crash killed a philadelphia mother and her three children. it also left an emotional car in the tioga neighborhood where the accident happened. jesse gary has the latest. no doubt a lot of folks remember this tragedy. >> reporter: it's hard to forget. actually, you never forget something like this. starting at noon today and lasting until 6:00 in the evening, the community is going to come together here to remember and heal after the heart ache. you can see where they've put teddy bears and flowers around that tree that's going to be replaced with food and prayers here in the spot where a year ago there were tears and a lot of disbelief. one year ago keisha williams and her kids sold fruit on the corner. they were hit after cornelius crawford and jonathan rosa carjacked a woman, lost control, and crashed running over the four. keisha williams died days later due to her injuries. the family described why they want the memorial cookout here at the place of the accident. >> they used to work around here in the gardens. it was always a happy place. they used to sell fruit out here at the stand. they want kids to know every time they come down here it's not a sad occasion. >> reporter: two other women including the carjacked woman were injured. if you plan on coming out here parking is limited out on the street. but you can takes septa the number 23 and 60 buses. both stop on the corner of germantown and allegheny. jesse gary, nbc 10 news. at 6:03 we take a live look at camden. crews will begin demolishing the commerce building at broadway and federal street. the building was a beacon of progress when it opened in 1965. crews are clearing it to make way for a parking lot. the demolition should take about two weeks. traffic will be rerouted around the area. this morning an owner of a popular philadelphia restaurant is facing child pornography charges. alex capasso co-owns crow and the pitcher at rittenhouse square. he was arrested on monday. the fbi says an undercover sting caught capasso providing nude pictures of a 5-year-old girl and discussing plans to sexual abuse his own soon to be born daughter. his coworkers told us they will try to move on from all of this. >> right now i just have to think about the restaurant and the people that work here. you know i got to make sure i'm there for them. >> we have learned capasso had at -- has at least one other child, but that boy apparently did not live with his father. philadelphia police is a monster is now off the streets. an ex-handyman with a history of violence is charged with the murder of a recent drexel university grad student. investigators say james harris broke into jasmine wright's apartment a little more than a week ago and waited for her. he may have kept keys to her apartment after he was fired as the building's handyman. when she walked in her apartment, he allegedly attacked her from behind then beat sexually assaulted, and strangled her. wright's mother was on the phone with her daughter when she heard them struggle. >> she was a very nice young lady. went to grad school. was just about to make her ma rk in this life. and to be killed in this fashion is sad and tragic. >> police say harris is career criminal with 30 prior arrests dating back to the 1970s. he killed his own father in 1982 and served out his sentence. right now he's behind bars being held in lieu of $5 million bail. two children are with the philadelphia department of human services this morning after police say they were left home alone. but the family says it was all a mixup. officers say they found a 3-year-old boy walking on the 2200 block of north 16th street in philadelphia yesterday. they say he had a burn on his foot. when police went to the child's home they say they found an 11-year-old girl home alone as well as deplorable conditions. the kids' aunt says the parents had gone out for 10 to 15 minutes to get lunch and the bruise is a birthmark. she blames the landlord for the home's condition. >> plumbing problems ceiling falling in doors coming off hinges. people who used to live there comes in kicks the door in. >> police are still sorting everything we are getting a first glimpse at never before seen images of the george w. bush white house reacting to the 9/11 terror attacks. former vice president dick cheney's photographer snapped the pictures. this photo shows bush cheney and their team inside the emergency operation center underneath the white house. this one shows cheney and his wife lynn aboard the plane traveling to camp david. and this shows cheney watching reports of the attacks in his office. they were released in response to a freedom of information request. happening today, funeral services are scheduled in chicago for sandra bland, the african-american woman who died in a texas jail cell after a confrontation with a white police officer. yesterday authorities released the autopsy report for bland. it says she committed suicide by hanging. investigators are still waiting on toxicology results. but bland's family is questioning that autopsy report and criticizing the traffic stop that led to her being in jail. the officer stopped her for failing to signal a lane change earlier this month. she was arrested after the cop says she assaulted him. bland was found dead in her cell three days later. up next the not so friendly skies. why some of the biggest airlines in america are under investigation for tickets sold of the deadly amtrak derailment. and stop the presses, literally. the reason donald trump has a big problem with one small city newspaper. gun safety advocates will rally at a cinema in harrisburg following the deadly movie theater shooting in lafayette, louisiana. the group moms demand action for gun safety in america calls on congress to do something to stem violence at the movies and elsewhere. last night college students in lafayette hosted a candlelight vigil in the wake of the shooting. organizers wanted to keep the vigil small to show respect for the victims' families. meantime authorities continue to search for answers after a gunman killed two people and wounded nine others in the theater attack. the shooter john russell houser took his own life. they say he had a history of violent behavior and mental illness. and the grisly scene inside the theater in lafayette rattled even veteran police officers. >>. >> that was a horrific scene in there fop see where the projectiles were. to see the blood on the floor, to smell it. >> the shooter actually took his time and was somewhat methodical as he shot folks from the top, from the back of the theater. >> police looking for a motive are reviewing journals