parts of missouri. the heat index could climb to 110. the normally cool great lakes where folks go to vacation could top 90 tigers for -- degrees for the first time since 2013. in florida you could be looking at temperatures above 100 degrees. we are in the throes of the longest stretch of 90 teing the tedegree days this year. you could be looking at at least eight straight days of heat. if you live in the pacific northwest, the next heat wave making its way to you by the weekend. we'll look at that later. >> thank you very much. appreciate that. officials are trying to figure out what caused a massive tree to fall on children outside of a museum in pasadena, california sending at least eight children to the hospital. jacob rascon has the latest on that. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. these are children as young as 6 this morning. two of them a boy and a girl remain hospitalized crushed by a giant pine tree as a today camp turned into a parent's worst nightmare. summer camp may never be the same at the kid space museum in pasadena after a 75-year-old, 75-foot-tall pine tree came crashing down on campers without warning. >> i heard a giant crash and all of the sudden people started to run. then screaming. >> i went out there and started grabbing little kids out of the way. >> reporter: 33 campers, ages 6 to 8 scrambled for their lives. eight didn't escape the fall as frantic parents became first responders. >> the teachers were beside themselves. we were just screaming. and i tell you, the sight of a child's injured body -- >> reporter: firefighters armed with chainsaws pulling two children out from under the branches. >> we have three patients two critical. >> reporter: rushed to the nearest hospital in critical condition, suffering blunt force trauma. >> we need two companies, one company per patient, and we are going to be transporting. >> reporter: a half dozen other campers treated for bruises, cuts and scrapes. >> there was a lot of panic with the parents crying and everybody scattering around. >> reporter: a harrowing scene as a day at camp turned into a nightmare. pasadena owns the land and the tree. later today, they will send a tree expert to determine the cause of the fall. right now they don't know. the camp is scheduled to re-open later today. matt and savannah? >> jacob, thank you very much. the new york prison worker who helped two killers stage a brazen escape has pled guilty to her crimes. joyce mitmitchell's confession is revealing never before heard details about her involvement in this. john yang is on the story. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. mitchell wakes up in the countile jail a convicted felon after pleading guilty to the charges. that document obtained by nbc news details her crimes. >> are you pleading because you are fwilguilty. >> reporter: detailing in her own words over 20 hours what she did for richard matt and david sweat and why. i was caught up in the fantasy, she said. i enjoyed the attention, the feeling both of them gave me and the thought of a different life. >> matt got her feeling good about herself, better than she had for a period of time. she was swept off her feet. >> reporter: she got to know sweat and matt in the prison sewing shop. she admitted smuggling in hacksaw blades, tril bits chisels, padded gloves and glasses with lights. first she said she thought they were using them to make picture frames. she said she knew for two months they were going to escape and agreed to be the get away driver. >> the aspect of the three of them being the primary people involved is unbelievable. >> reporter: matt and sweat fwaifgave her a list of supplies to bring when she picked them up. cell phone, gps, clothes, a shotgun, money and tents. what to do about joyce mitchell's husband called the glitch? they would kill him. but she backed out. i really to love my husband. he's the reason i didn't meet inmate matt and inmate sweat. still standing by his wife lyle mitchell was in court and visited her in jail. >> why? >> i love her. >> reporter: as part of the plea agreement mitchell agreed to serve at up to the maximum term in prison of seven years. she'll be sentenced september 28. >> john thank you very much. in the meantime the nfl's deflategate scandal appears headed to federal court after tom brady's four-game suspension was upheld by the nfl commissioner roger goodell. the ruling containing a bomb shell that tom brady had his cell phone destroyed before he met with fwrartinvestigators. peter alexander has the latest on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. get ready for a court battle. it's not the crime but the cover up. much of goodell's 20-page decision focuses on the fact that tom brady deliberately destroyed the cell phone he used throughout the scandal and the league admitted that was tampering with evidence. they call the entire appeals process a sham. the nfl's biggest quarterback playing defense. tom brady teeing off on the league's decision to uphold his suspension over dfgeflategate calling it disappointing. but brady had the