five aimed tonight at islands already hit hard. what's next? >> now, fox 29 news at 10:00. ♪ hurricane jose is in sight ton night we're already seeing that rough surf at the shore. >> the storm could bring gusty winds, huge swells, even tidal flooding, and we have team coverage tonight from the shore to back here in our studios with the breaking details. now, kathy, with jose off our shore lines, maria is exploding. >> absolutely. big problems with maria about to hit puerto rico. here at home we're talking about jose. not a well-defined center of circulation with this. not like irma. it's not as strong. category one storm. the stationary right now. 230 miles east of cape hatteras, north carolina. the stationary position was not expected. so that could impact the speed of this and where it is by tomorrow afternoon. with the forecast is for it to be off the coast of new jersey by late tomorro night as category one storm but most of the rain associated with it is still offshore and those tropical storm force gusts are expected to be offshore as well and that's why the national hurricane center dropped that tropical storm watch for the jersey shore. you see that yellow? those are the tropical storm force winds. they will be isolated over cape cod, far's vineyard and nantucket island. take a look at the future wind gust. we will be gusting tomorrow morning to about 26 miles an hour down the shore. inland to bound were you eight. the peak of the wind will be tomorrow late afternoon early evening. northeasterly winds at about 34 miles an hour down the shore. so not tropical storm force. so what do we expect? we expect some major beach erosion. that's for sure. gust to 40 miles an hour down the shore. rough surf, some see seas ten to 16 feet possible. some and tidal flooding at time of high tide. minor to moderate. dave kinchen has been down the shore. dave, i know the surf has been building. what's it like there now? >> reporter: well, kathy, people we've spoken with have already felt the wind intensifying and people will say they're not necessarily going to do too much but stay out of the water. this family is having fun but playing it safe in ocean city. >> we were planning on going swimming today, but with the strong rip tides and everything we've just decided to stay ankle deep and play in it this way. >> reporter: high risk of hip currents influenced by hurricane jose churning off coast i they've been a lot more careful as conditions get worse. if it was very strong yesterday. i bare get up with one wave because it took me underreport we haven't had too many people wading in far enough to worry about that at this point. hopefully we continue that tre trend. >> reporter: ocean city fire department stands ready just in case and not just for rip currents. they have 5-ton army surplus vehicles on stand by should jose cause enough flooding for water rescues. >> every time we have a possible high water situation, we always put them into effect. we'll put them at each station so they're ready to go. >> reporter: for the most part, however, penal just watched as mother nature seemed to grow slightly angrier. in atlantic city, chunks of sand carved away by the many breaking waves and in margate city -- >> my assessment don't go out past your knees. been down here for a long time. don't play with mother nature. ever. >> reporter: joanne tra pohle steers clear of the water all tomorrow as a familiar sight formed. a lake on the beach just like the summer by product of the on-going beach construction project. and it could get worse after jose. >> i guess it all remains to be seen. island is all a different shape. i hope it work out better than did it down there. >> reporter: emergency responders are watching this one closely as well. and local officials will once again have to deal with beach reflect measure many after the erosion takes place. back to you. >> all right. thank you very much, dave. free parking all week much that's what the new jersey casino reinvestment development therapy at the wave garage in atlantic city in preparation for potential hurricane jose flooding as of now the free parking lasts through thursday morning. you can park your car on the middle and top floors not on the bottom because of the possibility of flooding. so hurricane maria has blown up. the cat five storm barreling towards put tow recoat country is preparing fort second major storm this week. suing he shelves are bear at the various stores there. the extremely dangerous storm now has sustained winds of 160 miles an hour with a life-threatening storm surge. >> happening now, classes canceled after teachers walked off the job in montgomery coun county. students who should be in their first months of collars not in school. the district can't canceled classes today after the teacher's union decided to strike. classes will remain closed tomorrow. coming up in our newscast, hank flynn tells us the one sticking point for teachers. templets night septa police came to the rescue avenue pregnant woman not once but twice. officers say they found her in kensington as she was overdos overdosing. fox 29's chris o'connell is live at septa headquarters in center city. chris, this is tragic on so many levels. >> reporter: i'll tell you, lucy, it is another sad and sobering reminder of philadelphia's opioid crisis, and it all happened in front of a septa police officer tonight. police are telling us they responded to a woman seven months pregnant who was overdosing on the 1800 block of hilton street in kensington. she was rye 55ed by a septa police officer using two donations of narcan. that is the drug that reverses the effects of heroin. well police tell us the woman refused to be taken to the hospital. refused medical treatment. instead she went back on to the street. well that woman according to police overdosed again. she was found slumped over the steps of the kensington and allegheny septa stop less than 45 minutes later and a block away unconscious she was then taken by ambulance to the hospital. >> it's devastating. it's absolutely devastating. it's heartbreaking to see this happen. i'm a father. i can only think