our top story. the surprising owner of the gun used in the seemingly random murder of a woman on a popular san francisco pier. nbc's hallie jackson has the latest for us. >> reporter: one of the questions has been where did the gun come from and now we have an answerment multiple sources say the gun belonged to a federal agent and was stolen from a car before the shooting. this morning san francisco inging francisco sanchez is behind bars on bail. >> not guilty. >> reporter: after pleading not guilty to the murder of kate stei steinley. it was confirmed to new that is the gun that killed the 32-year-old as she walked on the water front with her dad belonged to a federal agent. the large caliber handgun which maufb a personal weapon was stolen from a car at some point before last week's shooting. sanchez told a local tv station he found the gun wrapped in a t-shirt on a bench. when he picked it up it went off. >> this very well could be a completely accidental discharge of a firearm. >> reporter: prosecutors say it's murder. >> it is about bringing justice to the family. >> reporter: the case at the center of a political fire storm over illegal immigration and san francisco's status as a sanctuary city. sanchez had been deported to mexico five times but never was turned over to immigration officials when released from jail this spring. california senator barbara boxer is asking the governor to look into whether state law was followed when sanchez was released matt and if so whether the law should be changed to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again. >> thank you so much. now to south carolina. crews are searching for the bodies of two people who died when their plane collided with a pill tear jet. the pilot of the f-16 ejected as debris scattered for piles. tom costello covers aviationment he's in washington with the latest. >> reporter: the sheriff's department will use a drone and a dive team to search the river thought to be thds the cessna. now a joint military investigation into how a fighter plane and a two-seat private plane ran into each other in the skies over south carolina. the video from a coast guard chopper shows minutes after the midair collision. a plume of smoke from the ground and the parachute from the downed f-16 pilot. then a coast guard emt is lowered to check on major aaron johnson who ejected safely. his commander says johnson, a senior pilot, was on a rooutine training mission when the incident occurred. >> he was flying with intent to return to base. he was doing practice instrument approaches. >> reporter: the crash happened 11 miles north of charleston near the copper river. the f--16 appeared to strike the side of the cessna that had just taken off from a nearby county airport. the impact ripped the engine from the f-16 sending it crashing to the ground narrowly missing a mobile home. >> we are getting reports of two plane s down at this time. a small plane versus a military-style jet. small plane if the water at this time. >> we seen two planes collide if the sky and a little one going down that was just burst into flames. >> it exploded in midair fireball. and then the plane landeded eded in my yard. >> reporter: in the cessna two people on their way to myrtle beach. with no sign of the people on board they were presumed dead. >> our main goal now is to recover the people in the airplane and bring them home to the families. >> reporter: what's not clear is if the cessna showed up on radar and whether air traffic controllers warned either pilot of a collision. the f.a.a. said it will be part of the investigation. >> thank you so much. >> such a random accident. in the meantime hillary clinton taking on critics this a candid interview. nbc's white interviews. in her first she touched on topics from e-mail to oh questions about trustworthiness and made a play for the all important hispanic voters by trying to link all republicans to donald trump. >> i'm asking the question everywhere i go. >> reporter: hillary clinton drawing lines over the issue of immigration in her first television interview. from iowa she slammed donald trump for calling many mexicans rapists and criminals. >> i'm very disappointed in those comments. i feel very bad and very disappointed with him. >> reporter: clinton lumped the entire gop field in with trump. >> they are all in the same general area on immigration. they range across a spectrum of being either grudgingly welcomer or hostile toward immigrants. >> reporter: republicans fear trump's comments will be a drag on the entire aert and will cost them crucial latino voters. bush's wife is from mexico and he fired back. clinton as fire and rhetoric for republicans but declined to take on her biggest democratic rival. >> i thought it would be a competitive race. >> reporter: when asked about bernie sanders who is narrowing her lead in some states she punted and played defense, responding to polls that show a majority of americans don't trust her. >> people should and do trust me. >> reporter: as for her use of a personal e-mail account while secretary of state. >> everything i did was per pit ed. i went above and beyond in making sure if the state department didn't capture something i made a real effort to get it to them. >> reporter: clinton made headlines when she said san francisco made a mistake in not following the department of homeland security to deport francisco sanchez. it's a point that stiffer border security is needed. this is an indication that immigration this one. very defiant. reminded me of the old days. almost as if she's enjoying the house republicans attacking her. >> she was asked about polling numbers, specifically on trust that plummeted as of late. she said that it was the result of unfounded attacks and accusations, largely fomented by the right and said this is a theme that's been used against me and pi husband for years. what does it sound like? >> defiant. doesn't accept the premise at all. this is a mountain of evidence that over the years there is one hurdle for the clintons -- her and her husband and that's the idea that they are not always straightforward. they play by a different set of rules. she doesn't want to accept the premise. this is the m.o. don't give an inch. >> doesn't it sound like this interview in 1998. take a listen. >> the great story here for anybody willing to find it write about it and explain it is the vast right wing conspiracy against my husband since the day he announced for president. >> is vote. >> they are all worried about trump's impact. but about half i talked to assume he'll burn himself out. one said this is no different from 9-9-9 referring to herman cain. another chunk