 70s as you move toward berks county the lehigh valley we do have some clouds along with a few showers off to the west. some of that will move north and west over the next several hou hours. so by 8:00 o'clock, watching toward the poconos, the lehigh valley but a lot of that will kind of fizzle out. temperatures tonight into the 60s we'll call it mostly cloudy coming up we'll talk much more about the tropics continuing to heat up deadliest mass shooting in american history. democrats have introduced a senate bill that would ban bump stocks. the device used by shooter stephen paddock to convert his guns from semi to fully automatic. >> they're going to say you give them bump stock it's going to be slippery slope. i certainly hope so. >> reporter: gun roll measures have been notoriously contentious issue but this time there does appear to be the possibility of bipartisan cooperation. some republicans say they're willing to get behind the bump stock ban while others argue it's not the right time to be talking about new legislation. >> anybody who heard the audio or saw video and heard what that sounded like, you thought that's an automatic weapon. automatic weapons have been illegal since the 19 30's. >> not in any position to say i'm going to support legislation that would outlaw them. neither do i think we should be discussing it in this arena. >> reporter: it's unclear whether president trump will support the bill. the white house says he's willing to discuss new gun control measures if they're aimed at preventing another tragedy bite one in las vegas. >> we certainly welcome that. would like to be part of that conversation. and we would like to see a clear understanding of the facts. >> reporter: some of the country's biggest gun sellers including wal*mart and cabella's have voluntarily stopped selling bump stocks but in stores where the devices are still for sale, they're selling out anxious gun owners scrambling to get them while they still can. in washington, james rosen, fox news. philadelphia police are trying to find this pair they say stole several containers of baby formula from south philadelphia target. investigators just releasing this video of the septembe september 22nd incident. according to police, the two put the formula into a bag and walk out of the store. when security guard tried to stop them investigators say the duo assaulted the guard. if you recognize them, call police. pennsylvania's attorney general is suing the nation's largest student loan company claiming it sold risky loans that cost borrowers billions of dollars. attorney general josh shapiro filing the lawsuit against the corporation and solutions llc. the ag this is naviant fund funneled people into a program that added huge interest costs when it should have placed people in an facebook page it says they are the proud parents of three birds named ralph, skittles and jade and that they occasionally come to work but are kept in a locked cage in an office away from food prep. the post goes on to say that conyers are social birds that require human socialization but will no longer be visiting at work and that this picture was taken at home. the police chief says they're photos tell a much different story. >> to openly contact, upping, the people and dispute that there were animals loose in his kitchen and clearly we have evidence supporting that. there was a cage as he stated but the cage was 5-foot bird cage in an office attached to kitchen and the cage was open and the birds were flying throughout the restaurant in the kitchen area. >> other pictures show a cat and a dirty litter box as well as electrical and code violations. all leaving a bad taste in customer's mouths. >> how they thought they can get away with that, i don't know. >> now the police chief says the owners did not have a required mercantile license and will have a court date on that. they also have to meet the county board of health standards in order to reopen. that restaurant remained don't train officers i train civilians in regards to what they should do in the case of the event would occur. >> reporter: detective joe is with the philadelphia police counter terrorism unit. it's his job to train regular people to survive the unthin unthinkable. an active shooter. >> stop being scared. realize that you can get out of this if you think about certain thing. >> reporter: experts say there are three options to protect yourself against an active shooter. run, hide or fight. your first option, find an escape path and get out evacuate whether others want you to or not. and leave your possessions behind. >> this male was shooting straight nine minutes. was there any delay? was there any kind of break in the action if he has to reload weapon you don't hear any more gunfire that's a good chance to get up and run. >> reporter: sometimes like in las vegas victims don't know where the shots are coming from. in that case find a place to hide in a bathroom or behind heavy office equipment. >> if you can't run, you need to hide somewhere. hideout of the shooter's view. somehow some way. >> reporter: if you do come face to face with a gunman -- [ gunfire ] >> reporter: -- be prepared to fight. improvise weapons. act with aggression and commit to your actions. >> worse case scenario if he approaches you in such a way you're close up and personal with it, you have the bullet and something you can do before shooting prepare, know where at least two exits are located in case you have to get out. information we all hope we of course never have to use. >> hopefully, ways to help the victims of this horrible tragedy. >> fox's elizabeth matthews shows us how one carpenter in chicago is using his skills to honor the lives lost. >> i don't have any answers and i wish at it again. building wooden crosses for the victims of the las