And this is a huge initiative to try to clear the shelters and get more animals in because of overcrowding, which is why were waiving some of the fees at local shelters. What can you say about the spay and neutering of animals . Because thats really critical as far as adoptions and overcrowding. Absolutely. So spaying and neutering, the spca thinks its really, really important that you spay and neuter your pets to control overpopulation. There are over three million homeless pets in the united states. And one of the main reasons is because spay and neutering isnt necessarily something everybody feels they need to do, and we believe that it is something for the health and safety of your animals. Spaying and neutering can actually add three to five years to your pets life, so its not only about overpopulation, its also about extending the life of your pet. We have two sisters here. Great pyrenees puppies. But its not just puppies. You can adopt an adult dog, too, right . If you dont want to go through the puppy thing. Yes, the puppy responsibility is a lot. And we have a lot of 1 to 3 to 4yearold dogs here. We have a lot of american pit bull mixes. We have a lot of shepherd mixes. We really have a lot. We really hope everybody comes out and just sees our different kinds of dogs. We have so many different kinds. And if someones not ready to adopt, there are other things they can do to help in shelters. Absolutely. So we love volunteers. We have a great, great team of volunteers, and were always looking for new ones, so thats definitely a way people can get involved. Its not just this shelter. It is your local shelter. So were not just telling you to come to one location. You need to go online, nbc10. Com, or cleartheshelters. Com and youll find a shelter near you that is participating in this. So there is a location that is participating in clear the shelter, so were trying to get as many animals adopted today as possible. I think a lot of people dont realize the importance of having an animal in your home. It can really change things for you. Animals provide that unconditional love. They make great come pan yons. My dogs are my best friends. Pan. My dogs are my best friends. More than two dozen shelters in our area. This is a National Initiative today partnering with nbc universal. If you can, make room in your home to adopt a cute little one, maybe like this one. This is charley. Shes 8 weeks old. Got a lot of energy. We arent sure quite how big charl charleys going to get, right . Shes probably going to be pretty big. Great pyrenees is a big breed. She does have the long coat, so shell have some grooming needs. But shell be a great addition to the family. Dont be afraid to ask questions about the animal, what it might become. Because this is a puppy. So you want to remember that. They do grow up and they eat a lot of food and they need a lot of loving, though. Maybe you give that. Exactly. And as far as your situation is at home, it is really critical to know about these dogs and how theyre going to be, because we really dont want the return rate to be high either on these animals. Go online to find a location near you, and hopefully you can take an animal home with you today. All right, thank you, guys. Really appreciate it. More information now on your screen. You can always go to our website or check out the nbc 10 news app. Were trying to raise awareness today on social media. Just be sure to use cleartheshelters. This is a big win for you, because you obviously want to see a lot of these animals adopted so they dont have to euthanize them. Were really excited about this event. Its great that nbc 10 put this on for us. Were happy because we can do a large number of adoptions in one day. But also many of our Partner Organizations like the pspca and paws are also participating in this. And they will then be able to have more room to take animals from our facilities, too.
