back in ten minutes. right now, jessica boyington is tracking how this wet weather is affecting the roads. jessica? >> we are seeing slippery conditions and ponding in some spaces. we're starting off first out in mt. laurel new jersey in 295. traffic moving along nicely. southbound is typically where we see the volume for the morning. right now about a 13-minute drive time headed southbound from 38 up towards the black horse pike. northbound moving along just fine as well. pa turnpike, earlier we saw rain actively falling. not anymore. westbound, eastbound 22 minutes at the most from route 1 up towards valley forge. slippery conditions also come with several accidents. a few out in montgomery county one in shelton ham-- cheltenham and cheltenham avenue. we'll check in with more wet cameras and more mass transit coming up. vai? we start with breaking news. gunfire during a home invasion in philadelphia where one man was shot. nbc 10's katy zachry is live for us in tacony. katy what details have you learned? >> reporter: we just got up to the scene and this home invasion and shooting took place inside 4723 oakmont behind me. we're in the tacony section of philadelphia. and one of the captains in the 15th district tells us that, according to the victim according to the man who was shot inside his home, he tells police two men broke in through the back of his home about an hour ago and shot him in the shoulder. now, that man who was injured, 31 years ole taken to area torresdale hospital where we're told he's in stable condition. police tell us they have a lot of questions surrounding this. they don't have a motive, no arrests have been made. from what they can tell nothing has been stolen from inside this home. there is a second witness to this. the victim's girlfriend was upstairs. she fortunately was uninjured during all of this. she has been talking to police and we just saw her leaving with detectives. they're going to take her back to command and question her further about what took place here this morning. as soon as we have more information, we'll pass it along to you. reporting live in tacony katy zachry, nbc 10 news. >> thank you, katy. new from overnight, people are returning to their homes after a fire in their high-rise apartment building in pennsauken. the fire broke out just before midnight. crews did put it out. one firefighter is being treated for exhaustion. it's 6:03 and 71 degrees. this morning, people around the country are remembering bobbi kristina brown. the daughter of the late music legenddgegend whitney houston and bobbi brown died at the age of 22. six months ago she was found unresponsive in her home. a robbery victim was beaten and bloodied after three teen victims attacked him. james cooper says he saw three teens running away leaving the man on the ground, his face badly swollen and bleeding. he immediately started recording video with his cell phone. >> i seen him stretched out on the ground. i said let me help this guy out. hold on let me get you some help, man. looked like he got beat bad, kicks, punches. i wish i could have get there earlier to help him out. >> cooper called police who are still looking for the teens this morning. happening today, the ex-son-in-law of former pennsylvania governor tom corbett is scheduled to stand trial for a second time on theft charges. gerald gibson was a philadelphia police narcotics officer in 2013 when he was accused of taking money from a car. prosecutors say that money was planted as part of an internal affairs investigation. a judge declared a mistrial in the case last october. police will continue their search today for two sets of suspected wants in connection to two different robberies at cvs stores over the weekend. in burlington county, investigate ares say an armed suspect walked into the cvs store at neck road near bustleton road. no one inside the store was meantime we have a surveillance photo of two robbers who tied up employees at a delaware county cvs saturday night. police say the men shown here walked into the store on pennel road in ashton around closing time. the men forced two employees into a back room and tied them up. the employees were not injured. the robbers got away with cash. contact police if you have any information. police are looking for the cause of a motorcycle accident that killed the driver in montgomery county just after 3:00 yesterday afternoon. at horsham and norristown roads in horsham. no other cars were involved. 6:06. disturbing, that's how neighbors are describing the discovery of human remains in a vacant lot in philadelphia. a woman said she found the box of cremated remains near oakdale and 26th streets? the strawberry mansion section of the city saturday morning. the remains are those of linda upshore, 64 when she died in july of 2007. neighbors we talk with didn't recognize the woman's name. they are wondering why someone would leave the remains in a victim lot. >> why put it out like it's trash? that's not good. >> it's so unfortunate and very disrespectful for someone to dispose of anybody's remains in such a poor manner. >> nbc 10 reached out to police investigating the discovery. if you recognize the woman's name, linda upshore, you're asked to call police. police are looking for the person who slashed tires on more than a dozen cars in a philadelphia neighborhood. this happened along swanson street and queen street in queen village. 