live around girard avenue. so we are losing out that right-hand shoulder on the eastbound side. there's a little bit of equipment in the area. not an active work zone but something to watch out for. headed eastbound right in here a 12-minute drive time. from the blue route up towards the vine street expressway, no real problems there. we'll head over to new jersey now. we are seeing just a tad more volume than normal. and a little bit earlier than we normally do, possibly some folks heading home from the shore. so northbound from 55 up towards the walt whitman bridge still seeing an easy drive time. 61 miles per hour are the average speeds headed toward the walt whitman bridge. no problems for the walt and the tacony palmyra. as for the ben, we're still dealing with the ongoing construction where two right-hand lanes are blocked heading westbound into philadelphia. vai? >> thank you very much. you just heard it right from brittney shipp. get ready for the heat. it's 6:00 a.m. and it feels like a sauna out there. >> vai it is getting warmer and warmer as the day goes on. we get sunlight. it's hazy out here in center city. you can see the skyline of philadelphia right behind me out here. we see a few of those runners those early morning joggers trying to come up the art museum steps. they are very few and far between at this hour. the kind of heat that we're experiencing right now could certainly be dangerous later on today for the more vulnerable groups, the elderly, disabled just looking at the peco building here in center city you can see it's in the low 80s at this point. but some of the people that we've been talking with say they are trying to deal with the heat the best they can. some will tell us they're starting to look forward to winter at this point. and all the snow that we're going to end up getting. definitely people who are really wishing away this kind of weather. it's a good idea to bring extra water with you as you head out the door this morning. some of the fol^ç of course do have to work in this kind of heat especially construction workers but you do need to be extra careful. wear light-colored clothing as well. try to stay indoors and in the air conditioning as much as possible. i've been outside of our live truck only for a few minutes and you really start to feel it on your skin. it is warm. it is muggy, even at on hadfield street in kingsessing. which brings the total number of victims shot overnight to eight. jesse gary is live at police headquarters. jesse, you have new information about another case right? tell us about that. >> within the last hour family members of a 21-year-old that was murdered overnight arrived here at philadelphia police headquarters. this is new video of those family members as they headed in to talk to homicide detectives and provide new information that could help catch the shooter. they identify the only person killed in a spate of violence overnight. he was shot three times in the face in the feltonville section of the city. dozens of people called 911. his father chased after the shooter who fired at least three more times at the pursuing dad but missed him. investigators say several spent shell casings were found at the scene. there's more potential evidence that could lead to the shooter's capture. >> fortunately in the area we found several businesses with cameras. so hopefully these cameras roared something that can help us with our investigation. >> the suspect is wearing all black clothing. he jumped in a black toyota and sped away from 4th street headed south, if anybody has seen that vehicle or knows anything about the shooting you're asked to call philadelphia homicide detectives. live outside police headquarters jesse gary nbc 10 news. 54 years, that's how long it's been since the u.s. and cuba had embassies open in each other's capital. >> all that changes with both nations taking the next step in normalizing relations this is new video from the state department in washington. this morning workers added the cuban flag to the array of international banners. now take a look at the building in havana which will officially re-open as the american embassy there. the u.s. flag won't fly there until secretary of state john kerry visit later this summer. the cuban flag will be hoisted at the island's embassy in washington. president obama announced last december the u.s. would be interacting again with cuba. improving relations between the u.s. and cuba could mean extradition talks involving fugitives like joanne chesimard. a jury convicted her of murdering a new jersey state trooper during a traffic stop in 1973. she broke out of prison years later and fled to cuba where she was granted political asylum. happening today, we expect to learn if a fire that forced evacuation of an entire block in south philadelphia yesterday is a case of arson. the fire broke out early yesterday in an apartment and retail site under construction on jup per street near snyder. a witness told police before the fire started he saw two men near the building. he said one of them went into the building and then came running out just minutes before an explosion. and