vegas shooting. he builds them from scratch inside of his aurora workshop gives them a fresh coat of white paint and attaches a big red heart to the front. sometimes he has helpers like enrique padilla. >> i seen him working and he was by himself, and he needed help. we always stop by. people stop by all the time. >> reporter: monday morning he had another visitor. the owner of arc angels bio recovery a crime scene cleanup company. that company donated gas money for the 1700-mile trip to las vegas. >> day to day deal with, um, family that is have undergne horrific, horrific circumstances, um, we want to be able to, um, help in the community. >> reporter: with the community supporting him, he continues to build working through his own grief for his murdered father-in-law 20 years ago. he takes his compassion on the road sharing his cross displays at scenes of mass shootings around the country. most recently in orlando at the and last december in downtown chicago for hundreds of people shot and killed in 2016. >> last year 757 people were killed in chicago and i made all those crosses and do you know i gave all of them out except 25. those families have these in their homes. so i know how important it is. and back to your fox 29 weather authority. it's definitely feeling more like summer as we take live look at reading. not bad day at all out there. meteorologist scott williams will have your forecast in 15 seconds. >> those above average temperatures will continue over the next several days. high temperatures today in the low 80s. for tomorrow, low 80s the heat will likely peak for a part of the weekend we could get into the mid 80s. we're also keeping tabs on what's happening with nate in the tropics. that will likely bring us tropical moisture early next week. we need the rainfall. look at the temperatures right now. still 80 degrees in trenton. 80 right now philadelphia. 80 in millville. upper 70s right now down the shore. the cool spot still above average upper 60s right now mount pocono. so as we look at ultimate doppler we have a few showers off to the west. a lot of this will diminish but we will keep some chances in especially the pocono mountains the lehigh valley over the next several hours. in fact, we'll go hour by hour. by eight, 9:00 o'clock you can see north and west berks county the lehigh valley looking at some of those showers a lot of it fizzles before it moves into sections of central south jers jersey. delaware likely not even seeing a drop out of tonight's system. over the neck several days, the rainfall chances really don't ramp up until the latter parter of sunday into early next week. with that tropical moisture connection. so here's the bottom line. tropical storm nate 40 miles an hour winds movement to the north northwest right now at about 10 miles per hour. really doesn't have that chance to rapidly intensify right now because it's going over some of the mountainous terrain but look at the computer models by 1:00 o'clock on saturday, in the gulf of mexico, a category one hurricane. 80 miles an hour winds then making landfall sometime late saturday into sunday. it looks like right now toward the new orleans area maybe mobile, alabama, but it rapidly weakens as it moves in our direction early next week with that tropical beneficial rainfall. the code of uncertainty taking it into the gulf and look at those spaghetti plots the computer models pretty good consensus for a strike somewhere along the gulf coast once again the latter part of the weekend. the threat of tropical storm force winds moving toward new orleans as early as sunday morning. so we'll watch conditions go dwnhill there. for us, temperatures tonight pretty mild into the low to mid 60s. it will be muggy though. the humidity really starts to ramp up over the neck several days. high temperatures tomorrow, in the 80s. feeling more like summer and then take look at saturday. 85 degrees. watching a shower chance on sunday but better chances on monday. we could see an inch or two of rain. back over to you. >> all right, jillian johnson has more on this special hood. if we can't keep our own folks safe it's harder to get out there and do our job. >> firefighters they're the ones we depend on to head into the burning building when everyone sells running out. >> everybody goes into it knowing it's a dangerous job. >> reporter: while there are obvious risks associated with the job, there are also more microscopic dangers when fighting a fire up close. >> cancer rates are sky rocketing in firefighters. >> reporter: according to 2015 study conducted by the national institute for occupational safety and health, firefighters are 9% more likely than the average person to be diagnosed with cancer. and 14% more likely to be killed by cancer. >> some of the car vin know sense dangerous, you know, chemicals that we come across during your modern fires will get be a soared through the sk skin. >> reporter: but that's where fire officials in her nan dough counsel tear hoping this new head peace will play a key role in reducing the cancer risk. >> there's no -- this also has the particular barrier inside which you can feel in there. >> reporter: officials explained firefighters already wear a similar hood but this updated version they say protects against molecules penn stating the cloth and being absorbed into the skin. >> it's a little thicker. i can tell it's there more so than i can tell the other one was there. it's a little bit, um, hotter but it feels safer. >> reporter: while the cost of the new hood is roughly five times that of the old one officials and firefighters believe it's well worth it for healthier workplace. >> i feel proud to work here. i mean they care about us enough to do that. >> firefighters in chicago, san francisco and here in philadelphia were part of the study
