even the woman shot a few times in the stomach. police don't know if the victims were the intended targets or not. investigators say that the way the gunman carried out this triple shooting made clear that he had no problem terrorizing the entire neighborhood. >> all i was hearing like was -- like gunfire back-to-back. >> reporter: with two men and one woman wounded, investigators wasted no time to track down the gunman who sprayed bullets. witnesses say he was in a gold minivan. >> the shooter was standing up and his upper body was coming out of a sunroof. and he was firing an assault rifle in the direction of all three victims. >> reporter: from their doorways, neighbors watched as detectives mark the nine spent shell casings on the street. >> we found two separate caliber spent shell casings. we don't know if that one shooter used a separate weapon or there was a second shooter involved. >> i pray every day. i pray every day for my safety and my family. >> reporter: the victims were standing outside on the same block as this church when they were gunned. it was still daylight at 6:00 in the evening. residents like this woman who didn't want to share her name, explained that the violence keeps her indoors most of the time. >> somebody needs to do something about this. this is crazy. >> reporter: police are hoping that they'll get a break in the case either from the witnesses they've been talking to or from surveillance video from cameras posted around the neighborhood. reporting live outside of temple hospital in north philadelphia, i'm rosemary connors, nbc 10 news. tonight the community is mourning the death of one of their own. indy car race driver justin wilson died from injuries he suffered from an accident at pocono raceway. he was hit in the head by a piece of debris that had broken off another car. wilson was taken a hot where he died. the 37-year-old leaves behind a wife and two daughters. >> justin's elite ability to drive a race car was matched by his unwavering kindness, character and humility making him one. most respected members of the paddock. >> the last car driver to die because of an incident was dan weldon who was killed in 2011. sky force 10 over a sinkhole in kensington. this was at tulip and hunting done streets. they closed down the intersection to make repairs. no word on how long it will take to fix that crater. tonight, stock futures are up, despite today's wall street selloff. by the time the closing bell rang, the dow plummeted 588 points to close at 15,871. it could have been worse. at one point, it was down 1,000 points before it bounced back. with the markets in shanghai down again right now, people are wondering what to do with their money. experts call it an historic stunning drop, nest eggs, portfolios plummeting. pushing back when he will retire. >> i usually don't spend that much time thinking about this because it doesn't help. >> others are weathering a storm invested for the long haul and not for short term gain. >> i think given the articles that i read that it should be bouncing back. >> the dow posted a third consecutive drop of 300 or more points. the number of times it's done that in history, zero imt how do we shelter our nest eggs. jim cramer said it's about investing smart. >> if you're 100% invested that's a mistake. >> he says we should prepare for losses 5% to 10% the next couple of weeks. perspective right now, we're down about 4%. >> if you have cash on the sidelines depending upon your age, there's options. there's great opportunities here. >> analysts say this isn't a stock market crash, it's a correction. investigators are worried about china's slowing economy since they're a big importer of american goods. turning now to the weather. nbc 10 first alert radar is tracking storms with the potential to move into our area. let's bring in sheena parveen. what's happening now? what can we expect by morning? >> not everybody is seeing the rain. only a few spots are seeing the rain this evening. overnight, we could easily see more showers. that could end by the morning. most of the area is dry. we had a flood advisory but that's been canceled. that rain has come to a quick end. areas, maybe light rain near dover. salem and cumberland counties. big cluster of storms in maryland is weakening. future weather is indicating more showers building up before a cold front actually moves through. once it moves through, it will take the rain with it. we'll see nice conditions tomorrow. by 8:00 tomorrow morning, we'll have the clouds around but see more sunshine developing. by 10:00 in the morning, temperatures around 77 degrees. by noon tomorrow, less humidity. nice change from today. temperatures still warm, though. in the upper 80s by the afternoon. even nicer weather later this week and we're tracking the newest tropical storm in the atlantic. we'll talk more about that coming up. >> sheena, thank you very much. kathleen kane will stand trial. that decision was made after a hearing including a staffer turning against her. one of the most memorable moments happened outside the courtroom when kane's twin helped to fake out news cameras. take a look. right there in the circle. that's her twin in the blazer. many cameras followed her not realizing that kane was walking behind in the red dress. as george spencer reports, she maintains her innocence. >> do you have any response to what happened in court today. >> surrounded by guards, she walked out of court without saying a word. >> any reaction at all? >> the top prosecutor was the defendant and a judge ruled all the charges against her will stand. including lying to a grand jury and leaking confidential information. yet, defense attorneys insisted the truth is trickling out. >> the entire story hasn't come out yet. a little more of the story evolved today. >> the prosecution started today with this man, a bombshell witness thatu given his history as a member of kane's inner circle. before the judge -- the attorney raised the issue of pornographic e-mails among state prosecutors and judges. the prosecutors in this case said it's a distraction from the issue at hand. >> this is a case about things that she said to a grand jury. this is not about extracurricular things. >> reporter: after the hearing, nbc 10 pressed the attorneys on the porn allegations and how they might possibly be related to allegations that kane lied to a grand jury. >> i'm not having a debate with you. please. >> reporter: today's hearing was only the start of months of pretrial work. the next will be kane's official arraignment in mid-october. reporting in montgomery county, george spencer, nbc 10 news. turning now to pennsylvania's budget battle. governor tom wolf blasted republican lawmakers over their plan to override his budget filled veto piece by