sim card and cell phone destroyed. ordering his personal assistant to do so on or about march 6, 2015 the very day brady was interviewed by fwrart sinvestigators. that kept text messages away from the investigators. the league saying the electronic data could no longer be recovered. goodell wrote rather than failing to cooperate mr. brady made a deliberate effort to under mine the investigation and conceal evidence. brady's camp insists tom was transparent. the players union said the league based the suspension on a smoke screen of irrelevant text messages instead of admitting that they have all the phone records they asked for. they plan to appeal in federal court on bray ti's behalf. brady maintained his innocence at news conferences. is tom brady a cheater? it's going to federal court. if he applies for an injunction fine. the case goes forward. he can play the first four games. if he ultimately loses he could face suspension in the middle of the season. >> the legal experts i have read weighing in on this say generally speaking a court won't grant an injunction unless they believe you have a good chance to win after it's reheard. he has to make the case. what it hinges on isn't whether the evidence would stand up in criminal court. it's whether under article 46 of the agreement between the players and the league goodell has the right to do it. whether it's the right decision is separate from whether he can uphold the penalty and hear the appeal. >> it's about process, not merit. >> and people are comparing it to the dallas cowboys and domestic violence. he got four games. are these comparable? >> not even remotely. but the league can say he sat out all but one game last year and was paid. this year it was ten games and an arbitrator reduced it to four. they say it is consistent with penalties for using performance enhancing drugs on the first offense. >> stay in new york. we'll need you. >> i'll go to the cot in the back room. >> we have to start at 7:00 a.m. unfortunately. >> unfortunately yes. >> now to natalie with the headlines. >> a florida man is in custody charged with plotting to set off a backpack bomb at a beach. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the fbi said he was inspired by isis and came to the attention of authorities in april after advocating violence on facebook. he was arrested after what he received a bomb he asked someone to build for him. he told under cover sources working for the fbi he wanted to bury and set off a bomb in the florida beach, a marathon in the keys south beach miami or both. prosecutors identify him as a 23-year-old from key west florida, harlem suarez. according to the fbi he made an isis recruitment video in may saying we will destroy america and divide it in two. we will raise our black flag on top of your white house. court documents say he placed a mail order for an ak-47 assault-style rifle like this in may but never got it because he mixed up the paperwork. he wanted to build a bomb didn't know how and never had explosives. they say he paid one of the under cover operatives a hundred dollars for what he thought was a bomb was arrested when he received it. made by the fbi, it was a dud. harlem suarez is no terrorist, says his lawyer. >> he's never been arrested. he has no criminal history prior to this arrest. he's distraught. >> he's been ordered held in a federal detention center and will be in court next week for a detention hearing. natalie? why some are paying up to 29% more for just what they check on that box. >> we'll get to that. let's start this half hour with outrage around the world over the killing of a well known lion in africa. the american dentist who hunted that animal is now wanted by police and also speaking out. here's nbc's kevin tibbles. >> reporter: he was known as the pride of zim it isbabzimbabwe cecil the lion. a favorite around the world until this month when the 13-year-old big cat was killed by an american hunter. according to conservation officials cecil was lured out of the game preserve shot first with a bow and arrow. then 40 hours after being stalked the severely injured animal was finished off with a gun, skinned and beheaded. tuesday the name of the man responsible for the killing was revealed. 55-year-old walter palmer a minneapolis dentist and life long game hunter. the killing sparked outrage from around the world and on social media. >> rich americans flying to africa and killing animals for sport on the wall is unacceptable unacceptable. >> reporter: comedian jimmy kimmel choked up talking about the death. >> why are you shooting a lion in the first place? i'm honestly curious. you want to make this into a positive you can -- [ voice breaking ] -- i'm sorry. okay. i'm good. >> reporter: in a statement, palmer who pled guilty to a license violation after shooting a black bear in wisconsin in 2008 says he hired professional guides secured all the proper permits, and has not been contacted by the authorities. adding in part i deeply regret my pursuit of an activity i love and practice responsibly and legally resulted in the taking of this lion. for critics it wasn't enough. some leaving stuffed toy animals at his home and dental office which abruptly closed yesterday. game officials have arrested his guides on charges of poaching and are looking to talk with the dentist. for "today," kevin tibbles, nbc news, chicago. >> an incredible reaction to this story online. incredible. >> he has to disappear because the reaction is so hard. coast guard officials are acknowledging that time is running out to find the two 14-year-olds who vanished turg a fishing trip off the florida coast. kerry sanders is on the search for us this morning. what's the latest? nbc's bill neely is following the story in london. