all-star break.ú we start the 11:00 news in storm center 4, the weekend bringing us the beginning of a heatwave. it's going to feel like more than 100 degrees. >> so how quickly are we going to feel that when we step out the door tomorrow morning doug? >> i tell you guys, today high temperatures only in the low to mid-80s. tomorrow, however, a much different story as the heat really gets turned up quickly. take a look, as you're making your way out and about the heat comes quick. 76 degrees at 7:00 a.m. up to 85 by 11:00. up to 94 degrees by 3:00. and it's not just hot, it will be extremely humid during the day tomorrow too. and not just tomorrow, the heatwave, well, it's here for a while. look at the feels-like temperatures. these will be the heat index temperatures. 101 on saturday. sunday, 105. some areas could be close to 110 on sunday with that heat index. 103 on monday and down to 101 on tuesday. once again, probably the warmest temperatures we have seen this year. i'll update you on when they move in how they stick around and what comes next in the forecast. that's next. this incredible scene has been unfolding for hours now. firefighters are doing everything they can to contain a wildfire that is burning in southern california. even the crowded highways aren't safe from these flames. >> dozens of people were trapped on the highway as the fire jumped the road, burning cars and trucks in its path. news4's chris lawrence has been watching this thing all evening. he joins us now from the live desk. chris? >> yeah doreen. in one minute these people were driving past this brushfire. the next, an inferno was right on top of them. how tear a tieing it was as black smoke and fire swallowed up a good part of the highway and forced all these people to abandon their cars. the 15 freeway is the main road to las vegas. and there had to be at least 70 cars trucks tractor-trailers on the road when that wildfire jumped the line. firefighters were urging people to stay in their vehicles so they wouldn't be hurt because the helicopters are dropping huge amounts of fire retardant. but we saw a lot of people get out of burning cars cover their faces and start walking away from the flames. traffic was paralyzed in both directions, and even veteran officers say they have never seen anything like this. so far, this fire has burned well over 3500 acres and destroyed at least five homes some of which burned in the last hour or two. right now it's threatening about 50 buildings in a rural community just outside los angeles. now this fire destroyed about 20 cars, trucks and trailers. you can take a look at a live look there from a helicopter, showing you what it looks like right now. two drivers did have to be treated at the scene, but there amazingly have been no serious injuries. doreen? >> chris lawrence, thank you. more breaking news right now. shomari stone just got to the scene of a triple shooting in northeast d.c. he is live on edgwood street, just north of rhode island avenue. shomari, what are you learning? >> well, jim, i'm here on the 600 block of edgewood street. you ask what am i learning? sources within the metropolitan police department tell me that one of the three men three victims has died and that at least one of them is also -- they're also saying that they were possibly arguing over a dice game which led up to this shooting. let me move out the way you can see crime scene investigators are here. it's an active scene. police have shut down the street. let's roll some video right now. and sources say they were possibly arguing over a dice game, which led up to the shooting. this happened behind an apartment building. and when we first arrived on the scene, detectives had their flashlights searching for shell casings. at least two dozen shots were fired. they moved us back further away and extended the crime scene because that gives them more of geographic location to search for more shell casings within this criminal case. and police begin, we don't know if they are searching for a shooter right now. again they believe that the motive is a possible dice game. if you have any information, call area, the bodies of four marines are being returned to their families tonight. the marines were killed in a domestic terrorist attack in chattanooga yesterday. the escort brought the service members to manassas airport where they were then flown by helicopter to dover air force base for a dignified transfer. the marines served a combined five tours in iraq and afghanistan. one was awarded the purple heart. new at 11:00, the first look at the chattanooga city police officer who was injured in that shooting. dennis pettigo is a veteran of the force. he was shot in the ankle and pulled to safety by fellow officers. his family released a statement tonight saying he is in good spirits and thanking the community for their thoughts and prayers. thousands gather tonight in chattanooga to find comfort and begin healing. members of the christian jewish, and islamic communities joined together tonight for an a interfaith vigil to remember those killed and wounded. governor bill haslem said he prays that chattanooga would be a city that answers hate with love. and