not a nice way to start the week. but it's better than it was a year ago when all that moisture was snow. hello and welcome to wusa 9news at noon. alison remembers that snow storm well. and she's here with our first alert forecast, alison? >> it was so different one year ago. we had all this moisture. but we were a lot colder. we're in the 40s and around 50 degrees. so just rain. there are areas with snow. we'll detail that out in a minute. not around the metro, that's for sure. we have a steady light rain through the metro right now. but pockets of heavier rain off to the west. winchester is seeing some good down pours. and there's that snow through west virginia. that's elevation driven. the higher you go, the colder it is, you'll see snow there. everywhere else, some good steady rainfall. you can see 2 to 3 inches of rain for some areas. and that could cause some flooding concerns. a flood watch is issued for those areas. we have a while to go with this rain. it will be heavy at times. the heaviest rain will come from now until early afternoon. but showers will continue as this system continues to push off to the north and west. the winds are the second factor we have to deal with. and we've seen a lot of trees down from earlier today. and limbs down as well. tree limbs down as well. so winds are out of the northeast. and look at this. these are current gusts. this is not a forecast. 47 miles per hour. that is why we have the wind advisory in place. a wind warning for parts of del marva. it's been so soggy for the past couple days. it's easy for trees to come down. we're seeing that around the area. the winds will let up later on tonight. it'll be rather breezy at 20 to 30 miles per hour winds. that will be possible through tomorrow. you can get the latest forecast on our wusa 9 app. i'll have the futu by hour when the rain gets out and when the wind subsidessings coming up later. investigators are working to find out whether or not the weather played a role during a crash in maryland. a truck and two cars were involved in a collision. so far authorities haven't released the name of the person who was killed. drivers are being asked to avoid old sandy spring road. police have it closed in both directions. >> weather may have also played a role in this school bus crash in bethesda. montgomery county police say a vehicle rear ended the bus on river road near beach tree road. four children were on the bus but no one was hurt. severe weather churned through parts of the south this weekend from texas to georgia. tornadoes left at least 19 people dead, 15 of those deaths occurred in georgia where twisters ripped homes from their foundation, toppled trees and utility poles. ne mississippi, four people when the tornado hit that region. survivors tell about witnessing the destruction. >> i wanted to look outside. i did. i saw the trees leaning. and you could hear a rumble. it sounded like a train. >> we was laying in bed. >> president trump pledged his support to the devastated communities. president trump tweets busy week, planned with a heavy focus on jobs and national security. and that includes a meeting earlier today worship service. muhammad helped lead the adam center in sterling. he's aware of some of the comments the president has made, he believes his appearance at saturday's service was an opportunity to united states will move its embassy from the la vive to jerusalem. but, we're at the beginning stages of etch discussing this subject. >> reporter: moving the u.s. embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem is more than brick and mortar and changing the signs. jerusalem is a city and capitol claimed by israelis and palestinians and it's home to some of the most sensitive religious sites. moving the embassy here recognizes jerusalem as the capitol of israel and would damage the peace process. no other country has its embassy in jerusalem due to conflicting claims on the city. on sunday israel approved hundreds of east jerusalem before president trump's phone call with prime minister benjamin netanyahu. it's a move that's frustrated palestinians. the concern here is that that frustration described their phone conversation yesterday as very warm. we have some great news about former president george hw bush and former first lady barbara bush. mrs. bush was discharged where doctors were treating her for bronchitis. former president bush is expected to move from the hospital's icu unit where he's being treated for pneumonia. a woman who went missing is being treated for hypothermia after she was found this morning. flames broke out after 2:00 a.m in a ho lewis dale road. officials say the unidentified woman was in the home when the fire broke out. they believe she ran through the woods. they found her a few blocks away. the cause of the fire remains under investigation. someone shot at a police cruiser and now fairfax county police want to catch the gunman before someone gets hurt. it happened this morning during a traffic stop on georgetown pike near walker road in grape falls. police say a passenger in the car ran off as the driver sped away. they say the driver turned back and opened fire at the police cruiser. the officer was not hit. disaster narrowly averted when tons of rock and mud barreled down a mountain side straight at a tour bus full of people. but in california, mud slides killed several people as one of the largest storms to hit southern california in years continues to trigger widespread flooding. and taking a look at first alert doppler, we have our own weather problems to alison ray is tracking the storms that triggered today's yellow weather alert. we'll be back. the two suspects involved in a deadly mall robbery go before a judge later today. police in san antonio texas say one person who was in the shop to get his