mother and her older brother. sturgeon in the area can weigh up to 200 pounds. it's going to be a very important week in the national conversation about the confederate flag. south carolina lawmakers will debate whether to remove it from the grounds of their state house. the church massacre in charleston removed the momentum to downtown the civil war flag. as brian mooar reports, the repercussions are being felt far beyond the south including at nascar today. >> reporter: this year at daytona international speedway, displace of rivalries and loyalties weren't just focus olden the drivers. some fans flew confederate flags in defiance of nascar's requests to leave the banners the home. on this independence day weekend there were rallies for and against the confederate flag. each side seeing very different meaning in this potent symbol. the debate over the flag has been raging for years, the charleston church massacre has provided a moment for southerners to revisit the flag's history and its meaning in the 21st century. against that backdrop, south carolina legislators begin debate monday on whether to remove the confederate battle flag that flies on the state house grounds. >> i don't think this is going to be easy. i don't think that it's going to be painless. but i do think that it will be respectful and that it will move swiftly. >> reporter: no matter what the decision, some are ready to defend this flag as part of their heritage. >> the people do not like it they ought to move. >> reporter: a reminder of a nation once at war with itself, proving to be as people lar rising as ever. brian mooar, nbc news. it was a wet fourth of july, but finally, there were some room for fireworks. >> yes. >> but this week, gosh the drive to work tomorrow the drive home could be problematic. >> yes. we are going to have rain showers tomorrow morning and tomorrow afternoon, as you said, yesterday, got about an inch of rain. >> wow. >> in d.c. and it came pretty strong and pretty quick. but thank goodness we got everything in there and all the fireworks went off without a hitch, thank goodness out there. hopefully everybody was safe and enjoyed your fourth of july. now we have to deal with this first full week of july moving into, you know, the rest of this workweek. we are going to look at some heat and also going to look at some rain chance. i mean, it's a typical july kind of forecast here. and so we are going to be dodging a few showers out there tonight it really looks like. you know they are going to be here and there mainly during the overnight, but to the west, happening right now, just a few out there and some more showers and storms tomorrow afternoon, as erika was saying. the showers for the morning commute and showers and thunderstorms for the evening commute. as i would say, we are definitely heating up this week. in fact, temperatures are going to go up into the mid to upper 90s. not there right now. 83 in d.c. 81, manassas. 81, leesburg, 79 martinsburg, it's warm, it's muggy out there temperatures going to drop, not too far, too fast, but going to fall into the 70s as we get into really the overnight. and then we will warm back into the mid-80s tomorrow. but you can see a few showers out there right now, really not affecting the d.c. area may have a few sprinkles here and there, mainly, they are to the west, as a piece of energy is kind of floating over the tennessee valley. that's eventually going to rise to the north and west over western p.a. as we go through to and even through tomorrow. so that's what we are looking at. that's really why i think mainly tonight, those showers and thunderstorms are going to be west until the overnight. then it's all going to start to spread east. so, that's what you can expect. i'm not expecting any severe weather during the overnight. you can have a few thundershowers out there that might wake you up, nothing like we might have last week, still could have a few, especially areas, rain showers south of richmond, some heavy rain showers down there the thing is they are not moving. headed out to nats park, game at 8:00, against the giants you want to go ahead and maybe bring that rain gear. i really don't think you're going to need it but better to be prepared, obviously. clouds feeling it and showers possible as you get into the later inning. time it on out for, start at 7:00 pop-up sprinkles some spots again, south of richmond, we are seeing heavier showers, but as we go through the overnight, it starts to fill in, especially the blue ridge. we get into monday morning. again, i don't think it's all going to be a wet commute out there. but we are going to have a few spotty showers out there, we will continue into your monday afternoon. some of these showers tomorrow afternoon through tomorrow evening could be strong to severe and definitely heavy downpours, a lot of moisture thought that we are working with, but then we get into tuesday, keeping a slight chance of a shower on tuesday, most of us are going to remain dry, get sunshine back it is going to be humid and hot we get into tuesday. highs tomorrow into the 80s, a warm day out there, muggy as well with showers and thunderstorms as we get into the afternoon. so, just be aware of that we get into the afternoon again. some strong to severe and definitely on the humid side. scattered showers and storms i would say anywhere from 1:00 to 8:00, a good chance tomorrow a slight chance on tuesday and then afternoon chances as we get to wednesday, thursday friday. unfortunately, even into the weekend. erika? >> thanks, lauren. appreciate it. the smithsonian folklife festival wrapped up this afternoon with a big celebration. this year's festival focused on dancers, musicians and cooks shows off how peruvians are preserving their tradition. one of the biggest highlights was the building of a suspension bridge, it was bovine out of grass, if you can believe that and can hold the weight