this time of year, parents and students all over the area are getting ready to head back to school. on top of shopping for school supplies, backpacks, uniforms, parents also have to make sure health forms and vaccinations are up to date. joining me now is cheryl fattibene, a minuteclinic nurse practitioner. thank you for joining us, cheryl. >> thank you. >> my apologies for botching the name, too. >> that's okay. >> let's talk about physicals for your student. they're required, especially if your child wants to play sports. >> correct. so, sports exams are very important for any child that's interested in parring in sports. the piaa requires them so parents need to get their kids in early, make sure they complete all the forms and get them in on time so kids can start practices on time. we pick up lots of things on sports exam we might not pick up on a regular physical exam so they're essential. >> vaccinations range from if your child is young to college age. >> in the state of pennsylvania at seventh grade entry, kids need to have a tdap, known as a tetanus. it's tetanus, diptheria vaccine and also meningitis vaccine. the tdap is relatively new and helps prevent against the whooping cough. that's a very important vaccine at seventh grade. also in seventh grade is the meningitis vaccine. we've seen outbreaks of meningitis in college kids so they start out in seventh grade and get a booster at college. then college, as you said, there's a whole different set of vaccines. so, you just need -- and every school is a little different. you can bring your forms into any minuteclinic in local philadelphia and new jersey area, we'll look over those for you and make sure your children are ready and safe. >> great advice. of course, when you think about good advice, sometimes common sense is the best thing here. you can't forget about lice, basic hygiene like we were talking about before. also to wear sunscreen. >> right. so, sunscreen there's a lot of misconceptions about sunscreen. i think the most important thing that people forget is that you need to put sunscreen 30 minutes before you actually go in the pool or water. >> something we all forget as adults even. >> we do. we do forget it. what happens when you put the sunscreen on, it gets absorbed into the skin. that's how sunscreen protects you. so, put it on 30 minutes early. remember, if you can remember 30 and 30, so spf in the broad spectrum sunscreens are the ones we recommend and 30 spf is your ideal. more than, that you're not getting really much additional protection. less than that you're not getting enough. >> really good information here. lice, do you want to talk about lice really quick, too? >> basically about that, i know with camps, many of the camps are screening for it. the types of lice that we're seeing nationally right now, many are resistant to the traditional medications. so if you think there's an issue, please bring your child and yourself, your family members in, we can check you again, also at minuteclinic for those things and we can make recommendations for some new products that are very effective. >> sounds like a great way to wrap this up. thank you for joining us. >> thank you for having me. wie had a five-day heat wave and higher humidity helping to create the showers and heavy downpours that are going to be coming this afternoon and into tonight. we had some of that yesterday. we should have more of that around later today and tonight. the heat wave will be ending before the week is over. and there may be showers lingering at the shore for part of it. the eagles are playing at lincoln financial on saturday night. should be more comfortable than it is right now. 88 degrees. feels like 92 with that higher humidity. it's only 79 in trenton. get a couple showers and the temperature just plunges. you can go down 10 degrees in a matter of minutes. that's what happened yesterday in a few spots. going to happen in more spots today. 87 millville right now with very, very high humidity. now, at the shore, we have that onshore wind so it's going to limit how warm it's going to get. atlantic city and marina is 81 degrees. now, we have some showers in the area. kind of scattered around. more in delaware than in other parts of the area. but each one of these showers has the potential to be fairly heavy. you see these little red areas? that's heavy rain. when you have tiny showers, they're light. not in cases like this. so bensalem getting one. then another following it. then father to the south we've got showers north of smyrna and newark and that will continue. more activity to the west. that's what's going to be coming in later today. so, some of the delaware activity meets this central pennsylvania activity and now you got a lot of activity. a lot of heavy rain, even some thunderstorms, even as this area goes by, there's more back to the west. so, you might get one round this afternoon. a bit of a break and another round coming tonight. by tomorrow morning, just about everybody's going to have seen some rain. then the question is, how quickly does this moisture get out of the way. computer models disagreeing on that. here's the hour by hour, you can see this computer suggesting philadelphia is down to 78. one shower can do that and then go back up. here comes some of that heavier rain and storms during the evening hours. the temperature doesn't really drop a whole lot overnight because it's staying pretty humid and then that area goes offshore. the question offshore is how far it will go because it may get pushed back to the coast as we head into the weekend. there have been some big changes in the last several hours with danny. it's now a hurricane. 75-mile-an-hour winds. still over 1,000 miles east over the easternmost caribbean island. it's way out in the middle. you can see the eye right now. that's an indication that you've got a but the issue is it may not strengthen a whole lot more than it is. as it heads towards puerto rico, the hurricane center's latest track keeping it as a category 1 hurricane and may be weakening beyond that. the main reason is all of the exceptionally dry air in parts of the caribbean and into the atlantic. there's the storm. as it moves towards the northwe northwest, it's going to be moving into dryer and dryer air. when that happens, that doesn't help. it intensifies. let's put it that way. steamy. some storms coming in. again locally heavy rains and localized flooding. high temperatures near 90 degrees today. not quite as warm as tomorrow. some morning showers and storms. then the humidity starts going down in the afternoon. but it starts coming back up over the weekend. that's why sunday has a little better chance of rain and especially toward the shore. that system just offshore that might be coming back a little bit. that's why we have the chance of showers on sunday. then we start to dry out as we go into early next week. coming up this afternoon at 3:00, it's "ellen," jim carrey and minnie driver stop by. the nbc10 investigators have found the number of hit-and-runs in philadelphia is skyrocketing. today at 4:00 they're mapping out thousands of cases. we'll show you the deadliest stretch of roadway for hit-and runs. before we get to that and before we go, we're tracking showers, tracking thunderstorms. glenn's back here to tell us about the timing of this. what can we expect? >> we have just a few small but heavy showers around parts of the area now. that is going to continue to increase. by the middle of the afternoon, say, about 3:00, a lot of area covered with locally heavy rain. you want to pay attention to the weather today. whether it's on tv, online, on your phone. there's so many ways to get information. >> it's a great point there today. thank you for watching "nbc10 news" at 11:00. i'm keith jones. for glenn "hurricane" schwartz and all of us here at "nbc10 news," have a great day. >> john: roman told you that i was leaving salem pd to join the isa? >> marlena: i guess he thought you told me that already. so, it's true, hmm? >> john: i'm not gonna lie to you. >> marlena: you mean you're not going to lie to me anymore. >> john: i was gonna tell you, doc, i was just waiting for the right time and place. >> marlena: what, so you weren't sure that i would support you in this? >> john: was i wrong? >> jj: you want to know if i would go undercover with the dea...for you? paige, that's the only reason why i'm doing it. [club music] >> clyde: i ordered a single malt double neat. >> rafe: yeah, i heard you. >> clyde: you plan on pouring it? >> rafe: nope.