18 vehicles had one or more tires slashed but they aren't sure when the damage was done. pennsylvania governor tom wolf will be in willow grove today to promote schools and push his budget plan. wolf will visit willow hill elementary school as part of his ongoing schools that teach tour. the governor and state lawmakers have not been able to break a budget stalemate. wolf proposed a tax on the natural gas industry to fund a billion dollars for schools. republican lawmakers say the tax would hurt the state. meantime today in delaware governor jack markell welcomes young scientists and engineers to a conference at the university of delaware. the conference focuses on the state's coastal environment. the scientists and engineers will exchange ideas on projects and research to protect the coast. this morning, two phone companies are working to fix a 911 problem in berks county. the county's department of emergency services say that sprint wireless customers are hearing a squealing noise when calling 911. the dispatchers at the 911 call center hear the same noise, making communication impossible. both sprint and verizon are working on the problem. in bethlehem, northampton county, township commissioners want to fight flash flooding by taxing property owners. the move follows last month's storms which cost the township $250,000. the proposed fee would run between $25 and $150 a year and would be used to fund storm water drainage projects to help with that. township officials will meet next week to talk about the proposal. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> coming up on nine minutes after 6:00. some of those drains are being tested this morning. we've seen showers and thunderstorms with heavy downpours and downpours are possible again this afternoon. could wind up with localized flooding. storms today, heat and humidity. tomorrow, the beginning of what appears to be the most impressive heat wave of the season so far. with temperatures well into the 90s later this week. we're in the 70s right now and holing in the low 70s with clouds. light rain in the allentown area, clouds are breaking in northeast philadelphia for a little bit of sunshine. atlantic city has the rain at 70 degrees along with cape may. you see the camera is on the move. you can see the street is damp this morning. that's beach avenue. that has gotten some steady rain in the last hour and some thunderstorm activity not far away. the thundershowers really tapering off in allentown right now, upper bucks county seeing light rainfall. it's just light rainfall in philadelphia and into much of new jersey but right along the coast, including the delaware beaches, that's where the heavier showers and thunderstorms are moving through. they're just pushing offshore of cape may. atlantic city has thunder and lightning in the area and the possibility of more storms this afternoon. but it's not going to be as widespread as what we saw first thing this morning. 9:00, for example, mostly cloudy skies, a few spots on the radar. the hour by hour forecast shows scattered showers at noontime in south jersey and delaware. we'll get breaks of sunshine to warm into the 80s for the northern and western suburbs. then as we go into the afternoon, we're likely to see more showers and thunderstorms in chester and delaware county and into south jersey. at 3:00 in the afternoon, look at the evening commute. there will be storms in the area but not everyone will see them at the same time. seven-day forecast when i'm back with the heat wave that's coming. 6:10. heat wave? we're still dealing with the rain, especially on the roads around 95, right around the blue route. slow traffic moving by the scene. these are on the northbound lanes approaching the ramp to the blue route. so you can see this drive time right here from the blue route up towards the vine street expressway. still about a 14-minute trip. if you're headed around the philadelphia area 95 southbound from woodhaven road to the vine street expressway. almost a 20-minute trip. today the two women killed in the louisiana movie theater shooting will be laid to rest. meantime a clearer picture comes together about the gunman. >> obviously somebody with this kind of history never should have been able to buy a gun. now the issue of gun control coming back to the forefront. in three minutes, we'll take you live to lafayette, louisiana. a chester county because of this warehouse fire in central jersey are waking up at home. officials in north brunswick, middlesex county announced yesterday that residents could return to their homes. officials ordered them to leave when the fire broke out early wednesday. investigators have not yet found the cause of that fire. a chester county family thought their two dogs died in a fire over the weekend that torched their home. but the dogs were found alive a day after the flames were extinguish. this is the fire that destroyed the family's east fallowfield home. see the flames and the black smoke there. investigators say smoking sparked that fire. here are the dogs. the family escaped unharmed but the pets were nowhere to be found. firefighters found the dogs in a second floor bedroom on sunday. both dogs are doing well. funeral services are happening today for the two victims killed during a movie theater shooting in louisiana last week. mayci breaux and jillian johnson will both