fourth of july activities. but as they say, the show must go on. and it did. culminating with this fireworks display at the national mall. darcy spencer joins us now live with all the fun. >> reporter: it was pretty dicey earlier today with the big storms that rolled through. all of that is over as you said. the fireworks went off tonight. it was just a great night to be here on the national mall. it's what everyone was waiting for. >> they were wonderful. they were so awesome. . i loved the part when it said usa. it was so cool. >> reporter: what everyone got drenched for. the spectacular fireworks on the national mall. >> we're all excited. this is an experience that we've never had before. >> reporter: the display attracted tens of thousands of people. among them kyrie who has another reason to celebrate. >> it's my birthday. i'm 5. >> reporter: happy birthday! the crowds are lighter this year. but for so many, it's a tradition they wouldn't miss. for others, it's a first-time experience. >> it's my first fireworks in washington, d.c. >> reporter: how special is that for you? >> it's awesome. >> reporter: an afternoon thunderstorm chased thousands inside. the park police activated its safe haven plan opening museums were people to take shelter. where are you heading to now? >> shelter. >> reporter: some had umbrellas. others wore ponchos. many simply caught off guard with no back-up plan. but by nightfall, the skies had cleared, the fireworks, a crowd-pleaser, worth getting wet for. >> we were caught in the storm. but we don't care about that. we're so excited about the fireworks. this is the best part of our vacation. >> reporter: she certainly was excited. everything is over here on the mall, the festivities are over. people are still out people up on their feet dancing. a sea of red, white and blue filled the grounds of the west lawn of the capitol. barry manilow sang a mehdi of patriotic songs. at rfk, concertgoers briefly cleared the field after the rain came through this afternoon. but the show went on. the foo fighters took the stage just a short while ago. we sent you a breaking news alert about this next story. eight people had to be rushed to the hospital after a boat exploded this evening on solomons island. investigators say the 38-foot cabin cruiser was fueling at the dock when something ignited the boat. the fire hurt three children and seven adults. good news they are all expected to be okay. some of you are feeling temperatures in the 60s right now, pretty nice out there, right? meteorologist amelia segal joins us with what you can expect. >> the national weather service issued a dense fog advisory for some counties in northern virginia including prince william down around stafford and king george counties. all the areas in gray. dense fog in spots overnight tonight until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. still patchy fog elsewhere. we'll see any patchy fog burn off by about 9:00, 10:00 a.m. it is going to be a comfortably cool start for your sunday morning. 7:00 a.m., temperatures around 70. but 60s in the suburbs. by 11:00 a.m., near 80 degrees. right now, the search is under way for someone who stabbed a man to death at the noma-gallaudet metro station. trained had to bypass the station for five hours as police investigated the scene. no arrests have been made. now to a murder mystery where police found a man dead in the woods. joseph gibson is from churchton. officers found his body along a wooded path in the town of lothian. detectives say there are obvious signs of trauma on his body. right now, they have no suspects in custody. a fight ends in gunshots and tonight a man is fighting for his life. this happened at a house on rhonda place in leesburg. when officers got there last night, they found a man shot multiple times in the chest. he's out of surgery but still listed in criminal condition. here's a look at the man police say is responsible for this. jacob kinsey is charged with felony use of a firearm and malicious wounding. new tonight, a huge rescue effort in silver spring after a car went off the road landing 50 feet down an embankment. montgomery county fire rescue tweeted out these pictures. about a dozen rescue crews used rigging equipment and ropes to lower a basket and get the driver out of there. this happened near southwood avenue. good news, the driver is expected to be okay. the pilot got a clear message today. he's lucky he escaped unhurt after his plane crashed onto a beach. many of you enjoyed the countless parades tty/v this plane crash could have been a lot worse. the pilot of this banner plane lost an engine, flipped over and crashed into a crowded beach in southern california this afternoon. the pilot walked away, incredibly nobody got hurt on the ground. there is progress tonight in the iran nuclear negotiations. but there's still a lot to do. technical experts helping with the negotiations in vienna have come up with a tentative draft agreement. it outlines how and when to lift u.s. and european sanctions against iran. but the deal must be approved by senior officials from the seven nations ahead of tuesday's deadline. and there's still no plan on how the separate united nations sanctions would be applied if iran violates any of the vinyl agreement. at historic mt. vernon today, about 100 people celebrated the fourth of july by becoming american citizens. they came from 45 countries, some as far