about my own children. something like this happened to my own children. it's a terrible issue. >> reporter: well tonight no word on how that woman is doing tonight. we can tell you septa police officers just started using narcan just a couple weeks ago. tonight they believe they saved the life and possibly two. lucy? >> all right. well that is good. chris o'connell hopefully she gets the help she needs and that baby, too. report a triple shooting in chester delaware county with three teenagers shot right in the middle of the afternoon. someone driving a honda arc cord with tinted wip dose shot the teens ology west seventh street. all ended up the crozer chester medical center and one of them did not make it. the other two are stable. we'll have more as it comes in. a big sigh of relief for neighborhoods in one northeast philadelphia community. police say this guy burglarized six homes and he's a suspect in a lot more. to night though he's off the streets. fox 29's dave schratwieser joins us live from philadelphia police headquarters. dave? >> reporter: iain, more than one homeowner confront this burglary suspect inside their own home while he was trying to rob them. tonight we have the story of one man who says as soon as he threatened to go get his gun the suspect took off. i hit the light and turned around there he was standing there. >> terrence mcnally just gotten home from work when he heard a noise inside his medford road home in northeast philly. that's when he came face to face with a knife wielding burglary who had just broken into his house. >> he ran through the door, turned around with 95 and said you don't have a gun. give me your wallet. so i said i'm going to get my gun. so i took a few steps back towards the kitchen that gave him time to run out the door and down the street. >> reporter: mcnally managed to scare the burglar off not before he grabbed his wife's wallet, credit cards and cash. he's one of more than a dozen homeowners in this neighborhood victimized by a burglary suspect since early august. >> i don't know if he's drugged -- for drugs or just for the high of it. i don't know. >> they were all mostly overnight burglaries much the screens removed. they entered house, the person enters the house while people are sleeping in the house. >> reporter: over the weekend police arrested 34-year-old jason hill bert and charged him with six burglaries. he's a suspect in nine more. police say the burglar stolen thousands of dollars in cash, cell phones and computers, and four cars. >> we have arrested him on numerous occasions including five prior burglaries in the same area back in 2011 and 12. >> reporter: investigators say most of the burglaries have occurred in the very same neighborhood where hill bert lives. he was picked up friday after he allegedly broke into three homes in an hour. >> he had proceeds from three other burglaries in his possession. >> he needs to be sent away and learn a lesson. who knows if he can change. >> reporter: now, hill bert warded held on thee hundred thousand dollars bail. he does have multiple arrests. according to court records the longest he's ever spent in jail, just two years. lucy. >> all right, thank you dave. 14 years old. face timing as she was crossing the street ton night prosecutors charged the driver who they say hit her in abington, montgomery county, last month. 32-year-old james clark now faces aggravated assault, reckless endangerment charges. police say he was going 46 in a 25 miles an hour zone. the girl was crossing the street at highland avenue and canterbury road on august 23rd with her focus on her phone. when clark hit her, her family says she's still recovering from severe injuries. new jersey child pornography task force says they got 76,000 files from one man. he owner is in jail right now. trenton attorney general crisper reno a joining john d if any plead guilty to distributions of child porn the state will recommend he serve seven years in prison. his arrest is part of operation statewide child pornography sweep by the new jersey child pornography task force. 39 other men were arrested in the stink for contacts perino says the am of children abused to create the material on de if any's computer are enough to populate a small city. >> west chester police need your help. someone tipped off police a couple weeks about the man saying he was not only exposing himself but touching himself. police say he did it right around midnight on north high street. the last place witnesses spotted him was in kildare's restaurant and bar in the early morning hours of august 31st but west chester police have just released this video hoping you might know who he is and give them a call. a u.s. postal worker from cape may county is facing fraud and theft charges tonight. prosecutors say 59-year-old robert mcgee an stole more than $75,000 in federal workers' comp benefits. he claimed he hurt his wrist in a fall on the job. but investigators realized he was pretty healthy when he posted photos on facebook sip lining and repelling on rock wall. >> we can just getting started to. homes one block away. two massive drug busts. neighbors that no idea. and tonight nearly $2 million of fentanyl is off local streets. two little girls say this suv pulled up and the drive trying tried to convince them to go for ride. good thing they knew better. and her son died a hero an army major. a new jersey state trooper and now the street where she raised him bears his name. ♪ our veterans have given us the rights and freedoms that we have and we enjoy today. ready. aim. fire. and it's important for us to let them know that we will never forget their service. fire. it was steve's idea to have this cemetery. this was supplied to the veterans, giving us a final resting place. we owe everything to steve for what he gave us here. i wanted to make sure that we just didn't say thank you to veterans, we had tangible things to show, and i think we've accomplished that. >> all right, it will be another big day tomorrow. thank you much, ellison. dwayne kell wall a hero serving his country overseas or helping people on his block in willingboro, new