be laid to rest. meantime, the governor of louisiana says the gunman john houser, should have never been allowed to purchase a gun because of his history of mental illness. he legally purchased s show his family had him involuntary committed to a hospital in georgia. >> an individual ranting and raving within things within the government, around the world. >> it's still not clear why houser's hospitalization did not show up in the federal database. two people were killed nine others injured in the shooting before houser killed himself. this morning, a closer look at gun control with those new details surfacing about the shooter's troubled past. nbc's gabe gutierrez joins us live from lafayette, louisiana. good morning to you gabe. >> as you mentioned this community is shaken. two victims who dieded in that shooting will be laid to rest today. all as investigators are digging deeper into the past of the gunman, john "rusty" houser. houser was spotted at at least three other theaters in baton rouge rouge, lake charles and lafayette. he wrote down in a journal the exact date time and movie showing where he would carry out his rampage. as you mentioned, governor bobby jendle is now saying given the gunman's mental history he never have been able to buy that gun. in 2008 his family had him involuntary committed to a hospital in georgia. following the virginia tech massacre in 2007 many states strengthened their mental health reporting rirpts. now 40 states either authorize or require local officials to report to the federal government, to include in their database for federal background checks mental health records. it's not clear why those mental health records did not turn up in the database when houser bought his gun in alabama. that is something investigators are looking into. so far, atf investigators say that this gun was purchased legally in alabama. but, again, this community, today will mourn those two victims who were taken much too soon. back to problems or increase in that drive time yet. we're close to it. out in new jersey right on route 73 around 295 if you're headed northbound or southbound you can see roadways just a tad damp. still moving along there as well. if you're headed westbound, currently no problems just take your time on the schuylkill expressway. a little bit slippery out there. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> just about 20 minutes after 6:00. we're starting to see breaks in the clouds. the showers tapering off quickly in philadelphia. and the clouds will continue to thin out. we will get some sunshine but you may not be done with your umbrella today. philadelphia international, they'll update that and the rain will have ended in south philadelphia. a chance of more storms during the day. the chance will be in theocono mountains. mostly cloudy view over lake wallenpaupack. the storms roll through the mountains. now they are on to the jersey shore and southern delaware heavy downpours moving through rehoboth and lewis right now, cape may is seeing the heavier rainfall move offshore. the showers and thunderstorms will repeat this afternoon for some areas but it shouldn't be the widespread rainfall we had first thing this morning. but that being said with mostly cloudy skies and thunderstorms, we could still see heavy downpours this afternoon. 80s today, the clouds keep things cooler today but not tomorrow. into the 90s. 91 degrees, hot ws humid conditions. that's the beginning of much hotter weather. look at wednesday and thursday into the middle 90s with late-day storms on thursday. less humid friday but still plenty hot into the 90s for friday, saturday and sunday. >> 20 minutes past 6:00 right now. 35 separate voices but they all have one thing thunderstorm activity, it's a line of storms that move through the city now at the jersey shore and in delaware as well. the heavier rainfall is clearing atlantic city. we're following breaking news from overnight in philadelphia's juneiata neighborhood, a hit and run leaves one person dead and one in the hospital. jesse gary is live with a new piece of evidence police hope will help them catch the driver. >> reporter: that's the suv that sped away from the scene. we'll talk about that and an update on the condition of the surviving person coming up right after the break. a mother and daughter are stabbed in west oak lane. less than 24 hours later, the suspect was arrested. but he wasn't caught in philadelphia. we'll get the latest developments in this case. nbc 10 breaking news. just about 6:30 and breaking news from overnight one person is dead another hurt after a hit and run in philadelphia's juniata neighborhood. now the search is on for the driver but police could catch a break thanks to a key piece of evidence that was found overnight. wet roads are slowing traffic this morning. we'll take a live look at the roads there. and let's take a look at the first alert be moving offshore. it's the gray we'll have to deal with for most of the day today. the skies are cloudy at this time and the rain has tapered off in philadelphia. but it has moved on with some heavy rainfall for southern delaware and into south jersey though the heavier rainfall is now clearing cape may. there's a chance wul you'll see downpours again this afternoon as thunderstorms redevelop. before then we'll get breaks of sunshine. that's going to lead to a pretty good warmup, 76 degrees at 8:00. a chance of showers, thunderstorms will take a break from most areas by 8:00. by 11:00 we could see spotty showers, 80 degrees and 82 degrees at 2:00 this afternoon. as we go into the afternoon hours that's when we're more likely to see round two of showers and thunderstorms. we'll go we are starting to see increased volume all over the place. 