piece tomorrow. lawmakers this afternoon, the governor said gop leaders can't negotiate in good faith while staging a "unconstitutional and unproductive move." pennsylvania has been operating without a budget for nearly two months. this shut down funding to a number of safety net services. speaking of funding, tomorrow another court hearing is scheduled for a charter school. they're fighting the state for more money. they rallied outside the courthouse. governor wolf recommended cutting the amount per pupil by more than half because they're $20 million in debt already. this could delay the start of the school year. they're going straight to the top. tomorrow, civil rights leader plan to deliver a letter to the u.s. attorney for new jersey calling for his intervention in a deadly police involved shooting. >> show me your hands. >> this is video from a traffic stop in cumberland county last december. that's where police shot and killed jerome reed. last thursday, a grand jury decided not to indict the officers involved. they're now on administrative leave with pay. and to decision 2016. is president obama taking sides in the democratic primary? that's what some people are wondering after comments made by josh ernest today. this comes after growing speculation whether vice president joe biden will run. the vp had a meeting with senator elizabeth warren this weekend and hired a new communication director who ran john edwards presidential campaign. here's what ernest said, the president isn't torn over whether to endorse his vp or former secretary of state hillary clinton listen. >> he's been on a national ticket for two cycles. you could make the case that there's probably no one in american politics today who has a better understanding of exactly what is required to mount a successful national presidential campaign. >> now, ernest said the president would likely endorse the candidate in the democratic primary. we turn now to sky force 10 live over breaking news. a suspicious death in cumberland county. police around st. claire drive, they got a call about a car sitting in a parking lot for a long time. they found a dead man in the driver's seat. no word on his identity. stay with nbc 10 for updates as we continue to work this story. freaking out. >> fire an amusement park ride goes up in flames. no one was injured thanks in part to an alert worker. mark san antonhia reports. concern quickly spread at the amusement park. >> we were freaking out. we and operated by a new jersey family for 111 years, a spokesperson telling news 4, their park employee started up the ride for a test run prepping it for the day when -- >> he smelled something. he alerted our mechanics. the mechanic went to get the necessary tool and in that short period of time there was a small electric fire. >> moments later a fire tore through the ride, black smack filled the air, the park was evacuated and an employee being praised. >> he did a great job. he noticed that something was not right and he alerted the necessary people within our organization. >> safety first for the people here at the park. >> that was marc santia reporting. the park reopened in the afternoon. no word when that ride will be up and running. it's hard to believe, but we're 32 days away from the pope's visit to philadelphia. how about this? today local inmates put finishing touches on the commemorative chair. it will be presented as a gift to the pontiff from the correctional facility. it was designed by the philadelphia prison system staff and inmates. they carved it out of a solid block of walnut. >> it's a mind changer. actually, being incarcerated opens up your mind. i two different pandas. dna tests will have to determine who the father is and what gender the twins are. it will take a month before the cubs look less like aliens and more like pandas. >> it takes time to grow into the cuteness but they're still cute. >> for this endangered species, every new nursery addition is a reason to celebrate. well, certainly not everybody saw the rain this evening. but some of you did. especially if you were around the allentown area. the poconos. we have the showers in the forecast for the rest of tonight. we can still see overnight tonight and very early in the morning. tomorrow morning, mainly along the shore. then, we have days of comfortable weather. we're talking several days of humidity. an update from the national hurricane center. tropical storm erica has formed well out in the atlantic. this one may pose a bit of a threat to parts of the united states. we'll show you that in a second. 8:00 tomorrow morning, areas north and west of philadelphia, lehigh valley, poconos, temperatures around 70 degrees. philadelphia, 73. mix of clouds with sun. for new jersey and delaware, closer to the shore, you could see a chance of a shower for the morning commute. most of the area currently is on the dry side. we did have showers around earlier today. not too much around right now. we could see more moving in from the west. when you see maryland, that area of moisture has really died down. but it could pick back up again overnight tonight. so the showers will stay in the forecast through the overnight hours and then much better tomorrow. here's future weather. it is trying to pick up on showers very early. by 8:00, we could see some in new jersey, possibly delaware. but the clearing starts from west to east through the day. humidity drops through tomorrow afternoon. it's going to be a pretty nice day. then we even go into wednesday. low humidity. that's even going to stick around for thursday and friday. we have a lot of really nice days in store for us. now, danny, we've been talking about that for the past week. it's the remnants near puerto rico. danny should not be a big deal at all. that's continuing to die. tropical storm erica, this is farther back off to the east. this one is closer to africa. it's still in the tropical atlantic. 45 mile an hour winds moving to the west at 20 miles an hour. barely a tropical storm. look at what the storm track says. mostly to the west and staying in a tropical storm strength most of the time is expected but the cone of uncertainty takes it towards of the bahamas, possibly florida by the weekend. we'll be watching it as we get closer. warm and humid overnight, 70 for the low in philadelphia. mid-60s north and west. tomorrow, becoming mostly sunny through the day. humidity will be dropping through the day. you'll notice that, mid to upper 80s. still a warm day. but a lot drier outside. wednesday, thursday, friday, take a look at the morning temperatures. mid-60s. afternoon temperatures about the low 80s thursday and friday. i think it's going to feel a little bit more like spring this week. >> you know what, i'll take it. thank very much, sheena. nbc
