Employees of companies in the Start-Up New York economic development program have been warned that because they worked from home they may have lost a promised exemption from paying any state income taxes. Empire State Development, the state’s economic development arm, sent an email to 309 businesses in the program Feb. 17 warning them that employees who did not work exclusively in their employers’ approved business locations within a Start-Up NY zone in 2020 are not eligible for the exemptions.