95 right around the blue route. you can still see we're watching this disabled vehicle. he's blocking out this right-hand shoulder right here. this is headed towards off of 95 northbound headed towards the ramp for the blue route so you can see the volume moving past the scene. northbound from the blue route up towards the vine street expressway we're still seeing a 14-minute drive time not slowing up too much there. heading into philadelphia, 95 southbound from woodhaven road up towards the vine street expressway, 26-minute trip already. schuylkill expressway starting to slow down on the east and westbound side. you'll see delays there. the blue route is doing okay for the big stretch between the schuylkill and 95. if you're heading out the dow are, there is a fallen tree on mlk drive that's closed now between falls bridge road and strawberry mention drive. take kelly drive or follow the posted detours. tracy? 71 degrees outside. we're following this breaking news. philadelphia police are much searching for the driver suspected of a deadly hit and run crash in junephiladelphia's juniata neighborhood. jesse gary is there live. >> i'm told that the passenger who was in the car that was hit still in temple university hospital. he was in critical condition. he's been upgraded to stable condition. also investigators found the suv that fled from the scene. they found that over at north 9th and rising sun. they'll bring it over here look inside try to get fingerprint and dna evidence. hopefully that will bring them to the person who was behind the wheel at the very least they can find out who owns the car. this accident happened around 10:30 last night in juniata. the impact of the crash, heavy damage to the driver's side of this dark blue four-door mazda. the driver was killed. as i mentioned, the passenger was injured but upgraded to stable at temple university hospital. the driver of the suv sped off from the scene. police are looking for that person right now. if you happened to have witnessed this crash or saw a dark-colored suv speeding through juniata last night, call the philadelphia police accident investigations division. this morning a philadelphia man has to face charges for allegely stabbing his wife and their 1-year-old daughter. police arrested stephen burton in maryland last night. a neighbor told nbc 10 she heard danecia burton screaming inside her house on dallas street in west oak lane early yesterday morning. the neighbor rushed over to see what was wrong. that's when she said she saw stephen burton attacking his wife. >> she let me in. she was leaning against the wall with her arm sliced up. all i could do was find paper towel to stop the bleeding. she told me go check our daughter because he stabbed her, too. when i went upstairs the baby was laying in all her blood. >> danecia burton suffered several stab wounds and he also stabbed their 1-year-old daughter desiree, in the stomach. the boy scouts of america is expected to make history by lifting the ban on gay leaders. the new polywould allow scouting groups to select adult leaders, no matter their sexual orientation. some grou would be able to limit leadership jobs to heterosexual heterosexuals. a philadelphia neighborhood stricken by poverty gets its up close with a debut of a documentary. >> i'm jamal and i'm 16. i'm headed in the right direction. >> a community group that mentors young people will screen stories from the promised zone at city hall this afternoon. the film is a snapshot of life in mantua. in 2013 president obama tapped the section of the city to receive federal revitalization dollars. we asked interviewers from the documentary if people there thought progress is being made. >> i think it's headed into the right direction. they're making new buildings. it looks nice. things are getting better. >> teenagers created the documentary. mayor michael nutter plans to comment after the screening. traffic alert in center city. for at least the next week starting today, penndot is closing the spring garden street ramp to the schuylkill expressway westbound. road crews will be working from 9:00 till 3:00. the ramp will be closed until next tuesday while repairs are made to the concrete. drivers can use girard avenue avenue ramp to the schuylkill. now your first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> the temperatures stuck in the low 70s in philadelphia. thunderstorms are moving out with a threat of more heavy downpours this afternoon as the temperatures climb into the 80s. 80s today held back by the rain and the clouds. tomorrow it's a heat wave the beginning of a heat wave. we'll be in the 90s tomorrow afternoon. 