today the lehigh county mother charged with killing her toddler after he was thrown off a bridge is due in court. police arrested 19-year-old perry back in may. investigators say she slewer this 20-month-old son off the hamilton street bridge and jumped in herself. rescue crews saved perry but could not revive her son. a judge set up a court hearing tomorrow for the heavy equipment operator charged in connection with the deadly market street collapse. shawn benschop could be spared a life sentence if he pleads guilty. prosecutors say benschop was under the influence of marijuana and prescription pain killers while operating an excavateor at the time of the collapse. six people died more than a dozen others hurt. benschop is charged with third degree murder along with demolition contractor griffin campbell. now your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist brittney shipp. >> good morning. temperatures starting off on the warm side. it's already muggy and sticky out there. 81 degrees in philadelphia 81 in northeast philly. those are the warmest spots on the map. we're at 80 degrees in mt. holly, 79 in wildwood. temperatures in reading at 74 degrees, mid-70s to start in allentown. that's actually a brisk start to the morning in the poconos with temperatures at 69 degrees. your city planner shows as you go throughout today, by the time you head out for lunch we'll be in the 90s. the feels-like temperature for both of these times, closer to the high 90s, even the triple digits, especially as we head into the afternoon. that's why the entire area is under an excessive heat warning or heat advisory. dangerous heat is expected at least until 8:00 p.m. tonight. be careful throughout today. what these alerts mean everyone is susceptible to heat-related illnesses, especially if you're not hydrating properly. our heat index is between 100 and 105 degrees. the humidity is in the oppressive levels, close to 70 degrees with the dew point. it feels really uncomfortable out, especially as we head into the afternoon. our heat tips are drink plenty of water stay in the air conditioning, try to seek out shade. check on your pets the kids and the elderly. the actual temperatures range between 94 and 97. that's 10 degrees above average. the wind direction shifts out of the west 5 to 10 miles per hour. that's going to help us get some crisper air moving in here. the radar shot shows isolated showers throughout the region. another chance for these isolated showers tonight and once again water. be careful. three swimmers have drown in two days in the delaware river. the popular swimming spot burlington city officials want people to stay out of. searching for answers, the fbi and texas rangers are investigating the death of a woman in a texas jail. per family is con ducking their own investigation into their quest to find out what happened to sandra bland. iran keeps their nuclear facilities. military sites can go uninspected. restrictions end after 10 years. then iran could build a nuclear weapon in two months. iran has violated 20 international agreements and is the leading at td bank. 6:14. we're following breaking news just in to the nbc 10 newsroom. >> skyforce 10 our chopper is again over the scene of yet another shooting that occurred in philadelphia overnight. this in the kingsessing neighborhood on hadfield street. this happened about 2 1/2 hours ago. this was the most recent where a 19-year-old man was shot in this case. no idea yet what led up to the shooting. the young man, the 19-year-old, is in stable condition. no arrests at this time. this has been an extremely violent night and early morning in philadelphia. we have counted at this point, six separate shootings in neighborhoods spanning from kingsessing to olney, frankford, and feltonville. a 21-year-old man was shot in the face and killed. one fatality seven other victims of shootings overnight in philadelphia. the big headline we're following, no arrests in any of these shootings. police have a lot of work cut out for them. we're following it here from our breaking news center chris cato live from our breaking news center. 6:15. there's a local push for justice this morning surrounding the illinois woman found hanging in a jail cell last week. nbc 10 was at mother bethel african methodist episcopal church in society hill yesterday. sandra bland was found hanging three days after a traffic stop turned into a confrontation. she was argumentative, uncooperative and charged with assault, police say. a family attorney said he's seen dashcam video. he wants to know why bland was even asked to get out of her car. >> he asked her to put out a cigarette. she said why do i have to put out a cigarette when i'm in my own car? that seemed to irritate him to the point where he said, get out of the car. >> this is cell phone video. a state trooper who stopped bland is now on administrative leave. bland's family has ordered an independent autopsy to see how she died. they insist she did not hang herself. investigators into nevada are looking into what caused a small plane to crash yesterday, just three miles into its journey. the four-seater landed in a desert 15 miles outside of las vegas. one of the victims with currently in critical conditions. no one on the ground was hurt. and we have new video this morning showing an arson suspect lighting an lgbt mural on fire in san francisco. surveillance video shows the man approaching the building before dousing a portion of it with what appears to be lighter fluid. within seconds, the mural was on fire. police are hoping this surveillance video will lead to an arrest. 