jersey. he passed away nine years ago but his neighborhood recently found a way to forever cherish his bravery and heroism. fox 29's shawnette wilson is live in willingboro with more tonight. shawnette. >> reporter: iain, major kelly's mom says when he first told her he wanted to join the army, she said she was afraid that owe would be killed. now every single honor she receives in his memory helps ease that pain just a little bit. and now, she has one almost right outside her front door. >> like something is missing all up through here and everything else. just to talk about it. >> reporter: vera kelly is overcome with grief thinking about her son army major dwayne kelly. killed in iraq june 24t 24th of two to us eight. he was on his second tour deployed for operation iraqi freedom. >> dwayne was a hero. even out in the street he would help nick. >> reporter: vera management manages to squeeze out a smile when she thinks about this day two weeks ago. these pictures capture a ceremony honoring her son with sign renaming the willingboro street he grew up on it now reads major d. kelly way. >> it was a program to from all of the things that he had belonged to. >> major kelly was always 20 year veteran with new jersey state police. they came out in numbers to celebrate his honor. he was a mason an member of capita al pa sigh fraternity and >> very honorable to know that's my son. his wife and daughter came from north jersey to share in the honor with vera. >> oh, very good. heartbreaking. that's my son. made me feel even better when his wife and daughter was there. >> vera proudly wears her son's badge number around her neck given to her by new jersey state police. >> that's the state troopers. they were always good. >> reporter: she also bears of wears a dog tag with her son's picture on it but vera is even happier knowing every time she steps outside her house now she can look up and see her son's name marking the beginning and end of the street and neighborhood where she raised him. >> it was a nice send off from god. >> reporter: and the prince hall grand lodge organized the renaming ceremony. about 300 people attend, lucy. >> thank you shawnette. fire destroyed their dream. the home they bought just a few months ago is gone. now with four children and one on the way, their finding a way to just move forward. sweet 4k tv, mr. peterson. thanks. pretty psyched. did you get fios too? i got to go. peterson. peterson's wife. counting on you guys. your internet deserves the 100% fiber-optic network. and now get our fastest internet ever plus tv and phone for just $79.99 per month. >> local family has to start all over again. fire destroyed their home and all they had inside. the flames actually broke out at their neighbor's home then spread to theirs and they had just moved in. fox 29's bruce gordon has the story of the family's recovery from southwest philadelphia. >> reporter: you could drive by the boarded up row house on the 2,000 block of south 58th street and barely notice the fire damage. >> starting all over again. >> reporter: for fell leisha marshall the charred home represents a dream deferred. >> we put our all into the property, and we was trying to set a foundation for our kids. so i'm just real sad and hurt right now. >> reporter: the smoke detectors still beep five days after the fire that spread from the home next door then gutted the place purchased just few months ago by marshall and her fiance' jameel. >> the windows come out. all the stuff smoke most of the stuff. >> reporter: the couple lived here with their four children. ages five to 12. now little is left but charred ruins. >> my daughter's bike. my other daughter' bike. my son's bike. all of them burned. >> reporter: fell leisha eight months pregnant rush the kids out of the house when her six-year-old son noticed the smoke late wednesday afternoon. >> he's a chronic asthma patient, and he had an asthma attack. they had to put him in the ambulance. and then i went into active labor because i was so scared of what's going on. >> reporter: everyone got out safely including two family do dogs. the couple has insurance in fact the adjuster inspected the place monday but it's unlikely the family had be made whole. fell leisha at 30 is a night student stotted studying to become a tow cher. she had hoped to open a home daycare out of this place after marrying jameel next year. now their plans are on hold. but not fell leisha's faith. >> it's just a bump in the road right now. >> reporter: heck of a bump. >> it is. but you can let something like this stop from you your goals and your dreams. >> reporter: one of her daughters celebrates a ninth birthday on wednesday of this week it will likely not be the happy occasion it might have been before this fire. the family has set up a gofundme page to help them recover from all of this. if you'd like to help g to fox29.com. we will link you to the site. in southwest philadelphia, i'm bruce gordon fox 29 news. your local news is far from over. classes canceled again for thousands of kids teachers hit the picket line with no end to a strike in sight. calling for change. these students say enough is enough. after someone wrote a racial slur on a freshman's door. ♪ students hand in hand coming together in prayer tonight after a student found a racial slur written a across her dorm room at cabrini university. the hateful message launched an investigation by the school. so far there's no word on who would do this but classmates, friends and even strangers rallied around in support. fox 29's joyce evans has more on this developing story. >> we're all just here for an education. >> reporter: and socialization in line with the university's christian culture. >> i never seen that type of like hate going around here. >> reporter: most students agree. never heard of this type of hateful racial slur being found scribbled on an african-american freshman's dormatory door. >> this is not okay, and me backing down says they got what they want. they got me to go away. >> reporter: backing down is not an option for 18-year-old sania van much she's got an army of new classmates, friends