72 right now in allentown, seeing the clouds thin out in allentown and northeast philadelphia while the rain is still falling in atlantic city. you can see some brightening of the skies. this live view from the comcast center. the rain has ended for now in philadelphia. just a few isolated showers in upper bucks county. rain is light now after some heavy downpours in gloucester and camden counties. steady rain for central and southern burlington county. the heavier storms thunderstorm activity now southern delaware and moving offshore. cape may is seeing light rainfall and moderate rain showers in the atlantic city area. you can see lightning strikes just offshore. wasn't a huge lightning storm or show this morning and it won't be a hugely wet morning as we go through the day. lots of clouds and a couple scattered showers. that's at 10:00 this morning. but as we go into thia of noon we'll see breaks in the clouds. that will heat things up and that will likely lead to late-day showers and thunderstorms. it's 3:00 this afternoon. you can see northeastern maryland getting them at that hour and they will be popping up in delaware and south jersey at 5:00. not everybody's going to see those storms later today. clouds and breaks of sunshine mostly cloudy. occasional showers and thunderstorms possible from midday on. and then 80s for today. this weekend though the temperatures will street expressway towards the blue route. 16 minutes headed eastbound into the center city area. pretty much we don't win in either direction as of right now. we also are watching mlk drive closed between falls bridge road and strawberry mansion drive due to a fallen tree blocking the area. they have local detours posted. take kelly drive to get through the area. also an accident scene, towamencin valley forge road and morris road. two 14-year-old boys disappear while on a fishing trip and days later, the case is still considered an active search and rescue. hall of fame nfl player are on the cover of the latest "new york" magazine. it features individual stories along with a portfolio of pictures and group photos. the woman behind the speed, noreen malone says her work illustrates the scale and diversity of the abuse accusers say cosby inflicted upon them. an artist who lost his tools to thieves says help is coming in to replace what was taken. someone stole brian ackley's chain saws from his shed. he uses his ten chain saws to make art carvings in trees damaged by storms. since the theft, a local farm store gave him two chain saws on credit and other people have come up with donations. >> i don't even know this guy and he's offering me a chain saw. this is good stuff. >> the outpouring of concern from the community has been very humbling. >> we're checking with police to see if they made any arrests so far in the case. 6:44. funeral services will be held today for a u.s. marine sergeant killed during that attack at a military center in tennessee earlier this month. sergeant thomas sullivan will be laid to rest one of five service members killed by a lone gunman who later was gunned down by authorities. following today's private funeral, sullivan will be laid to rest with fuel military honors at the massachusetts veterans memorial cemetery. now to decision 2016 and donald trump's comments which some find controversial could be helping him in the polls. a new nbc news/maris poll shows trump leading the republican presidential field in the early primary state of new hampshire. right now 21% of potential gop voters are favoring trump, followed by jeb bush scott walker and john kasich. new jersey governor chris christie is tied in fifth place. in another nbc news/maris poll, this one in iowa trump comes in second behind walker. trump made headlines with his remarks on several issues, including immigration and john mccain's war hero status. 16 republicans are seeking their party's presidential nomination. on the democratic side 5 candidates are running for the white house there. front-runner hillary clinton campaigned in iowa this weekend, answering questions about her use of a private e-mail server while serving as secretary of state. >> -- very few issues about the 55,000 pages we're talking about, just 4 or fewer. >> late last week two inspectors general asked the justice department to investigate. fiat chrysler must offer to buy back more than 500,000 ram pickup trucks pat of a deal with federal safety regulators to settle legal problems in two dozen recalls. the trucks have defective steering parts that can cause drivers to lose control. some previous repairs have been unsuccessful. to get them off the roads, fiat chrysler agreed to the buy back. owners also have the option of getting them fixed. >> this morning, an nfl hall of famer is offering big money to help find two 14-year-old boys missing in the atlantic ocean. the coast guard found the teen's boat capsized nearly 70 miles off coast guard is modifying their search based on the boat's location. four firefighters in california are recovering from injuries they suffered fighting a wildfire that has scorched 1,500 acres. this is what crews near sacramento have been dealing with for days now. according to a fire spokesperson it's unclear what the crew members were doing when they got burn. firefighters say the fire is particularly hard to fight because of drought conditions and rough terrain. in milwaukee, wisconsin, police are continuing their big game hunt for lion on the loose. the city's been on alert ever since cell phone video of the animal surfaced last week. over the weekend people at a cookout say they spotted the lion and it wasn't alone. >> first there was one, then a baby came out. i was scared. >> the milwaukee zoo says all of its lions are present and accounted for. police say