in columbia near i-95 just past i-95. so be aware of that. i'll keep you posted on that situation. here on 95 in virginia, things look great. dale city to woodbridge all the way up into springfield. no issues to report right now as you head up on to 395. we'll take a live look right now at the 14th street bridge and across the river here you're doing just fine. all lanes are open into the downtown area. let's go back over to our map and this time we'll head over to the other side of town. gw parkway, dulles toll road, 66, inside the beltway no issues to the roosevelt bridge. a quick live look near the american legion bridge looking good here. both loops of 9 beltway between bah these -- of the beltway between bethesda and tysons cornering. you're saying there's a chance. maryland ltionors are ready to -- legislators are ready to vote on a gambling bill. >> the bill won't become law unless it's approved by voters this november. 9 news now reporter kristin fisher is live at the proposed sixth came seen know site at national harbor. wasn't it an early morning for lawmakers? >> reporter: it was so early. it was a very late night, early morning for lawmakers in annapolis. the house of delegates didn't vote until just before midnight. the senate voted annual hour later around -- an hour later around 1:00 a.m. now governor martin o'malley is expected to sign the bill around 10:00 this morning. here's a look at what this bill would do if it is approved by voters this november. thbill would essentially green light a sixth casino to be built likely right here at national harbor. it would allow table games at all state casinos and cut tax rates on slots at all current casinos except for the one in rocky gap. the last provision is designed to offset the economic impact that this future sixth sino could potentially have, the one that will likely be built here at national harbor. prince george's county executive and the delegates have voted for the bill -- that voted for the bill believe this could bring in big business for prince george's county. >> this is big legislation. we're talking about providing economic development for prince george's county, for the washington, d.c. region. we have 40 million visitors that come annually to the d.c. area. about capturing some of that in a resort style gaming facility that would create 4,000 jobs under one roof. >> reporter: that was delegate justin rock, a democrat from prince george's county. he voted for the bill, the gambling expansion bill. but six other democratic delegates from this county, prince george's county, voted against the bill that would bring this casino and all that business to their district. i'll let you know who they are coming up in half an hour at 5:30. >> kristin fisher reporting live from national harbor. 5:03 now. pit bulls are still inherently dangerous according to the state in maryland, the law there. the bill aimed at changing that died early this morning in the special session as well. it would have addressed the liability concerns related to a court ruling about dog bites regarding pit bulls. the house and senate could not reconcile the differences in the bills. the city of laurel, maryland and one of its police officers are facing a $3 million lawsuit. it stems from an incident ten days ago in a restaurant parking lot. cell phone video shows officers escortg a handcuffed suspect to a patrol car when one of the officers strikes the handcuffed man three times while shouting curse words. laurel's mayor denied our interview request but does say the results of an internal investigation will be forwarded to the state's attorney. reports of lavish trips overseas, sweetheart deals and a list of other concerns are now prompting some strong words from the u.s. secretary of transportation. secretary lahood, d.c. mayor, and governors of maryland and virginia all say they are gravely concerned over the board's lack of accountability. they're calling for sweeping changes right now. the board says a lot of those suggestions are already being implemented. it is coming up on 5:05. time for the latest your money report of the morning. >> jessica doyle is here with today's headlines. good morning, jess. >> good morning to both of you. we're hoping for a better day on wall street. that would be really nice. investors have had trouble shaking the lingering concerns about china and europe. those overhad doughed good news out about our -- overshadowed good news about our economy yesterday. we spent more in july increasing retail spending by the biggest amount in five months. checking the numbers, the dow stands this morning at 13,172, added about 3 points in trading yesterday. red arrows, though, for the nasdaq and s&p. nasdaq was off by a point and a half and the s&p 500 was off franceally. if you want to -- was off fractionally. if you want to invest, intel is investing in national oil and philips 66 adding those stocks to its $74 billion stock portfolio. berkshires investments are watched closely by wall street because if buffett is successful -- [indiscernible] speaking of rich people, it might be nice to have more money than republican presidential hopeful mitt romney no matter your political affiliation. he's worth an estimated quarter of a billion dollars but you don't have to invest like warren buffet to get there. if you're the only person to pick all six of tonight's power ball numbers, you're going to claim a $320 million jackpot. okay. so here's what you need to know. if you take the lump sum option, that's a check for just over $213 million. no one has won this jackpot since june 23. of course power ball played in d.c., maryland, virginia, 41 other states, you know whaim' doing aft show today. maybe i'll go to each individual location and buy a ticket. >> we thought the strategy was let's go somewhere rural and maybe get a better chance. >> fingers crossed for all of us. by that i mean me. >> okay. just in case you don't leave too soon, what do you have for us in the next half-hour? >> you'll need power ball to pay for gas. we'll talk about how that's getting worse. >> don't want to hear that. a