it's clear the hurt is still very raw. >> my heart is breaking. i'm a chattanoogan. these were men that served their country. and that we loved them because they give it all. they give everything they had yesterday to protect us. >> navy petty officer randall smith also still in the hospital tonight. he was shot multiple times and critically wounded. new video tonight shows the man police want to talk to about a shoot-out in the middle of a d.c. playground full of kids. this is on the morning of july 7th. police say a man ran to the playground at the columbia heights community center and started shooting at other men in a nearby alley. so far police are only calling the man in this video a person of interest. three strikes and you're out. major problems tonight at nats part. the nationals-dodgers game was just suspended minutes ago after a bank of lights went out for the third time. this came after two separate delays, one of them nearly an hour and a half long. dave johnson here with more on a frustrating night for players and fans. >> the third time was not the charm. frustration, because fans a sellout crowd expected the electricity on the field. after all, this was the nationals against the dodgers. to raise the curtain on the second half of the season and offer a possible happen, you know, it's not acceptable. nats had taken a lead after the lights came back on. more in sports on a wild night. a massive pile of dirt is now blamed for the collapse of a parking garage at the watergate hotel. the d.c. department of consumer and regulatory affairs says the weight of the dirt on top of the garage exceeded what it was designed to support. a construction company and landscaping company have been cited for piling up the dirt. two people were hurt. several cars were crushed when the garage collapsed in may. there is new leadership tonight at d.c.'s troubled dna lab where work has been suspended since april, the daymare muriel bowser announced dr. jennifer smith will take over as director. work stopped after two scathing reports found problems with the lab's research and analysis. dr. smith has been working as a consultant to help fix those issues. auditors will return to the lab in november to reassess. the district hopes to lift the suspension by the beginning of next year. new at 11:00 tonight crowds in new york city gather to remember eric garner, and to protest his death. garner died a year ago today when a police officer used a chokehold to arrest him. protesters marked the day with several demonstrations. police arrested at least one person outside central park. earlier this week the city settled a civil lawsuit with garner's family for nearly $6 million. the family says the settlement was not a victory, and the bill pushed for federal civil rights charges. a frightening experience for one woman who nearly drowned potomac river. sharing her story as police begin a new push to keep people safe at great falls. she is the most talked about presidential candidate of the past few weeks. and there is a huge sign with his name on it in the heart of d.c. tonight why that sign is not going anywhere. and a drone delivery faa approved. it's a first iran keeps their nuclear facilities. can go uninspected. restrictions end after 10 at the infamous supermax federal prison in colorado. dzhokhar tsarnaev will spend 23 hours a day in isolation. he'll live in a cell that is 7 feet by 12 feet. in that space he'll have a bed, a sink, a shower and a toilet. tsarnaev will eventually be moved to death row at a federal prison in indiana. that massive trump sign outside the billionaire's hotel project here in d.c. isn't going anywhere, folks. d.c. councilmember charles allen questioned whether the sign violated district regulations because trump is a presidential candidate. according to the department of consumer and regulatory affairs, the sign is legal. the agency says the redevelopment of the old post office building is a federal project and exempt from permit requirements. for the first time ever, drones made a delivery, and it happened in virginia. the drones delivered medication to a clinic in the small town of wise in the southwestern part of the state. that delivery was part of a government-approved test. it traveled about a mile from a local regional airport. governor terry mcauliffe called it a kitty hawk moment. >> revolutionized in the way we deliver health care. we can now get to remote areas. we can state. is a man from prince georges county is wanted for some crooked contracting work in southern new jersey. police say this is earl nicholson. he was caught on these surveillance photos. nicholson is accused of taking $2500 in cash from a homeowner, ripping up his house and then refusing to continue the work unless he got more money. police tell us nicholson ran off when the homeowner said he was calling police. he is accused of similar crimes in our area. a first 4 traffic alert now about a major road closure that is going to affect a lot of you in the coming weeks. starting tomorrow randolph road will be shut down right near the railroad tracks in rockville. csx will be performing track maintenance at the crossing. randolph road will be closed