of at least ten people. well, the pain was just all over his hey, you do that time you had that oblique injury, said none of us? >> i was going to say had an oblique. if it's a muscle, i don't have it stephen strasburg has it. bad news for the nationals pitching staff, when stephen strasburg was starting to look like himself again here comes another setback for the 26-year-old. yesterday strasberg left the nats/giants game in the fourth inning. today, the team announced he has been placed in on the 15-day disabled list an on blowing what strain. spent four weeks on the dl due to neck tightens. against the giants yesterday he was looking good until this happened. watch him kind of reach for a side right there even left the ballgame. this season, strasberg has a 5.16 e.r.a. but since coming off the disabled list the first time, he has posted a record of 2.0 with a 1.50 e.r.a. and 15 strikeouts. the nationals, they have called up right-hander taylor jordan from aaa syracuse to take over his roster spot. >> something we have got to do for his health and well being and make sure that we get him well as quickly as possible. yeah, it's unfortunate, because he felt good and was pitching great and it is what it is and he is disappointed about it. and so are we, but we have -- it's part of the game. we have to get him back healthy and going as quickly as we can, making sure that's 100% fully ready to go when he does come back. >> nats and giants at 78:00. orioles visiting the white sox. jonathan scope on the disabled list since april. welcome back. top of the second, he just crushes this ball to left. the birds, they are up 2-0. later on in the sixth inning orioles up 2-0, two on for caleb joseph, going opposite field, ball doesn't quite leave the park here good enough to play the two runs. birds up 4-0 at this point. eighth inning chris davis, get to crush now. he was robbed of a home run yesterday. looking for revenge today, a man on. crush, going to take this ball to left. jamie shuck, watch this grab. >> wow that's impressive. >> shuck robs chris davis again. this guy chris davis can't win, beside being a major league baseball player, orioles, final score, 9-1. the o's and nationals, they will meet up later this week for a three-game series. that series will take place, or start on friday at camden yards. moving on to women's world cup, tonight's match against japan is all about or more than just redemption for the americans. abby wambach, the face of women's soccer in the u.s., has yet to win a world cup final. at the age of 35, this will be her last chance to do so. back in 2011, these two teams met in the world cup final and wham back had what we all believe at the time was the game winner. have to give japan a lot of credit, they came back to steal that match and the cup from the americans. they won on penalty kicks. now the u.s., they did beat japan the following year in the olympics but that world cup loss still stings. these players and coaches though, they realize that tonight has nothing to do with the past. >> i wasn't around in 2011 as part of the staff but i mean i've said this a lot, i don't have a rear view mirror in my life. i always look forward and so it's not about what's happened before for me it's the opportunity to have this amazing group of women that potentially win a world championship. >> we have prepared our whole life to play in a world cup final. so we are extremely excited and i think what's so special about this team is that we have trusted each other, we have trusted our coaching staff the whole time. so i trust in our preparation going into this game and we are excited to play. >> all right the united states and japan will get under way at 7:00 tonight. moving on to nascar for a moment, the coke zero 400 at daytona international speedway did not take place yesterday, like so many racing fans are used to seeing. instead that race will be featured tonight. doesn't matter if it's july 4th or july 5th racing at daytona is something these drivers always look forward to. >> it's a special track, no matter what race it s it could be a kids' race on bikes, want to win. says daytona on the trophy. >> fourth of july weekend is always so much fun, i think everybody is relaxed and enjoying the freedoms we have in this country and we have a chance to kind of go out and be a source of entertainment and then also use that as an opportunity to say thank you as well. >> getting to the end of this thing and it's time to go you can see a lot more bumper banging, a lot more cars getting sideways, i'm sure one heck of a fireworks show, whether during the race or after the race. >> you can watch that race on nbc. also tonight, you do not want to miss capitals head coach barry trotz. he sat down with carol maloney and those two had a ton to talk about, coming up tonight on sports final. busy offseason for the capitals, free agency all the trades taking place. can't wait to hear what coach has to bay is t sports final at 11:30. >> thanks jason. here's proof of the aagainny of second place, guy running a race in atlanta thought he had it in the bag, started celebrating a little too soon. if you could see the reaction on his face as he, oh look, oh oh, oh so close. don't you just hate it when that on this sunday night, a terrifying moment as a deck collapses beneath a family taking a holiday photo, injuring two dozen and raising new concerns about the safety of millions of decks around the country. close call. a small plane runs into trouble, and makes a crash landing on a crowded beach. what happened next was just as surprising. on the brink. the vote in greece on whether to accept a bailout worth billions. what it means for europe and beyond. the rematch. an epic showdown tonight as the u.s. and japan battle it out again in the world cup final. and the little princess charmed again. this time the big brother george by her side. "nightly news" begins now.