6:17. you'll be grateful for the air today. our feels-like temperatures will push into the triple digits for most of our area. i'm tracking a slight chance of storms heading into tomorrow night and relief is on the way. for philadelphia right now, 81 degrees, the feels-like temperature at 87. when you step outside it's warm and muggy and sticky. wind speeds out of the southwest at 7 miles per hour. humidity is up to 85%, the dew point is up to 70 degrees and throughout the rest of the region it's actually on the mild side in the poconos. that's really the only exception. we're at 75 degrees in allentown. closer to the shore already in the low 80s this morning. 78 in glassboro, 80 degrees in wilmington and our feels-like temperature for philadelphia at 87, mid-80s for wilmington, 86 is the feels-like temperature in dover. so because we're even starting off that warm at this time of the morning, by the time we get into the afternoon, the sun comes up and we continue with the southwesterly wind direction. we'll keep seeing the humid air moving in the hot temperatures will be around once again today. that's why we have the weather alerts dangerous heat expected until tonight. we have a heat index anywhere between 100 and 105 degrees and air quality alert for your monday. if you suffer from respiratory illnesses, today is probably not the day to go for a long run outside. closer look at the radar shot shows us a few isolated showers before it gets to our region. a better chance as we head into tuesday evening for isolated thunderstorms, especially for south jersey and right along the shore. by wednesday, we start to see lower humidity levels our temperatures drop back down with the cold front that's going to usher in cooler air. highs around the region today will push into the mid-90s for philadelphia and then our feels-like temperature in the triple digits. we could see a heat wave. today, mid-90s and tomorrow low 90s. but take a look at that seven-day forecast temperatures expected to drop back we see this car, maybe an suv flipped over on to its roof there on the sidewalk. a lot of damage there. this is at the intersection of south black horse pike and east browning road. you can pull out and see the entire intersection. maybe there's another vehicle there that looks like it might have been involved in some way. what appears to be a van with a lot of front-end damage there. no word yet on injuries. but it does appear to have been an impact, a high-impact collision. this, again, is the intersection of south black horse pike east browning road. nbc 10's traffic reporter jessica good morning. our feels-like temperature just like you were mentioning close to 09 degrees already. so that is an uncomfortable and muggy start to the morning. our feels-like temperature in wilmington at 85 same thing in northeast philly and mt. holly, atlantic city airport at 87. that's the feels-like temperature. areas not as affected include the poconos stretching down into the lehigh valley where we're seeing temperatures at 75 degrees. that's the actual temperature in allentown. not much of an increase there even when you factor in the humidity. our actual temperature in philadelphia is 82. actual temperature in wilmington is 80 degrees and similar conditions right along the shore. as we head into the rest of the afternoon, our feels-like temperature will push into the triple digits and most of the region is under either an excessive heat warning in the pink or heat advisory in the orange and basically what both of those things means is that we are going to see dangerous heat. by dangerous it means you could fall susceptible to heat-related illnesses. drink plenty of water. the wakeup temperatures as we go into the late morning hours, shows the temperatures will push into the low 90s by the time you head out for lunch, it will be a hot lunch time. maybe stay inside. as we head into your 4:00 hour temperatures will push into the mid-90s for if low 90s in reading. i am tracking it into all this heat and humidity. i'll go over all the details in my extended forecast. that's coming up in about ten minutes. for now, we check in with first alert traffic reporter jessica boyington for a closer look. looks like you're monitoring a situation. tell us more about it. >> we're starting things off first in belmar new jersey where we do have an accident scene. skyforce 10 over top of the scene as this car is flipped over in belmar. that's on the black horse pike around east browning road. you can see all roadways really tied up at the moment right now. police activity on the scene. a car actually flipped over. we head over to the maps here i can tell you how to get