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. mullah omar was the one-eyed leader of the afghan taliban, the man who welcomed osama bin laden as a guest into the country. after 9/11 he was head of the government that refused to hand bin laden over or expel him. he fled as u.s. and coalition forces swept in. then he led the insurgency that claimed the lives of more than 3,000 troops. now the afghan government said it is looking into reports that he's done. one after fwan intelligence official telling nbc news the government has now come to that conclusion. he didn't say what the evidence for that is. the government he said is convinced mullah omar died two years ago of hepatitis and his death was kept secret to keep the taliban united. nbc news cannot confirm he's dead. there are many reports of his death, the last in may of this year. he's been in hiding since 2001 and in ill health. he's normally so reclusive he's only been photographed twice. one senior taliban official in pakistan said he's 100% sure omar is dead. he won't say more until a successor is chosen. back to you. >> bill neely, thanks so much. two children hospitalized overnight in critical condition after a huge pine tree fell tuesday outside of a summer today catch in pasadena california. several others suffered cuts and bruises. witnesses described the horrible scene as 6 to 8-year-olds ran for their lives while others were pinned beneath the tree. rescuers had to use chainsaws to free them. the land is owned by the city of pasadena. it is sending out a tree expert to determine what caused the accident. former prison sewing teacher joyce mitchell faces up to seven years behind bars after pleading guilty to helping two convicted killers escape. her confession reveals new details of the plot. the 51-year-old said she was caught up in the fantasy and enjoyed the attention of the two men. she brought them alcohol and tools to use for the escape. mitchell confirmed a plot to kill her husband lyle. he was in court on tuesday because he said he still loves his wife. new reaction this morning from super bowl champion tom brady over the nfl's decision to uphold his four-game deflategate suspension. peter alexander has the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. tom brady posting the response on his facebook page. it happened this morning. he writes in part i am very disappointed by the nfl's decision to uphold the four-game suspension against me. i did nothing wrong. no one in the patriots organization did either. brady insisted he didn't destroy his cell phone to hide evidence from the independent investigators. commissioner roger goodell said he upheld it because brady had an assistant destroy his phone and failed to mention it for months. there is no smoking gun and it is manufactured to because they have zero evidence of wrong doing, brady wrote. training camp starts today. brady is expected two children in its care ended up with second and third-degree burns. this is disturbing. >> it is. imagine picking up your kid from day care or camp to see they have been so badly sun burned they are in excruciating pain and end up in the hospital. that's what happened to one oklahoma mother. now she's fighting back. some of the images are graphic. >> ow! >> reporter: two young brothers are recovering after being left to play outside in day care without sun protection according to their mother. >> i can't explain what it's like as a mother to see your children go through that kind of pain not able to answer certain question s questions. mom, please help me, make it stop. it's really hard. >> reporter: she picked up 5-year-old trey and 7-year-old connor from the happiness is a learning center day care friday afternoon. she said she found both boys in severe pain with burns all over their bodies from their field trip to a nearby water park. she said the day care told her they ran out of sunscreen and her boys refused to wear shirts for protection. when their sun burns became progressively worse and their skin began to blister, she took them to a hospital for treatment. they were air lifted to shriner's hospital in galveston, texas. >> knowing that's pretty serious. it was very upsetting. >> reporter: it's raising questions about who, if anyone is at fault. the mother believes the day care center is responsible. she's filed a police report and hired a lawyer. the learning center is closed while