and strangers who have rallied around her in support. >> thank god that people are actually like coming together and like helping each other when like people need support. >> reporter: her elder sister met with administrators on campu. >> so we know it's not abina university. we know this is an individual. so at this time, you know, i'm not like frightened but i am still vigilant and aware of the situation. >> we really would like to believe that it's a very small minority of students who might be behave this way. >> reporter: but who? >> i don't know who would do that or how they think they could get away with that. like it's disrespectful. >> it might even be criminal. radnor township police are investigating. >> we are conducting interviews. we've done a walk through of the entire campus to make sure there's nothing else going on related to that. we found nothing. >> i kind of won't be satisfied until i can be told the perch was found and they're no longer on campus. >> reporter: university officials say cabrini' code of conduct allows for punish many ranging from a warning which they say is not likely in this kind of case to expulsion from the university. much worse if charges are filed. in radnor township, joyce evans, fox 29 news. the battle over philadelphia's controversial soda tax continues with bean counters now going at it. the kenney administration wage tax receipts from beverage related industries are up nearly 6%. and the first six months of this year compared to the same period last year. that's a higher jump than all city businesses and the mayor's people says that it shows the soda tax has nothing to do with harming the beverage industry. now, city controller alan butkovitz says not so fast. he says the tax has cost the beverage industry jobs and he insists wage tax receipts cannot fully explain what is happening within the industry. a strike keeping students out of the classroom. methacton school district canceled classes for a second day after the teacher's union decided to go on strike. the two sides have been bargaining sips january but still no agreement. fox 29's hank flynn has his take on the issue. >> shame it got this far,. >> it is absolutely a shame. >> it's hank. i'm in eagleville with the striking teachers of the methacton school district. my take is they didn't want this. no one did. so is it happening? >> money of course specifically teachers sky rocketing health insurance premiums. the methacton district wants teachers to cover those premiums. even if it means less money in teacher's pockets on pay day. >> on 26 pace it's a thousand four dollars. you get a thousand dollars raise and you'll pay increase in thousand 40 in your health care. >> reporter: okay. so you lose out a little bit. >> going the wrong direction. >> right. it's not even neutral. >> reporter: the schoolbuses run any way which is weird because there were no students on board. run by contracted company which has rules to follow regardless of the strike as the teachers walk the picket line they get the occasional visit some from supportive parents like melissa tracy who brought a bunch of pizza. >> we wanted to support our teachers. they spend more time with our kids than we do during the school year we want to show them love back. >> you see kids here and there. but they had no school. why stick around. i ran in 16 year old is a than ma and her mother at the turkey hill gas stations. she's got ap courses she's the drum major she needs to be in school. >> you have to keep up with your work even if you're not in cla class. >> wow. >> it's up to us now to keep going even if we're not in school. little more pressure. a little more difficult but we're trying our best. >> reporter: about that health insurance being the sticking point. professor paul clark told me on the phone that it's far from uncommon. and it can be tough to solve in talks. >> in this case the teachers have taken a stand, um, they said they're willing to absorb some of the health care costs but what the school district is offering in pay, um, means ultimately their standard of level, their compensation package will decline. >> reporter: the school board says they'll continue to negotiate in good faith and agree with the teachers, yes, the hell care plan and who pays for is the sticking point. maybe the teachers and the district ought to get together and negotiate with the health insurance provider. hmm. that's where the money is ending up. i'm hank and that's my take. ♪ new jersey governor chris christie is a announce add new move to battle the opioid crisis. he says the state will spend to hundred million dollars on initiatives to improve substance abuse treatment and prevention. the money will target programs for under served populations such as the uninsured, medicaid recipients and babies born with addiction. unreal. one bus slammed into another in new york city. camera caught it as it happened. the question still tonight, what happened? hurt after two buses collided early this morning in queens. police say charter bus barreled through an intersection slammed into a city bus then plowed into building. the driver of the charter bus 49-year-old raymond mong died. the it had fired him in 2015 before he began work fog the charter company. no one was on the bus when he crash a woman on the scene says her uncle was driving the city bus. >> very upset. my heart and my prayers go out to the family especially the one with the fatality as well as the injuries. i take the bus every day. via 13-year-old as well, and the problem here is downtown flushing is too congested. >> 55-year-old man riding on the city bus and a 68-year-old man walking on the sidewalk also died. authorities are investigating what exactly happened. anger and destruction runs rampant in st. louis days after police officer was acquitted of a 2011 murder of a blackmail. police arrested 120 people since the verdict came down friday morning. for the most part, the three days of protests have been peaceful. more than a thousand people gathered outside police headquarters last night and marched through downtown st. louis. but other demonstrators have thrown