around that. that's to take 259. if you want to jump on a 2 highway, 295 is looking okay. the white horse pike will get you through the area as well. we're starting to see jams. the 27-minute drive time, that's typically a 13-minute trip. up ahead, we do have an accident scene on the right-hand shoulder. outen the 422 out in montgomery county, eastbound from 29 up towards the schuylkill expressway about an eight-minute trip. we'll check in with more drive times and those accident scenes in belmar coming up. >> 6:32. as we just heard, we're in for a second straight day of dangerous heat. matt delucia is live in center city with what you need to know as we begin another sweltering day. matt? >> tracy, it is a little dangerous later on today for sure. at least it should be because of the temperatures. it's already warm and sticky out here right now at the art museum. you can see some of the folks are getting in the workout regardless out here. a lot fewer people than we would normally see on a day like this. i took a look over at the peco building that displays the temperature every now and then, 81 degrees. normally that wouldn't be too bad but you factor in the humidity, it's not a good situation, very soupy out here right now. you see the people working out. i spoke to a couple of them within the last 30 minutes, they tell me if they didn't get this workout in right now, they wouldn't be coming out later on. >> it's really hot. >> how are you getting through it? >> running through it. 5:30 i figured it wouldn't be so hot. it's pretty hot. >> i was met with a blast of heat and thought about turning around because working out in this weather is painful and probably not completely safe for everybody. >> that is definitely true especially those who are elderly or disabled. the folks who are stuck in their homes. you definitely want to check in on your friends, neighbors, family members, relatives. make sure they are okay especially if they do not have air conditioning. some of the warning signs of heat stress and heat stroke higher body temperature, changes in sweating, nausea vomiting and changes in mental state. if you see any of those signs or exhibit any of those signs on your own, you do want to get help right away. there will be some assist and out there, of course for the heat and for those who need it. but right now, the best idea if you do need to get outside, wear light colored clothing and bring lots of water. live in heat officials are warning you to be careful when swimming in area rivers. three people drown over the weekend. last night crews found the body of a man who disappeared while swimming across the delaware river to burlington island. there's an abandoned amusement park there. the vick was with two other people when he began to struggle in the water. several people on the shore jumped in to try to save him but couldn't. >> he went down once came back up and went down a second time. >> jumped in the water, threw life preservers and the one gentleman that jumped in actually had his hands on him, he said. >> really? >> he just went in. >> he went under. right across the river from that spot a virginia man apparently drown. marquis richardson was swimming at bristol wharf in bucks county when he disappear. officials suspend a search for him because of dangerous currents. on saturday a man drown in the delaware river in southeastern pennsylvania. philadelphia police officers are investigating eight shootings from overnight. a man was shot in the face on north lawrence street. the gunman also fired shots at the man's father before getting away. investigators are checking security cameras in the area. in the fern rock section, a gunshot victim ran to his sister's place of work for help. this happened around 11:00 last night on olney avenue. police say someone shot the man in the leg. he ran to a nearby dunkin' donuts where his sister works and called for help. police are look for the gunman in that shooting as well. ? just a few hours, septa will begin selling one-day regional rail passes for the weekend pope francis is in philadelphia, having one of these passes is the only way to ride a septa train that particular weekend. katy zachry is live along the ben franklin parkway with all the details. katy? >> reporter: if you're planning to come to center city philadelphia when pope francis is here this is a prime spot when the pope is on the art museum steps addressing the crowd in september. if you haven't thought about how you're getting down here, today is the day to start. beginning at 9:00 a.m. septa will sell special regional rail passes for the weekend of the pope's visit, september 26th and 27th. they're available online only. if you're planning to use regional rail that weekend for any reason you have to buy a pass. those who will be working or traveling say it's an extra hassle. >> it's an inconvenience, it's difficult. i mean people have to work and if it's really impossible to get to your job on time then that's a problem. >> reporter: 175,000 passes will be sold for each day. when you buy a pass you need to know from what station and time you'll be leaving. only a limited