wedding bands cleaned was killed and six others were hurt when they tried to stop yesterday's jewelry store robbery. one of the good samaritan's shot the armed suspect. united airlines is working to get things back to normal after grounding all its flights. a computer glitch forced the airline to issue a ground stop forcing travelers to wait around. it was lifted about 2.5 hours later. the whole problem left thousands of passengers stuck until it was fixed. >> the flight attendants seemed a little frustrated. and passengers seemed a little frustrated. even just wants to go home i guess. >> are you frustrated? >> i'm a little frustrated. >> people are getting home. but there are still a few away cars. the storm is blamed for at least three deaths. >> heavy rain and rushing water submerged southern california sunday. causing mud slides, and turning typically dry roads into rivers. rescue crews around the region race to save stranded drivers. pulling a father and son from their stalled truck over night. braving the racing waters to save this trapped family with a young child. and floating a raft to a couple before their truck when 15-foot waves in san diego dragged two women into the ocean on saturday, an onlooker dove in saving one of them. >> i jumped in. and i don't know. i got her. and i threw her over my shoulder. fighting the waves, rescue crews searched for 40 minutes before finding the second woman and pulling her to shore. she died late sunday. to the north near los angeles, roadways were covered with nearly four feet of water, forcing life guards to go door to door to help families. >> we've been here for five years. this is the highest we've seen it get. >> we're expected to get more rain on the west coast. this could just be the beginning of our problem. cbs news, santa clarita california. the weather is one of the reasons the american red cross fo issuing an emergency call someone in this country needs a blood transfusion every two seconds. donations usually drop off during the holidays. now the recent storms have canceled blood drives. lorrie lawrence is a regular blood donor. she gives a pint every two months. >> one of my daughters had surgery, a number of surgical procedures when she was little. she needed blood. i know it's a necessary thing. >> there's no real reason not to come. it just takes an hour out of my day. there's no real reason not to give. >> the red cross had to cancel 300 blood drives because of bad weather. now they're extending hours at many donation centers. the red cross is responsible for 40% of the nation's blood supply. the remaining 60% is provided by other organizations. today is a yellow weather weather that's causing some of this need. this is a hefty system headed our way. we have a lot of rain and wind. this is the same system that ripped through parts of our southern gulf states and had that big tornado out break, it's not going to be severe for us. but rain and high winds, we are still getting our fair share of weather today. it's just not going to be severe as far as thunderstorm activity. a few bolts of lightning i've seen on radar though. it's cloudy and foggy. this has been the picture for the past few days. and everything is soggy. that's why we're seeing a lot of those tree limbs come down. and trees themselves come down with these strong winds. look at these wind gusts. 47 miles per hour. that's why we have the wind advisory in place. and it'll be in place through today. sustained winds, 32 miles per hour. that's a nor'easter if you've ever seen one. 44 degrees. remember this time a year ago, we re amount of water but a lot colder temperatures. it's just rain. i know there are a lot of snow lovers that are a little disappointed. we have snow in the higher elevations. but we're in the thick of it as far as the rain. this will take all day to get out of here. through tomorrow morning, we're still going to deal with showers. you see the pockets of rain. the yellow near stafford and along 95, we have rain for areas along the 81 corridor. that's where we have the flood watch. we're seeing the heavy rain continue for at least another hour or so. this is the time frame of the heaviest rain through 1:00. then things will still be here. but it'll start to be a little lighter for the rest of the evening. totals are 1 to 2 inches. where that flood watch is in place. we're still going to get of rain. but because it's nice and steady and light, the flooding potential isn't as great. when we get 2 to 3 inches of rain, we can't help but have flooding potential. 40 miles per hour. we have 47 last hour. they will continue. now this is the forecast model later on tonight, still 25 miles per hour gusts. the winds will turn as the low pressure gets out of the way for tomorrow. but it's still going to be breezy tomorrow. 8:00 in the morning, winds 20 to 25 miles per hour out of the northwest. let's time out the rain for you, the heaviest rain right now, you notice the snow through the higher elevations, and we'll see the rain turn to a steady light rain later on tonight. this is 5:30, so your commute home is going to be a wet one. it'll be hard to see with the fog around, no sunshine today, that's for sure, 7:30 tonight. we're still dealing with showers. it will be spottier into the over night hours. but into tomorrow morning, we're dealing with a couple more showers. if you're an early commuter, between 4:00, and 6:00 in the have those showers, the rest of the day, partly cloudy skies increasing. a little more sunshine by the afternoon. notice how the wind arrows are indicating a strong wind. still rather breezy. the winds don't let up until tuesday night into wednesday. wednesday, very warm for this time of year. 51 degrees today and tomorrow. 62 for wednesday. that is all ahead of crashing temperatures. winter is back for