the police department looks into the case. the oklahoma department of human services is also conducting an investigation into the incident. the day care facility has been cited by the department of human services 19 times in the past year mainly for staffing signage and scheduling issues records show. its owner geneva young tells nbc news she can't comment until the investigation is complete. >> owie! >> reporter: as for the boys their family is praying for a speedy recovery. >> it's painful for them. it's really hard. i'll be glad when it's over with and they're better. >> when you send your kids to day care or summer camp how can you what's the big deal? >> the idea is the ice cream consistency is nice and creamy. sometimes ice cream sandwiches the ice cream is hard. so you take a bite and the ice cream squirts out the side. you will pour it into a freezer safe dish like this. >> lined with saran wrap. >> that will help us later when we cut out the sandwiches. you can help me. >> you're going to pop this in the freezer. >> overnight. >> i will neat you around. >> you can grab the finished one. >> put this here. out comes the finished one. how are you going to cut them? >> let it hang out for a minute. it's probably too cold. this is the best part. we are going to make funnel cakes. ever made one? >> no. what kind of oil? >> hot oil, 350 degrees. if you could help me by adding a little bit of funnel cake batter. the way it works, i don't know if anyone knows it you hold a funnel close it with your finger at the bottom. to help the batter move along, spray it with nonstick cooking spray and carefully drop the batter into the oil. this takes time but you can play with the shape of the funnel. i'm going back and forth. >> you made the batter from scratch. you can also buy batter. >> yes. funnel cake batter is easy. but you can buy it already made at the store which i have no problem with. then you can get to the fun stuff. >> if you have kids at home be careful with this part. >> exactly. >> this is what they look like. >> this is the first part of the funnel cake ice cream sandwich. >> what dow do in terms of getting the ice cream? >> like this. this is the stomach. these are two balloons placed in the stomach. how does it work? it's a minimally invasive procedure. they stick a tube into the stomach, inflate two medical -- >> air inside? >> no. it's saline. sterile saline. they inflate the balloons. it doesn't approximate how closely the balloons take up much more of the volume of the stomach than what's demonstrated here. but the idea is you put something in the stomach, you're taking the place where food normally would be. we are putting in these donut doughnuts doughnuts. basically it's a simple concept. if you have something in your stomach in place of food you will feel fuller and you won't eat as much. that's the theory. >> not to give mixed messages we are using doughnuts as an example. al said it'sle ees's also a lifestyle change. >> the makers of the device make no secret that these people are counseled and it's in line with appropriate nutritional counseling and hit. >> what kind of weight loss are we talk about and who should have this. >> who is it for. the people who this is for, adults who have a bmi between 30 and 40. other procedures like gastric bypass require the bma to be much higher over 40. we capture a few more people like this who have one co-morbidity for heart disease. they have to have high cholesterol, diabetes or high blood pressure. those are candidates for a procedure like this. the procedure doesn't take long. minimally invasive. they keep it in for six months and take it out. how much weight do they lose? it's a nominal amount. the people who got them lost about 6.8% of body weight. the control group lost about 3%. >> once the balloons come out? >> not everybody keeps it off. a fair number of subjects did. this is something in addition to nutritional counseling and things like that. >> what are the side effects? >> common but not life threatening, nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea. the longer the balloons are in could include perforation, ulcers and obstruction. compared to gastric bypass which is real abdominal surgery, much more significant risk. >> how does it compare to the lap band? >> it's a similar idea. the lap-band places a band around the top of the stomach creating an illusion of fullness because you can't get as much food in. the similarities are the lap-band is also done minimally invasive. both are reversible. they can be taken out. >> 25% to 40% failure rate. >> it's partly because when it's loosened or removed people revert back to habits. >> how much does it cost? >> good question. i don't know. in all likelihood if you meet the rite i can't your insurance company will probably approve it. >> thank you very much. you can leave the doughnuts. >> we just had funnel cakes. >> fascinating. >> thank you. i love this story. i saw it this morning and it made me feel good. i thought i would share it with you. there is a great postman in salt lake city. he was out delivering