number of passes are available for each regional rail station. they're $10 apiece and you can buy ten passes at a time. >> we hope people are responsible, make the purchases they need for their own personal needs and don't try to take advantage of in dover,le 6 in millville. our current temperature, our actual temperature is at 77 in pottstown pottstown, 80 in wilmington and 80 in mt. holly. as we go into the next few hours i'll help you plan your day. by 11:00 a.m. a mix of sun and clouds, 89 degrees. by 2:00 p.m. it will feel like the mid-90s, even high 90s, even triple digits in the region. our actual temperatures range between 94 and morning. there's tens of thousands of people tracy, that travel that interchange between 76 295 and 42 in south jersey. in belmar new jersey there's a problem. >> let's go to jessica boyington. >> it's in belmar new jersey on the black horse pike the southbound side. the black horse pike is a sticky drive so as it is one to two lanes running the whole way. around east brown road we have an overturned vehicle with police activity. roads blocked off at this point. there will be a lot of traffic around the local area. 295 is doing okay at this time. if you want to avoid the highway, take the white horse pike or route 30 to get through the area. you may see delays if you're heading that direction. on the schuylkill expressway around the boulevard we're seeing jams on the westbound side. the westbound schuylkill is what's getting hit first, 20 minutes if you're headed westbound from the vine street expressway up towards the blue route. as for mass transit, no problems for new jersey transit or the patco speed line. chestnut hill west septa train 812 is running 24 minutes late. he died doing what he loved. he would have had it no other way. >> family members prepare for the philadelphia. chris cato is live in our breaking news center. what do we know? >> by our count, tracy, this is the seventh shooting in just about the past seven hours. nine victims one man dead. skyforce 10 just getting over the scene of this one. still looking for police activity here. this is the intersection where it happened. 47th and woodland in southwest philadelphia around 6:00 a.m. we're told a man was shot in the face by a gunman. no idea what the victim is or what his condition is at this point. we know the victim was taken to presbyterian hospital though no condition, no idea who the gunman is. police are looking in that case. this is the ninth person wounded by gunfire in philadelphia in the past seven hours or so in seven separate shootings. the neighborhoods ranging from feltonville, fern rock, frankford frankford, olney kingsessing. all young men in the overarcing headline here no arrest in either of these shootings. a 21-year-old man died in one shooting. the old police legend about the gun violence on the rise as the temperature rises in the summer. that appears to be holding true in a very violent night across the city. now we're confirming a nyn,! -- tennessee, five families are preparing for funerals after last week's attack in chattanooga. state and local leaders are asking what can be done to prevent future attacks. tennessee's governor has ordered a security review of military facilities in his state to see whether some military personnel can be armed to protect themselves. but governors of at least half a dozen states are already working to arm some of their national guard troops. >> i don't want to leave our folks out there as targets when we've had such a horrible event happen just three days ago. >> four marines and one tracking a slight chance of storms as well tuesday night and then relief on the way by wednesday. our humidity levels will drop. for philadelphia 82 degrees, humidity up to 82% as well. feels-like temperature close to 90 degrees and this is at 6:51 in the morning. wind speeds shifted out of the west at 8 miles an hour. we're close to 70 in the poconos, 357 in allentown, 77 in most of the suburbs. throughout the philadelphia area in the 80s. 80 degrees in millville and dover and 81 at the atlantic city airport. it's already a muggy and sticky start to the morning and things will get worse heading into the afternoon. the feels-like temperature in the mid-80s in northeast philadelphia, 86 in dover. our entire area under a heat warning. dangerous relations expected through 8:00 p.m. tonight with the heat index between 100 and 105 degrees. that's what it will feel like when you factor in the humidity. our heat tips are drink plenty of water, stay in the air conditioning, seek shade, check on your pets kids and elderly neighbors. a closer look at the weather alert, air quality not going to be great today. if you suffer from respiratory illnesses, take it easy. don't go for a long jog outside or anything like that. highs around the area 94 for philadelphia, 92 in wilmington and barely at 90 degrees along the shore. you won't see much relief along the shore, though it will be nice if you pop into the water. seven-day forecast shows we are tracking the possibility of a heat wave as we head into tuesday with a high of 92 degrees. that ill, three consecutive days. by