local police department may have been targeted in an identity theft scheme. that story is coming up. >> plus, virginia troopers file charges in an interstate crash between a big rig and a bus. it could have turned out much worse. >> ahead in sports, we'll see if the nationals were able to repeat monday's two touchdown performance. you're watching 9news now. 5:09 on this wednesday morning. fairly quiet out there. skies are partly cloudy. got a lone little tiny sprinkle in rockingham county. later this afternoon we'll have to watch out for a threat of again a couple of strong thunderstorms which could be popping. we start quiet. unlike yesterday, rain is not going to be a factor for the morning rush hour. by 9:00 77 degrees. winds sort of northwesterly today. by noon 84. then this afternoon mid- to upper 80s for highs but again the threat for strong storms could be with us for the late afternoon, evening commute. seven-day forecast we'll detail a cooldown headed this way by the weekend. right now monika is in with your timesaver traffic. we're taking a look at the sterling area on the inbound side of the dulles toll road here at route 28 coming out from the airport all the way through reston and herndon. you're going to be absolutely fine. no problems on 66 outside the beltway as well. i'll have more on traffic coming up in my next report at 5:16. back to you. making news now coming up on 5:10, thorpts close off -- authorities close off part of maryland after a propane tanker crashed into a condo complex. investigators believe the tanker lost its brakes coming down a hill. the driver suffered minor injuries no one else was hurt but the area was evacuated as a precaution. virginia state police blame a tractor-trailer driver for a crash on i-81 yesterday near harrisonburg. investigators say the big truck was heading northbound when it hit a commercial passenger bus while it was changing lanes. both vehicles went into the median. the bus driver is the only victim who suffered any injuries. an internal memo obtained by 9news now shows arlington police are looking into a possible scam targeting their own officers. a woman claiming to be from afleck recently gave a presentation to county police. she's one of two suspects under arrest in atlanta and charged in an identity theft scheme targeting officers in that city. it's kind of hard to stick to a diet if the food you try to eat stinks. coming up at 5:49, an area chef shows us how to make the dishes that are friendly for diabetics and taste great, too. >> no more two a days for the redskins. grateful players are celebrating coming up at 5:22. >> next at 5:10, howard is promising a cooldown in the seven-day forecast. we'll be right back. good morning. welcome back to nine fine now. 5:-- 9news now. 5:14. a special good morning to beverly. a breast cancer survivor having difficulties with lung cancer. she was just delightful. a special good morning you to. we're going to get a cooldown but we've got to pay the piper first. >> a couple of storms again this afternoon and friday. friday is going to be hot but you're right, the cooldown is coming for the weekend. low, maybe mid-80s for temperatures so that should be delightful. hopefully we can clean out the air. >> low to mid 80s? >> there's construction in place on the fairfax county parkway north and southbound at lee chapel road. that will be there till 6:00 this morning. here in springfield the lanes are open on i-95. i'll be back with more traffic at 5:30. you're watching 9news now. good morning. welcome back to 9news now on this wednesday morning. i'm andrea roane. it's that time again. i'm mike hydeck. here's monika samtani. >> i'm starving. i talk about coffee all morning long. then we move to food about halfway through the morning and we're ready to eat. >> you must have been a dog in another life. food motivated. >> you're probably right. >> weather wise, let's talk about that because i don't want to get in any more trouble here. we've got a decent start today as opposed to yesterday. it's going to be dry, maybe a few clouds mixing in with the sunshine but we won't have that wet commute like tuesday brought us. your day planner calling for a mix of clouds and sunshine. sunrietz, look at that -- sunrise, look at that. 6:22. a mix of clouds and sunshine, 84 by noon. then this afternoon the threat for a couple of storms. the couple of storms could be on the strong side. that's why today a yellow alert day. you'll have to pay attention because they certainly could impact your plans later on. we're watching an area of weather coming out of kentucky and tennessee with the showers and storms. that's going to throw some of those high clouds over us first. as that energy gets here later today with the daytime heating, the threat for the storms will be with us. temps in the low to mid-60s in the shenandoah valley now. very comfortable. luray 63. down to 69 in fredricksburg and la plata. annapolis mid-70s. your highs today mid- to upper 80s. watch out for some late afternoon thunderstorms. 5:29. monika, happy wednesday. happy wednesday. on metro's orange line between foggy bottom and clarendon, there are some track problems. due to that, they are single tracking through that area. expect some delays because of that on metro's orange line. i will keep you posted on that situation. in the meantime, beltway looks great. no problems on the bw parkway or route 50 through cheverly. we're looking good all the way into the northeast corridor and over to the anacostia river. you're going to be just fine this morning. we'll take a live look outside. first of all taking a look over here on 270 coming in from the north, you're going to see a bit of volume forming. you can see this here at route 109. that continues to about 121 before the pace improves. back over to our maps, this time to southern maryland with we're fine on route 210, route 4, 5, route 301. everything is good up to the beltway. heading through the wilson bridge, all lanes are open. i'll be back with more traffic at 5:39. well, we've already heard the negative tone in the 2012 presidential election. a