and online blogs houser posted prior to the attack. the theater will remain closed at least through the weekend. it's about 6:16 now. federal authorities are investigating five airlines for possible price gouging following the amtrak derailment in philadelphia. the u.s. department of transportation sent letters to american, delta, jetblue, southwest, and united airlines requesting their prices before and after the crash in may. the airlines deny raising prices after amtrak's derailment. amtrak shut down travel between philadelphia and new york for five days earlier this month. the justice department also said it is investigating possible collusion between airlines to limit available seats which kept airfares high. ntsb investigators say technology could have prevented the crash. positive train control automatically slows a train meauxing too fast. it's supposed to be installed nationwide by the oend the year but a transportation bill extends the deadline. bob casey wants to stop the delay. we checked with amtrak and septa in the northeast corridor and both say they are prepared to meet the deadline. >> i think that's a step in the wrong direction. i think we should maintain the current deadline which would be the end of this year. >> supporters of the delay say the demand of installing the technology is too time consuming and costly. meantime governor christie blasted amtrak and new jersey transit for days after delays for commuters. christie criticized amtrak for the power problems that caused delays for four days this week. amtrak own this track and equipment used by new jersey transit between new jersey and new york. the governor wants congress to get involved to make sure the money new jersey transit pays amtrak is used properly. new jersey transit forks over $100 million a year to use the rail lines. happening now, president obama is in kenya as part of an africa trip focused on deepening economic and security partnerships. the president arrived there yesterday and met with relatives of his father in kenya. today he is co-hosting a business summit and will meet with kenya's president. tomorrow he will address the people before leaving for ethiopia. decision 2016 now and "the apprentice" is off nbc, but it appears donald trump is still trying to do the firing. "the des moines register" said trump denied press credentials to its reporters for a campaign event later today. on tuesday the newspaper published an editorial calling on trump to end his run for the white house. the billionaire businessman called "the register" a failing newspaper that's been dishonest in covering his campaign. we have new information on the hillary clinton e-mail probe. but really bumping up the temperatures during the week into the upper 90s. >> thank you. 6:31 now. new overnight, a man stabbed in philadelphia is in critical condition. nbc 10 was on the street near erie in tioga. the stabbing happened around 1:30 this morning. the victim was wounded in the abdomen. police are investigating. exactly one year ago today three young lives were lost in a violent crash. the children died on a philadelphia street after a carjacking ended in a collision. their mother died just days later. the events of july 25th, 2014, are sered into the minds of those at the crash scene. jesse gary residents there are trying to move beyond the tragedy. >> reporter: and they're going to try to use a cookout to do that. they're going to have a memorial cookout here at the scene of the crash. i can show you a bit more. it was a chain link fence right about here ten foot by ten foot, that had teddy bears and flowers and candles all on it. and now it's been replaced by this new wooden fence. it's got a message on it. has the image os they have victims. it says love is timeless. it's the memory of yesterday. then it wraps its way around. it says happiness of today and the promise of tomorrow. it goes all the way around the corner. we talked to the family -- hold on. let me let this ambulance pass. starting at noon we're going to have the memorial cookout here. it's going to last to 6:00 in the evening. we asked the family why they wanted to i guess, kind of do it here at the site where there was so much pain and anguish just a year ago. >> the family is really going through a lot. they're going through a whole lot. the children every time they come down people have visuals. it's always a sad occasion. we wanted to make it something different where e the kids could come and remember. because they used to work around here in the gardens. it was always a happy place. >> they want to try to make it a happy place once again keisha williams and her three kids were struck and killed. two others were injured. the criminals are awaiting trial in the case charged with murder and other crimes. if you plan on coming out here today, limited street philadelphia will be closed today for repairs and maintenance. you won't be able to drive on the road from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. between ridge avenue. lincoln drive will also be closed to walkers, joggers, and bikers. there are also street closures in center city today. latimer street 16th street will be repaved. the other streets will also be closed because of crane operations and construction northern kentucky airport topped the list with an average airfare of $199. we have new pictures of pluto from the horizons spacecraft hovers close to the small planet's surface. here's the latest lock at the dwarf planet. on july 14th the picture snapping spacecraft got up close and personal getting within 7800 miles of the surface. they show it in perplexing detail. this image shows what nasa it's been around for over a century. but with that comes a lot of costs. so the coast guard is opening it up for general auction. >> when you come in you'll see the coast guard equipment still on site. we're going to work our way upstairs to the main living quarters. beautiful natural wood everywhere. this is one of the bedrooms. >> i've always been drawn to lighthouses. i think it's a neat hifg opportunity to restore it and back to its original state. >> as you can see, it needs tender loving care. it's not been occupied since 1975. >> the new owner would be maintaining the facility. the coast guard will maintain the operation nap aspects of it. >> two bedrooms and an office on this floor. >> definitely a lot of work but there's potential. >> people can use it for their second home. they can create a bed and breakfast as many people do. >> i think it's certainly a unique destination where you could spend one or two days with some friends. but there's no land around it.