between neville streak and park lawn drive. the track work is expected to be done next friday. a hot weekend ahead. sounds like the perfect time to get in the water. tonight u.s. park police want to get the word out that this is not the place to cool off. the potomac river near great falls it's dangerous, even for very experienced swimmers. tonight only, our jackie bensen talks to one young athlete who narrowly escaped drowning. >> reporter: nothing can tell you more about the hidden dangers of this river than the young woman we talked to tonight. when we see images like these, rescues from the potomac river, many assume the person couldn't swim or fell in near the rapids. it's often a mistaken assumption. >> it's the k think will never happen to you but it does. >> reporter: a college rower and a strong swimmer. on memorial day weekend last year, she was splashing around with friends in a placid looking stretch of the potomac south of great falls when something she did not think could happen did happen. >> i got carried out by the current. ended up in rapids. realized i went over the -- went over the mini dam. i'm so thankful that the kid who jumped in to get me, we didn't know each other. he was complete strangers. he jumped in to get me. we're still friends now. >> reporter: a police helicopter helped rescue the two exhausted swimmers. >> do you see him over there? >> reporter: u.s. park police officers patrol this park with the mission of stopping a rescue before it becomes necessary. they know the vast majority of drowning victims here are between 18 and 25 and think it won't happen to them. >> they'll get out of the water when they see us. but unfortunately it will give them warnings. and at times they'll go right back in when we leave. >> reporter: they patrol in an atv. and if you're wearing a swimsuit, they will probably talk to you. >> you guys didn't come here to swim did you? >> no. >> reporter: park police lieutenant jerry marshall says his officers are making more warning contacts than ever, but park visitors, especially young people are still getting in the river. >> in 2014, there were 130 search-and-rescue missions and saves. eight of those were by hoist rescues. that's taking a basket down getting folks in the basket and bringing them up. this year alone we've had 33 already. >> reporter: now these signs aren't here because the park service doesn't still seeing that 80 degrees. winds right now out of the south at 9 miles per hour. take a look at the impact forecast for tomorrow. again, tomorrow, the impact well, it's going to be moderate to high. hot and humid. heat index close to 100. a few afternoon thunderstorms. any storms that develop tomorrow could be on the strong side. so that's something else that just to consider as you make your way out and about during the afternoon tomorrow. nothing around our region right now. but look what is going on back to our west. we are watching showers and storms around cincinnati, parts of kentucky, and chicago. we may see some move into our area early tomorrow morning. here is future weather. around 9:00 a.m. notice shower activity around 8:00, 9:00 10:00 in the morning. we may actually start off with some showers. and then watch what happens. around noon, no problems here. we start to see a few showers back to the west. but most of the afternoon early afternoon is dry. but then we start to see some storms develop around 3:00, back towards the mountains. and make their way in and around the i-95 corridor. once again some of the storms, any storms that develop could be on the strong side. what is going to be the biggest threat as they move out around 8:00, 9:00? the biggest threat tomorrow is going to be the chance for some high winds and maybe some heavy rain. hail possibly. but we're not expecting anything too big. i'm not expecting a severe weather day. tomorrow is not a weather alert day because of storms. i just don't think there is going to be all that many of them. however, weather alert day coming for the next couple of days. tomorrow hot and humid. if you're going to the pool you're going to need to cool off from the hot and humid weather. but if you hear thunder, make sure you get out of the pool right away. any time there is lightning or thunder, most likely it will close the pool downey way. but make sure if you're at your own house, you watch out for that. tracking the heat here is the heat. high pressure down to the south. the heat has been back to the west over the last few days. over the next couple of days, the hot weather the dome of really hot air comes right over our region all the way up towards the philadelphia and new york areas. as it makes its way in here, today was on the pleasant side. tomorrow morning it will start off sticky. but by tomorrow afternoon, we're talking about oppressive heat indices. and that heat index over 100 degrees tomorrow. that's why we have on sunday and monday, we're calling them a weather alert days. chuck bell will be in tomorrow morning and amelia segal. talk much more about the heat. sunday and monday 97 on sunday. 