with that. top story. team usa winning two more medals, including that gold for the first time ever in curling after a thrilling match against sweden. a silver in the big air snowboarding competition. the ice and team usa in events where not everyone was an american favorite, many olympians battled their way on to the podium. >> five on the board for team usa. >> reporter: this is gold on ice. the american curling team bumping off the swedes. sweeping their way to the first gold medal ever. >> shuster stays hot. >> reporter: a stunning comeback after blanked in vancouver and sochi. >> it is let's start with you, sir. how does it feel being an olympic gold medalist? >> it's -- it's starting to sink in a little bit. back in 2006, we got the first medal for the u.s., bronze medal. this is pretty darn special. >> pretty special. tyler, let's bring you in here. it is called the mir-ac-curl on ice. you were on a hot winning streak. winning five games in a row. what changed? how did you pull it off? >> you know, honestly, the best thing for us is to play canada the next day. when you play against the best team in the world, you have nothing to lose. you play loose and confident and against that team, that is how you start the hot streak. >> a canadian team you hadn't beaten in competition. you had to beat them not once, but twice. john, you have an incredible comeback story. cut from the team four years ago and you start your own team and at one point, you guys were known as the rejects. and now the rejects are all wearing gold medals. >> yeah. we didn't get rejected for long. this team came together back in the fall of 2014 and actually won a couple national championships and represented the u.s. in those and made the medal round each time. we knew we had a chance coming in here. we upgraded to something a little bit bigger. >> joe, you have been part of both medals for the curling team. what do you say to those who say curling isn't a sport? >> we put in a lot of hard work in the gym and on the ice. challenge to come and try it and not be sore the next day. >> matt hamilton, you have some celebrity doppelgangers out there. i wanted to put up the picture of with it. >> congratulations, guys. we are so happy and proud of you. >> thank you. >> thank you very much. >> let's get to the other big news. the new charges facing the former campaign manager manafort as his top aide pleads guilty. is this another sign the special counsel getting closer to the white house? we have correspondent kelly o'donnell with more. >> reporter: good morning, sheinelle. the white house is not commenting on the charges of paul manafort in the guilty plea of rick gates. this stems from the business life and not work of the campaign. both men indicted that included money laundering, but now the special counsel is bringing forward of evidence of additional crimes. the special counsel squeeze. late friday, new charges levelled against paul manafort. trump's campaign chairman in 2016. manafort accused of making secret payments to former european politicians to get them to take positions favorable to ukraine. while manafort worked for a russia backed ukraine leader in 2012 and 2014. the new charges following a big break friday. manafort's former top aide rick gates pleaded guilty to conspiracy and lying to investigators. gates is now cooperating with the special counsel. manafort responded that he hoped gates would have had the strength to continue the battle to prove our innocence. president trump was not asked about the russia investigation during his conference with australia's prime minister. he did respond to the white house security clearance controversy. saying he would not overrule the chief of staff with the interim clearance. >> that is up to general kelly. general kelly will make that call. >> reporter: in a raucous and free wheeling speech earlier friday. >> second amendment. >> reporter: the president talked gun policy. pushing for teachers with gun skills to carry weapons at schools. even though an armed deputy at the florida high school did not confront the gunman. >> he decided not to go in. that was not his finest moment. that i can tell you. >> reporter: president trump says he will take action. >> we want to be powerful and very strong on background checks and especially as it pertains to the mentally ill. >> reporter: late friday there was a scare here that had the white house on lockdown for a time. there now has been a woman, a 35-year-old woman from tennessee, taken into custody after the van she was driving went into a barricade. secret service officers said she spotted a pistol and forcibly removed her from the van and took her into custody. according to police reports, there were incidents where she tried to gain access in the white house. craig. >> kelly, thank you. now to the emotional scene in parkland, florida where teachers returned to the school on friday for the first time since the horrific shooting. this as we get new information about another possible warning sign missed about the shooter. maya rodriguez is in parkland this morning. maya, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, craig. well, right now, we know that parents and teachers and students tomorrow will be able to go back to stoneman douglas high school for the first time since the shooting. teacher s went in yesterday for the first time to get belongings and assess what is going on in the school and classrooms. all of this as the investigation