When Babalwa Gantile graduated with a teacher’s diploma in 2015, she thought she would finally be able to take care her of her elderly mother. After all, her mom had used her meagre pension to put her through tertiary education. But seven years later, the 38-year-old from Payne Village, in Mthatha, has found herself having to sell sweets and ice popsicles near schools to supplement her mother’s monthly pension after unsuccessfully trying to find a teaching job.