95 degrees on monday. i think sunday will be the hottest. the heat beginning of next year. new at 11:00 tonight crowds in new york city gather to remember eric garner, and to protest his death. garner died a year ago today when a police officer used a chokehold to arrest him. protesters marked the day with several demonstrations. police arrested at least one person outside central park. earlier this week the city settled a civil lawsuit with garner's family for nearly $6 million. the family says the settlement was not a victory, and the bill pushed for federal civil rights charges. a frightening experience for one woman who nearly drowned potomac river. sharing her story as police begin a new push to keep people safe at great falls. she is the most talked about presidential candidate of the past few weeks. and there is a huge sign with his name on it in the heart of d.c. tonight why that sign is not going anywhere. and a drone delivery faa approved. it's a first iran keeps their nuclear facilities. can go uninspected. restrictions end after 10 years. then iran could build a nuclear weapon in two months. iran has violated 20 international agreements and is the leading state sponsor of terrorism. . new at 11, the boston marathon bomber is now at the infamous supermax federal prison in colorado. dzhokhar tsarnaev will spend 23 hours a day in isolation. he'll live in a cell that is 7 feet by 12 feet. in that space he'll have a bed, a sink, a shower and a toilet. tsarnaev will eventually be moved to death row at a federal prison in indiana. that massive trump sign outside the billionaire's hotel project here in d.c. isn't going anywhere, folks. d.c. councilmember charles allen questioned whether the sign violated district regulations because trump is a presidential candidate. according to the department of consumer and regulatory affairs, the sign is legal. the agency says the redevelopment of the old post office building is a federal project and exempt from permit requirements. for the first time ever, drones made a delivery, and it happened in virginia. the drones delivered medication to a clinic in the small town of wise in the southwestern part of the state. that delivery was part of a government-approved test. it traveled about a mile from a local regional airport. governor terry mcauliffe called it a kitty hawk moment. >> revolutionized in the way we deliver health care. we can now get to remote areas. we can get to areas during horrible weather, these drones can fly. this is the first in the nation to do this. >> proponents hope tests like this will lead to new high-tech jobs in the southern part of the state. is a man from prince georges county is wanted for some crooked contracting work in southern new jersey. police say this is earl nicholson. he was caught on these surveillance photos. nicholson is accused of taking $2500 in cash from a homeowner, ripping up his house and then refusing to continue the work unless he got more money. police tell us nicholson ran off when the homeowner said he was calling police. he is accused of similar crimes in our area. a first 4 traffic alert now about a major road closure that is going to affect a lot of you in the coming weeks. starting tomorrow randolph road will be shut down right near the railroad tracks in rockville. csx will be performing track maintenance at the crossing. randolph road will be closed between neville streak and park lawn drive. the track work is expected to be done next friday. a hot weekend ahead. sounds like the perfect time to get in the water. tonight u.s. park police want to get the word out that this is not the place to cool off. the potomac river near great falls it's dangerous, even for very experienced swimmers. tonight only, our jackie bensen talks to one young athlete who narrowly escaped drowning. >> reporter: nothing can tell you more about the hidden dangers of this river than the young woman we talked to tonight. when we see images like these, rescues from the potomac river, many assume the person couldn't swim or fell in near the rapids. it's often a mistaken assumption. >> it's the k think will never happen to you but it does. >> reporter: a college rower and a strong swimmer. on memorial day weekend last year, she was splashing around with friends in a placid looking stretch of the potomac south of great falls when something she did not think could happen did happen. >> i got carried out by the current. ended up in rapids. realized i went over the -- went over the mini dam. i'm so thankful that the kid who jumped in to get me, we didn't know each other. he was complete strangers. he jumped in to get me. we're still friends now. >> reporter: a police helicopter helped rescue the two exhausted swimmers. >> do you see him over there? >> reporter: u.s. park police officers patrol this park with the mission of stopping a rescue before it becomes necessary. they know the vast majority of drowning victims here are between 18 and 25 and think it won't happen to them. >> they'll get out of the water when they see us. but unfortunately it will give them warnings. and at times they'll go right back in when we leave. >> reporter: they patrol in an atv. and if you're wearing a swimsuit, they will probably talk to you. >> you guys didn't come here to swim did you? >> no. >> reporter: park