the mail. he spotted a 12-year-old and the 12-year-old asked him, sir do you have any junk mail i could have? different rider. it puts you in a more upright, comfortable position. you want to show up to work without the sweat. >> you have to size the bike. >> you do. there are a couple of things to think about. make sure when your knees are in the 3:00 position, directly over the ball of your foot. when your leg is fully extended you want bend in there. >> we have alicia here on her bike. >> yep. >> this is about the right size for her. >> this is a good fit. if you put your foot in the 3:00 position, when your foot is out here you should be able to drop a line straight through the pedal. that's what you are looking for. >> folding bikes are a big thing. i ride a bronson. these are turn. >> great bikes. if you don't have a place to lock up your bike at the office you can fold it up in 15 seconds and carry it in. that's a good option as well. >> how about hybrids? >> hybrid bikes. this is for the rider that wants to do a little bit of everything. this was designed for people that want to go faster than you may go on a commuter bike and get off road a little bit. you are in a little bit more forward position than you would be on this bike. you get more energy transfer into the pedals. instead of the skinny road bike tires you have knobby mountain bike tires. >> this is the everyday bike. gears ss as well. some are 12 21. how tune? >> don't get too hung up on it. for the commuter bike that's three speeds great if you have just a few miles to go every day. if you are going for the longer ride and more hills, that's when you want to worry about gears. >> let's talk about families. coming out with the kid bikes. >> lots of options for kids. >> hi! >> you have all the way down to the little bikes with no pedals. it gets kids used to a bike. >> hi, sweetie. ride a professor at nyu school of medicine. tammy gold is a therapist parenting expert and author of "secrets of the nanny whiserror" and daya patterson is a professional gerentologist. thanks for being with us. we asked you the top qualifications for hiring a caregiver whether looking after young ones or older loves ones. you say confidence, professionalism and the ability to match family needs. this is tough for families. whether it's the little ones or the older ones, how do you find the confidence to say this is the person or the right situation for me? >> it's tough. you have to take a leap of faith either way. what you want is to feel safe and secure. you want the person to do their job but you want to know they are committed and motivated to do a great job. how do they interact with the family. you can look at that as well. you can ask them questions to see how they would handle a difficult situation. >> let's get to specific questions you should be asking. i think you ask a question that's universally important whether it is a child or an older person that the caregiver is taking care of and what it should be. >> the most important question you can ask is tell me about a day in the life from the minute you start until the minute you end that's similar to our situation. that question will answer everything you need to know. have they done the job? do they have good experience? are they acting in a way that's similar to how you want your family to be treated and you can ask direct specific questions based on the candidate's answer. it gleans the important information on the how-to of if they can really walk the walk and talk the talk. >> absolutely. you say that's the way you help determine if that person is the right fit for your family right? you have to do your homework, research, background checks, look at the resumé and make the phone calls. >> that's right. verify, verify. if you have done that then it comes down to personality and preference. your older or much older atultdult knows the personalities they mesh with well. also, everyone has preferences in life. when those are respected, that comes to the point of dignity andle real true care for the older atult. >> what about mistakes? mistakes will happen on the job. how do you know if that person will be able to handle the situation. how important is it to say what would you do if something went wrong? >> i always ask that. i feel like maybe the person will try to minimize things a little bit. what you are worried about is they will put their job or pride above your loved one. if they say, i wouldn't make a mistake that's concerning. if they i say, say there was a fall or a child swallowed something they weren't supposed to. you want that person to say, i will call 911, the doctor, you first. they will take responsibility. >> and critically important as an employee, you want to seeredirected. do they take mistakes in stride have motivation to change? they will make mistakes during the trial. they don't know your family. it's how they respond to the error thatle tells you what kind of person they are. >> quickly, sometimes there are warning signs of the situation if the fit isn't right for you. what should you look for?