uncovered new details. this morning, new details about the tip called into the fbi last month. a person the agency describes as close to 19-year-old shooting suspect nikolas cruz warned authorities that cruz was quote going to explode and feared he would be getting into a school and just shooting the place up. the fbi did not follow-up on that tip. all this while on friday teachers at stoneman douglas returned to a campus shaken by tragedy. >> this school is my home and i'm very angry. >> reporter: the shooting that killed 17 prompted florida governor rick scott to announce new measures. raising the age limit to buying a firearm to 21. >> i know some are advocating a take away for second amendment rights. that is not the answer. >> reporter: the governor calling for law enforcement officer to be assigned to every public school. the broward sheriff's office says scot peterson, the armed officer at stoneman douglas did not confront the shoot errer or enter the building. peterson resigned. he has not responded to requests for comments from nbc news. other officers did respond to the shooting. including sergeant jeff henrik. his wife works at the school. his son a student there. >> by the grace of god, when they walked in the hallway, they found each other. >> reporter: the school now preparing to take on a lesson in learning and healing. >> we will take it one day at a time. one class at a time. one minute at a time. >> reporter: now as for those injured in the shooting more than a week later, three remain in the hospital. all in fair condition. craig. >> maya rodriguez, thank you. dylan, a lot of folks dealing with a lot of rain. >> a lot of rain and rain for days. that is causing the issue. the story is the heavy rain. 43 million people under flood watch this morning from the northeast part of texas to pennsylvania. homes, cars and football fields seen here in kentucky are almost completely submerged. flooding for days is causing rivers to rise like the one in michigan and the ohio river has been flooding as well. heavy through southern illinois and parts of central indiana and back through dallas as well. if we go to last monday, the rain has been training over the same areas from texas through especially arkansas and all the way up to pennsylvania since monday. that's why all of this water is trickling into the rivers and lakes and the streams and that's causing the concern for more flooding. we have some flash flood warnings in effect across eastern oklahoma and northwestern arkansas. as we go through the day today, the front will finally start to move east. another very wet day through texas and arkansas and southern illinois. the front will move east for sunday. we could see severe storms. there is the possibility of damaging winds and isolated tornadoes. especially in good morning. today we're looking at temperatures a little warmer than average into the 50s. that comes with a lot of gray, rainy conditions. 53 in center city. 52 for the high in lands dale. allentown making it to the low 50s. on and off rain. chances aren't as high for new jersey, the shore or delaware. the temperatures at 5 in smyrna. and that's and that's yo >> i actually didn't come up with the name. back in the day, the snowboarding guys doing new grabs and before the spins and stuff. you know, i got to figure out the history to the name. i have been asked that question so many times. when i figure it out, i will let you know. >> you looked fearless out there, kyle. i caught you a couple of times in pyeongchang. do you ever get scared if. >> -- scared? >> no, fear doesn't cross my mind. it is more nerves. you know, it is always scary trying new tricks. especially with that grab. i guess. >> speaking of fear not crossing your mind. what goes through your mind? when the final results were in and you won silver medal. we saw red gerard who won gold in the men's slopestyle. he came over to congratulate you. what was going through your mind? >> i mean so many emotions going through my mind. i was blown away i got second. i was really happy for my best friends with me. i wish red was up there and kenworthy. >> i heard your dad got emotional as well when you won. what did he say to you? what did you say to him? >> i don't think many words were exchanged. more of him crying and me hugging my parents. that was the best to share this moment with them. they are my biggest supporters. they got me here today. >> what now? our producers thought it would be great to put natalie morales and dylan dreyer and myself on wooden skis to try old fashioned korean skiing. >> if it is ever an olympic event, we will not be part of it. >> from mikaela shiffrin's run to jamie anderson's smooth slopestyle, the mountains around pyeongchang have seen stunning feats the past two weeks. our next excursion was not one of them. we are trying out a unique way of skiing that has roots in the region going back hundreds of years. the locals made skis from maple wood carving and branding into this shape. >> this wasn't for fun. it was more necessity. >> absolutely. >> absolute necessity. >> he is the head of the nearby village and he met our group to show us how to ski. >> there are no edges on these skis. what is the proper position to stand? get low. >> there is no chair lift here. we strapped on snowshoes to help us hike up the mountain. this is an helaborate knotting system. we have a wooden stick. and final tips from mr. park. >> what are the chances we will fall on skis?