away as thailand and tunisia. they took the oath of allegiance this morning. this is just one of 50 naturalization ceremonies happening across the country this holiday weekend. a total of 4,000 people will become citizens this year. after today's heavy rain, will the skies clear up for of the presidential campaign. the family of a young woman gunned down on a san francisco pier says no matter what kind of political spin you put on it, they're never going to get their daughter back. katherine steinle died on wednesday. the shooter is an undocumented immigrant who's been deported from the u.s. five times. immigration turned him over to authorities in march and ask that he remain in custody but it wasn't honored. steinle's parents say that's unacceptable but they can't do anything about it now. >> we're not dwelling on that. justice will reign hopefully with that. but it's not going to bring kate back. >> on friday donald trump said the shooting was further proof the u.s. needs to crack down on border patrol. today republican rival jeb bush said that he was personally offended by trump's recent remark not just about the murder but how he criticized immigrants and those who come to the u.s. illegally. he said trump's views are way out of the mainstream of what republicans think. bush's wife was born in mexico. many of you spent this afternoon watching or walking in fourth of july parades. and what better place to see one than right here in our nation's capital. hundreds of people lined constitution avenue to washington the national independence day parade. the festivities featured bands drum corps and floats from all over the country. one woman we talked to said seeing all this just made her so proud to be an american. >> i want to thank this country for welcoming me and giving me an opportunity. i came with my mexican hot. i love this country. god bless america. >> indeed. people at the parade noticed a heavy police presence along the routes as well. there were celebrations across the region today. d.c. mayor muriel bowser marched in the annual neighborhood in the northwest. after the parade, people got a free picnic. and over in tacoma park, people celebrated one of the oldest independence day parties along the atlantic coast. celebrations like this have been going on for 126 years. weather forced the cancellation of tonight's fireworks. but you'll be able to enjoy them tomorrow. what an up-and-down day for the weather. but at last we got our fireworks this evening. >> the skies cleared, the rain moved out. it felt like summer during the fireworks. it was a little humid. temperatures were generally in the 70s. now areas of fog developing across the region and you'll be dealing with that in spots tomorrow. but overall, the weather will have a low impact on your sunday. a nice finish to our holiday weekend. any fogginess burns off by about 9:00, 10:00 a.m. and mainly dry. just about everybody will be dry tomorrow. but a fog advisory has been issued by the national weather service for the counties here in gray, including prince william running until 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. dense fog in these locations but still patchy fog elsewhere. visibilities tomorrow morning could be less than a quarter of a mile in spots. here's the latest check of current visibilities. all the major reporting sights have no major issues just yet. satellite/radar showing partly to mostly cloudy skies over the area. this is that rain that we had move through earlier, that soaking, drenching rain. mainly during the afternoon hours. tomorrow morning, most of us will be dry. and look at what we're going to start off. 6:00 a.m., washington, near 70 degrees. the suburbs in the 60s. 64. so comfortably cool if you're going for that early morning jog, walk bike ride. as we work our way toward the midday hours starting to notice for sunshine to develop. skycast forecasts what the clouds will look like. by noon, temperature in washington, around 80 degrees. the suburbs in the upper 70s as we get into the afternoon hours. it's a nice, classic summer day. a little bit humid. the temperatures are warm. it's not unbearably hot outside. temperatures at 2:00 p.m. in the low to mid-80s across the area. nice tomorrow evening if you want to have the cookout there. the tacoma park fireworks also looking good for tomorrow night. i do want to point out there is a chance for some thunderstorms tomorrow afternoon and evening. well to the west of washington over the mountains back around the i-91 corridor. elsewhere is dry throughout the day. 9:00 p.m. tomorrow evening taking the dog out late night, looking good for that. future weather showing you 9:00 a.m. monday as we return to work, showers are likely. throughout the day, we'll continue to track showers at times, especially west of the i-95 corridor. but still those of you east of i-95 have the threat of showers as well. and then the chance of thunderstorms by the afternoon hours. 75 degrees is the temperature right now in washington. and a high tomorrow of about 86. monday, a good likelihood that you're dealing with showers at times. l otherwise, plenty of clouds. not a great pool day. tuesday, mostly to partly sunny skies. maybe a late-day we get to see these two go head to head. they were neck and neck through most of it u. but chestnut can't close the gap. stonie downs chestnut. chestnut only ate 60 hot dogs. >> it makes me nervous
