Workers in New York program who obeyed state’s Covid orders and stayed home could face big tax bill

Now, some of those workers could face large state income tax bills because they worked from home.
Employees of companies in the Start-Up New York economic development program have been warned that because they worked from home they may have lost a promised exemption from paying any state income taxes.
Empire State Development, the state’s economic development arm, sent an email to 309 businesses in the program Feb. 17 warning them that employees who did not work exclusively in their employers’ approved business locations within a Start-Up NY zone in 2020 are not eligible for the exemptions.