police lieutenant jerry marshall says his officers are making more warning contacts than ever, but park visitors, especially young people are still getting in the river. >> in 2014, there were 130 search-and-rescue missions and saves. eight of those were by hoist rescues. that's taking a basket down getting folks in the basket and bringing them up. this year alone we've had 33 already. >> reporter: now these signs aren't here because the park service doesn't want people to have fun. they're here because they want people to leave alive. jackie bensen, news4. >> boy, don't take a risk. we have so many public pools and other places to cool down around here. don't do it. it's dangerous. so it's going to be fierce. >> it really is over the next few days. we've had a couple of heatwaves so far. but i think this one will be the hottest that we've seen. especially on sunday into monday. even tomorrow it's going to be on the hot side. after today a beautiful afternoon. we saw high temperature only in the low 80s in most locations. and right now, we're still seeing that 80 degrees. winds right now out of the south at 9 miles per hour. take a look at the impact forecast for tomorrow. again, tomorrow, the impact well, it's going to be moderate to high. hot and humid. heat index close to 100. a few afternoon thunderstorms. any storms that develop tomorrow could be on the strong side. so that's something else that just to consider as you make your way out and about during the afternoon tomorrow. nothing around our region right now. but look what is going on back to our west. we are watching showers and storms around cincinnati, parts of kentucky, and chicago. we may see some move into our area early tomorrow morning. here is future weather. around 9:00 a.m. notice shower activity around 8:00, 9:00 10:00 in the morning. we may actually start off with some showers. and then watch what happens. around noon, no problems here. we start to see a few showers back to the west. but most of the afternoon early afternoon is dry. but then we start to see some storms develop around 3:00, back towards the mountains. and make their way in and around the i-95 corridor. once again some of the storms, any storms that develop could be on the strong side. what is going to be the biggest threat as they move out around 8:00, 9:00? the biggest threat tomorrow is going to be the chance for some high winds and maybe some heavy rain. hail possibly. but we're not expecting anything too big. i'm not expecting a severe weather day. tomorrow is not a weather alert day because of storms. i just don't think there is going to be all that many of them. however, weather alert day coming for the next couple of days. tomorrow hot and humid. if you're going to the pool you're going to need to cool off from the hot and humid weather. but if you hear thunder, make sure you get out of the pool right away. any time there is lightning or thunder, most likely it will close the pool downey way. but make sure if you're at your own house, you watch out for that. tracking the heat here is the heat. high pressure down to the south. the heat has been back to the west over the last few days. over the next couple of days, the hot weather the dome of really hot air comes right over our region all the way up towards the philadelphia and new york areas. as it makes its way in here, today was on the pleasant side. tomorrow morning it will start off sticky. but by tomorrow afternoon, we're talking about oppressive heat indices. and that heat index over 100 degrees tomorrow. that's why we have on sunday and monday, we're calling them a weather alert days. chuck bell will be in tomorrow morning and amelia segal. talk much more about the heat. sunday and monday 97 on sunday. 95 degrees on monday. i think sunday will be the hottest. the heat index could be 105 to potentially up to 110 in some locations. same deal on monday with a high temperature of 95 degrees. and right now tuesday is a question mark. if we have a cold front move far enough south we may only be in the upper 80s. but still, right now i've got us at 90 degrees with a good chance of storms on tuesday. wednesday, thursday and friday we also are at or above 90 degrees. because you see in the bottom of the fourth, in this game, a bank of lights on the third baseline go out at 8:19, if you're scoring at home. an hour and 22-minute delay. more trouble. the lights went out at 9:50. a 40-minute delay. the fans are doing their part, trying help. play resumes at 10:30. the bottom of the fifth, escobar on the second pitch of the fifth inning. now we have baseball. now we have lights. it's going it's gone. the nats with a 3-2 lead. but you know in baseball, what is it? three strikes, you're out. 10:42 the lights went out again. that's enough. game suspended with the nats leading 3-2. the game will be resumed at 2:05 tomorrow with the dodgers batting in the top of the sixth. the final time and easy decision. >> unforeseen circumstances. you know, you never know with baseball. so after the second one, we knew that we weren't going to do it again. so the fact that it happened three times, we just -- we don't know exactly why. so they're troubleshooting it now.
