123. the outer loop in maryland, no problem. the inner loop, we do have construction at route 50. should be clearing by the start of the 5:00 hour. still ahead, a look at 267, the dulles toll road. i'll have that in my next traffic report at 4:40. back to you. here is a look at things making news today. the taliban is claiming responsibility for a deadly attack on a hotel in afghanistan's capital. >> a team of suicide bombers stormed the building killing several people and setting off an intense four-hour standoff. the attackers were also killed but only after nato helicopters moved in. the assault came ahead of an important meeting on the handover of security from nato forces, eventually to afghanistan. firefighters in los alamos, new mexico are scrambling to protect a nuclear lab from a fast-moving wildfire. officials insist dangerous materials are safely stored an can withstand the flames. the fire was already charred more than 90 square miles and has forced thousands of people from their homes. an emergency hearing will be held in san diego today to determine if prison officials have the right to force the tucson shooting rampage suspect to take antipsychotic medication. jared lee loughner has been forcibly fed the drug since being diagnosed as a schizophrenic and mentally unable to stand trial. loughner faces 49 federal charges in the january shooting which killed six and injured 13, including arizona congresswoman gabrielle giffords. johnson & johnson is recalling more than 60,000 bottles of tylenol extra strength caplets of because of a musty, moldy smell. >> the pills were made in february of 2009. the odor has been linked to a trace odor known to cause temporary stomach ailments. >> president obama is once again turning to social media. did he this before in his campaign. he's doing it once again in his re-election effort. he's asking supporters to use facebook to declare i'm in for his re-election campaign. >> the president is also using twitter to blast out messages to his millions of followers. yesterday, the president stopped by a factory in davenport, iowa. it was his first stop in the state since announcing his re- election. he defended his record on the economy. >> the problems that we developed didn't happen overnight. we're not going to solve them overnight either. but we will solve them. >> we'll hear much more from president obama today. he scheduled a morning news conference on the economy. job growth and the difficult deficit talks. this will be his first formal white house news conference in three monthens. the senate foreign relations committee has given president obama a slight victory when it comes to the u.s. involvement in libya. the panel voted 14-5 to approve u.s. participation in this nato campaign against libyan leader moammar gadhafi. the full senate is expected to consider resolutions coming up next month. more d.c. police officers could face criminal charges, a source tells 9news those officers are being investigated for a savage beating of a man outside lotus lounge, a popular d.c. nightclub. >> police officials will only confirm an investigation into the attack outside the club is underway and that officers have not been arrested at this point. but as ken molestina tells us, a source within the department is saying a lot more about this. >> reporter: here's what we know according to the source, three officers in total are being investigated. the officers are believed to have been off-duty. two of them are members of the vice squad and a third officer may be involved for failure to intervene. the beating, according to the source within the department, resulted in a man losing his eye. we're told d.c. police officers are banned from working any off- duty details at any business that serves alcohol unless it is organized through the department. at this point, it is unclear if the officers were at the club as patrons or moonlighting. i'm ken molestina, 9news now. the source within the department also says officers could be facing charges of felony mayhem. not just assault. >> that charge refers to a serious assault which leads the person with a long lasting physical impact. in this case, that would be the many who allegedly lost an eye during the beating. the justice department is investigating the mishandling of remains at arlington national cemetery. according to "the washington post," they're looking for evidence of possible contracting fraud and falsification of records. >> last year, as you may remember, the army discovered the cemetery had dysfunctional management systems and wasted millions on information technology contracts that produced useless results. worst of all, misplaced misidentified 6,000 remains. earlier this month, 69 boxes of burial records were found in an abandoned storage unit in northern virginia. they contain grave cards and social security numbers and other information as well. former chief of staff, the d.c. council member jim graham gets eight months in prison. ted loza was convicted of accepting bribes from a taxicab representative. in exchange, loza was supposed to help get legislation the international monetary fund for the first time in the organization's 66-year history. this move makes her one of the most powerful women in the world. french finance minister christine lagarde will begin her five-year term next week. she will immediately confront the european debt crisis which threatens the global economy. she'll try to restore the inf reputation as her predecessor, dominique strauss-kahn resigned after he was charged with sexually assaulting a hotel house keeper in new york. wall street will follow the appointment closely since it has big concerns about the financial health of the eu. and as for trading, this week has been pretty positive so far. checking the numbers, the dow stands at 12,188. added 145 points in trading yesterday. second triple digit gain this week. nasdaq up by 41. s&p 500 higher by almost 17 points. today, one of maryland's strongest industries could get another boost. montgomery county executive isaiah leggett is expected to announce a new local initiative to bolster the biotech sector. the event will happen at 4:00 this afternoon during the biointernational convention at the washington convention center. it turns out the bioscience industry is really paying off in maryland. "the washington examiner" reports the business has become one of the largest drivers of job growth in the state. responsible for a third of all job gains between 2002 and 2010. life sciences businesses account for 71,000 jobs with an average salary of $91,000. that's 76% higher than the state average industry. turns out roughly 6% of all economic activity in maryland. you're picking an will be about our high for the day. by 8:00, we're back down to 81 with sunshine and a northwest wind at 10. with the drier air moving in, it will feel so much better for the next couple of days. relish it because as we head toward the weekend, it is going to get