of the party are concerned if he's on the debate one time even that what hillary clinton did in this interview, using trump to lump the republican party on immigration, that's what the democrats will effectively do. all you have to do is say trump. they did it in '12 with todd aiken. what he meant impacted reproductive rights. if they put up trump's message it sends a he is saj to latinos without sex with young women. the prosecutor decided not to press criminal charges in 2005 and is now running for re-election said cosby has possibly opened himself up to perjury charges which could carry a unsealed documents the plaintiff lawyer asks about seven prescriptions for quaaludes he bought in the 1970s. when you got the quaaludes was it this your mind you would use them for young women to have sex with. >> yes, he replied. there are at least 36 accusation that is stretch back all the way to the late '60s. many are alleged vips who say cosby drugged and sexually assaulted them. >> bill cosby raped me. >> he made me a victim. >> reporter: cosby representatives denied the al gaegss and there have are never been criminal charges against them. normally the documents would remain sealed were opened after a request from the associated press saying he used his public persona to give speeches about morality like this one in 2004. >> i'm talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit. where were you when he was 12. >> reporter: nbc reached out to cosby's representatives for comment. we have not received any. we are learning from multiple sources close to the original lawsuit there is an effort to get the entirety of the deposition unsealed and victim lawyers say it could lead the way to new civil suits against him. >> thank you very much. >> now supermodel beverly johnson claps in a private meeting with bill cosby in the '80s he insisted on her drinking a cappuccino he made. she claims she was drugged. she wrote about it in "the face that took another sip and it just increased from there. >> you describe him sort of dragging you out of the home that he didn't sexually assault you. how were you able to get away? >> after i realized i had been drugged i just looked him right in the eye and uh i can't say what i called him on television. but i went into a tirade. i got louder and louder calling him this name. he just decided, let me get this woman out. it was a survival instinct that kicked in for me . i feel very lucky. >> -- to today. >> yes. >> you feel the news that these are cosby's own words in this deposition. beverly, did you think this day would come? >> frankly -- i wasn't surprised at all. i knew that after 49 women have come forward and have told their story, a story that was similar to mine that eventually it was going to come to light. so i wasn't surprised. i was just very happy for the victims that they have some sense of peace and validation. >> did you yourself feel vindicated after this? >> no. i don't really have feelings like that. for me it's about women using their voice. we are expected as women to be voiceless. it was an opportunity for me to use my voice. i tried to write about the story for my memoirs before december and was told by my editor at simon & schuester it would probably never get past legal. it was not part of the book. after december after the women -- these courageous women told their stories and i told my story in "vanity fair" it wasn't until then my publisher came and said you know the chapter on cosby? we would like to put it in your memoir. >> beverly johnson, [ laughter ] olivia, i'm sure you're not a viper. but it was mainly directed towards our mom. as a reflection of somebody that's about to have two girls, why is the mother/daughter relationship so complex? >> we're the same gender. there's nothing like a mother and a daughter so i think a lot of moms forget that their own conflict they might have had with their own mothers. and you want more for your daughter so when your daughter responds to you in a way you think is cruel or doesn't reflect your intention, it can be hurtful and so many moms refact that way. >> look who's just sitting here waiting her turn. olivia, olivia, oely ya. when did you first feel you went toe to toe with your mom. ? because there's a point where you say yes, yes, yes, then suddenly something shifts. do you remember how old you were when that started? >> there's deaf it will any a big shift around 13 or 14. suddenly i felt she was my friend and i could tell her stuff and talk to her and i don't know why when i was younger i felt there was no need in a way, i don't know like, obviously i talked to her and everything but now like i get advice from her and she's like my best friend and it's -- >> so there was no period of conflict? this sounds very rosy. >> let's hear it from your mother's point of view. thank you so much, olivia. >> i think she was about 12 there was a year where we spoke two different languages. we could not have a conversation without it escalating, doors slamming. it was crazy and i thought how am i going to get through this. >> so how did you? >> i spoke to other moms who had older daughters and it gave me hope. i realized that this is a phase. we came out the other end and she's awesome now. >> did she ever say "mom, i hate you"? because i have girl friends who tell me their daughters say it or it's painful. >> i don't think exactly that but there were definitely things thrown at me that were very painful. i'd have to go in my room and close the door and regroup. >> didn't actually throw things at you. >> words. >> good doctor, when something like that happens, what's the best way to handle that conflict. >> the key is -- and it's hard to do this for mom just to pause for a couple seconds and realize that your daughter is reacting and what you don't want to do is react with the same amount of hostility she has and if you can just collect -- it's hard but collect your thought, respond with warmth, positivity, stay focused on the issue. one thing teenage girls are expert at is they know how to push your buttons and they know how to get what they want and they will deviate to get what sthoept you have to focus on tissue. what you want to do is teach your girls with love. >> so we have a couple movie clips. >> i love movie clips. >> let's see your reaction. is first is "freaky friday" let's see if the mother daughter can relate. >> honey, you need a serious and bracing reality check if you think my life is perfect. >> you could just cut me some slack just this once mom! >> i am beyond cutting you slack anna, but you are not going to the audition. >> yes, i am! >> whyno you're not! >> why not? >> because i said so!