they last spotted the big cat early sunday morning. chris cato live in our breaking news center here. we are strides. his visit also comes at a time when we're working hard and improving governance and fighting insecurity conflicts anv terrorism. his visit could not have come at a better time. as the leader of the most powerful nation politically -- >> we're hearing from the ethiopian prime minister there. president obama beside him at the podium is addressing the african union, a historic visit, the first time a sitting u.s. president has visited ethiopia. talking to the african union about several issues among them human rights. he's expected to discuss what is considered by many to be eroding democratic freedoms in ethiopia and other african nations. he's also going to discuss the civil war in south sudan, something the african union has been battling for 19 months, talking about possible sanctions for leaders in africa who do not impose tough penalties on warlords there in south sudan, trying to bring an end to that fighting. we will listen in on the president's remarks when he starts speaking in a moment and bring you developing moments. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> ten minutes before the "today" show starts and we're seeing some sunshine break through the clouds. it's a mostly cloudy view, though, of center city. 72 degrees. the temperature is just starting to climb a little bit. the rain has tapered off in philadelphia. still tracking showers, though. cape may seeing light rain. the hef everstorms have moved offshore. there is a chance you'll see more showers during the day but not everybody is going to see the widespread rainfall and thunderstorms that we had roll through overnight. already drying out in philadelphia, the heavy rainfall at the shore has tapered off. it's moved offshore. see thunderstorms east of atlantic city. there is another area of thunderstorm activity, moving through maryland. this is heading to the southeast at 20 miles an hour and this storm looks like it's going to hold together and be affecting portions of kent county southern kent county. greensboro could see it just after 7:00 this morning and by 7:16, edwardsville could see the storms rolling through. be on the lookout for more storms during the day. it's not going to be the widespread rainfall that we saw first thing this morning. mostly cloudy skies, a chance of afternoon storms. those storms could bring heavy downpours. the clouds and storms will combine to keep temperatures lower today. but not tomorrow. we're into the 90s. this is the beginning of an extended heat wave possibly the most impressive one of the season so far. 91 on tuesday. look at the heat and humidity for wednesday and thursday especially steamy thursday. that will fuel storms later in the day. humidity drops on friday. it's still going to be hot friday and this weekend, too, 94 saturday, up to 93 with steamy conditions sunday. >> all right, bill nine minutes before 7:00 right now. eight minutes before 7:00. let's get you out the door you know you have rain and low visibility heavy downpours as well depending where you are. >> we're beginning to see slowdowns all across the board. 95 and the schuylkill being hit first. 95 that's blocking mlk drive right between falls bridge road and strawberry mansion drive. local detours are posted. if you want to avoid it altogether take kelly drive to get through. out in kintnersville in bucks county a downed tree there. easton road southbound between lehnenberg road and route 32. take 611 or durham road to get through that area. otherwise, the schuylkill expressway, this is where we're starting to see slowdowns through the conshohocken curve. roadways still wet as well. 20 minutes if you're headed east or westbound from the blue route up towards the vine street expressway. vai? >> we're following breaking news from overnight. a hit and run leaves one person dead, another in the hospital. jesse gary is live at the police accident investigation division with the latest. >> reporter: we have an update on the condition of that person who's been left hospitalized as well as the fact the police have been able to find the vehicle that hit the car. we'll talk about all this coming up after the break. รณ chris cato live in our breaking news center with breaking developments in the death of bobbi kristina who passed away yesterday. the medical examiner's office in fulton county georgia saying it will order an autopsy. it will conduct an autopsy to try to determine what led to her death. again, she died yesterday at the age of 22 almost six months after being found unresponsive in a bathtub at her home in suburban atlanta. police report at the time described it as a drowning. police are conducting a separate investigation. the medical examiner this morning saying that interpreting any autopsy findings could be difficult and challenging because of the amount of time that has passed since she slipped into that coma and yesterday when she died. no word yet on how long they expect the autopsy to take when it will be con ducked or when they expect to have any results. definitely an investigation moving forward in fulton county georgia in and run. the crash happened around 10 o 30 last night near luzerne streets in juniata. investigators found the suv about an hour after the crash here in north philadelphia but still, searching for the