blazingly hot once again. these were the big time showers and storms last night. really, you thought it was bad around here in stafford, it is much worse from richmond down to norfolk. they got hammered with a lot of severe weather yesterday afternoon. this morning, the clouds are thinning slowly off to the north and west. looking at the dew points, you really see where the moisture is. the yellows here, dew points in the upper 60s and low 70s. dew points in cleveland, pittsburgh, columbus back in the 50s now. with the northwesterly wind, this dry air is going to be moving in right toward us. we'll get rid of the muggies and we'll really have a nice couple of days around here. temperatures are responding also with that front passing hagerstown. they're 72. cumberland is in the 60s. south and east of the front, still low to middle 70s. 47 at the pax river air station. here at reagan national, still, 75 degrees with cloudy skies and our dew points are still in their 70s. it is muggy right now. by 9:00, 10:00, i think the dew points are down toward 60 which is going to feel better. want to start in the tropics this morning. our first tropical storm of the season. this is arlene in here, spinning not that well organized. not going to do too much more. a little bit stronger as it heads toward tampico. don't think it will enough time to develop into a hurricane. whatever happens with this, it will stay well south of the border. winds were 40 miles per hour. there is the front coming through western maryland, approaching frederick and the shenandoah valley in virginia. behind it, the dry air, as we said. ahead of it, the humid air. all of the showers go away from us so we're left with sunshine and drier air. in fact, tonight, what we're going to see with the clear skies, we'll have some temperatures down up in the shenandoah valley, western maryland in the 50s. we'll likely be low to mid-60s in most of the region in the metro washington area. then a gorgeous thursday with nothing but sunshine and even friday, sunny but as the winds turn back to the southwest on friday, it looks like temperatures then will shoot above 90 and well into the 90s if not near 100 near the weekend. 88 today. it is drying out. it will be warm. very pleasant on thursday. we're heating up again on friday. 92. slight, slight chance of an afternoon storm but it looks like the better chance of a storm, just an afternoon storm really saturday and again on the 4th of july. look at these temperatures. 98 saturday. i got three 99s. i just didn't want to put 100 yet. we'll see if the ridge builds as much as the models are advertising. we'll have to up the temperatures believe it or not. minutes or so. overall, not so bad. moving to 270, if you were making the southbound trip, in your opinion the clear going northbound, still going to find lingering construction around route 85. that will be there for the next 15 minutes. in virginia, the 66 roadwork we received going eastbound near the nutley street exit, that's now out of the way. the same goes for the inner loop construction near the mixing bowl. we have that exit back open now. no longer detouring on to 395. the outer loop is ok at 123 as well. finally, we'll wrap with this nice shot. very nice and quiet for drivers coming out of rosslyn crossing the key bridge making their way on to m street through georgetown. still ahead, a look at 50. that's coming up at 4:56. >> today, an fda committee is going to issue recommendations concerning avastin and whether or not it should be used to treat breast cancer patients. >> this is the second time the food and drug administration has studied avastin. it has recommended pulling the drug for the treatment of breast cancer before agreeing to re-examine the issue. danielle nottingham has more on the hearings and reaction from families. >> reporter: breast cancer patients and their families rallied outside the fda. as heated hearings began over the drug avastin. >> this decision cannot, cannot be driven by anecdotes. it must be driven by science. she apparently has not listened to the many women who are standing here today and have benefitted from avastin. >> avastin supporters are challenging an fda panel's recommendation to withdraw the drug's approval for treating breast cancer. studies show it does not increase survival rates and comes with significant side effects. >> high blood pressure which can sometimes get quite high. and strokes. heart attacks. >> but patients with advanced breast cancer like erica rothheim say the drug is keeping them alive. >> several doctors told me they believe the avastin gave me such a wonderful outcome. >> reporter: avastin is still fda approved for other cancers so even if it is withdrawn for breast cancer, doctors could still prescribe it off label. but without fda approval, insurers may not cover avastin for breast cancer patients meaning patients could be looking at more than $100,000 a year out of pocket. >> i would be devastated. i can't afford that drug. >> the panel makes its recommendation wednesday but it is up to the commissioner of the food and drug administration to make the final decision. danielle nottingham, cbs news, silver spring, maryland. avastin has already been approved for use in breast cancer patients in europe. cancer experts here in the u.s. hope further research will be able to identify a marker which can predict which breast cancer patients will benefit most from avastin. >> family members of breast cancer patients who support the use of the drug are going to hold a second protest outside the fda facility along new hampshire avenue this morning. it starts at 7:00 a.m. six astronauts took shelter in lifeboats to avoid a piece of space junk. the unknown object came within 1100 feet of the station. >> that is much closer than any piece of space junk has ever gotten. the mission control ordered the astronauts into two russian soyuz capsules. after the junk passed, they floated back to the space station and got back to work as normal. >> even with some cuts in pay and benefits for new hires, it still pays to be a full time lifeguard in newport beach, california. city leaders came underfire after a budget debate revealed some lifeguards earn, get this, more than $108,000 a year in pay! >> in response, the starting salaries for a full-time lifeguard has been cut in half. they haven't revealed what the new starting pay is yet. it also pays to be a seasonal part-time lifeguard at newport beach. they make between $16 and $22 an hour. >> they're saving a l.i.e. you can't put a price on that. >> the 2011 crab season in maryland has been a good one. but vendors are worried that may not be the case by the end of this week. >> "the baltimore sun" is reporting supplies could be stretched by a spike in demand because of the holiday weekend and it could bring the price up to about $200 per bushel. the maryland waterman's association says crabs typically become scarce around this time of year. >> before we head to
