according to this criminal complaint, cornell went on twitter last summer and posted statements, videos and other content supporting isis. in the fall a confidential fbi source made contact with cornell and they began going back and forth about this. when they met in november, cornell said he considered members of congress enemies and he was planning an attack on the capitol in d.c. he wanted himself and the source to detonate pipe bombs and then use guns to shoot officials and employees at the capitol. cornell also felt he had the authority from isis leaders to carry this out. he made his initial court appearance today in ohio. he's due back in court friday. we'll have live reaction from the capitol coming up on wusa9 news at 7:00. a ward 8 council member candidate and son of the late marion barry is accused of making threats and destroying property at a d.c. bank. our mola lenghi is live in the newsroom to tell us about this. >> according to metropolitan police reports, christopher barry threatened a 27-year-old female bank employee before destroying a bank surveillance camera. reports say barry who just last week filed as a candidate for ward 8 city council seat last held by his late father attempted to make a large cash withdrawal from a pnc bank on seventh street northwest yesterday. when he was denied from making that withdrawal, the report says he then became upset telling the bank employee, "you always give me a hard time." and threatening her by saying, "i'm going to have somebody waiting for you when you get off." the police report says bare then picked up a trash -- barry then picked up a trash can and launched it into a 10-foot high security glass into a surveillance camera destroying that. barry has been arrested for drugs and convicted in the past. our bruce johnson sat down with barry last week after he filed his ward 8 candidate and barry told bruce that that life was in the past, that he had matured and moved on from those low points in his life. no charges have been filed in yesterday's alleged incident. metropolitan police are still investigating. we did reach out to barry and his attorney for comment today but have yet to hear back from either. i'm mola lenghi for wusa9. still no clear explanation tonight how all that smoke in the metro tunnel spiraled so far out of control monday that scores of people ended up in the hospital and one person was killed. the ntsb is moving much more quickly than usual to come up with answers with a briefing for congress next week and a more detailed report will be coming in 30 days. >> that's prince george's county because we got to know now what -- that's important because we got to know now what do we got to do to keep this from happening again and we don't know enough. >> a 2010 protocol calls for operators to back up to the nearest station if possible and shut off the ventilation and drive through the smoke if they have to. on video from inside the trapped train you can hear the operator saying he could not pull forward until another train cleared la enpant station. one of the passengers who -- l'enfant station. one of the passengers who ended up in the smoke filled l'enfant station went back to retrace exactly what he saw. he recorded the events on camera before being transmitted to gw hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. our bruce johnson is back here live with la he had to say. >> curtis mosey, i've known him for many years. not much rattles him, but what happened down under inside the metro station on monday actually scared curtis mosey. your first time back? >> yes. >> reporter: on monday afternoon after the tunnel in l'enfant plaza was filling with smoke, curtis mosey was waiting to transfer from the yellow line to the green. >> a lot of time it's a funny smell. you smell the electricity burning, something minor. i thought it was nothing. >> reporter: there was smoke everywhere, yet no one seemed especially bothered and no one from metro sounded an alarm. >> first i was saying the metro people there, they're not saying anything and there's a lot of people out here so, i'm thinking everything is good. >> reporter: it was still coming into the station. >> still coming. >> reporter: curtis took three clips of video monday. in the second clip you can see the increased smoke. visibility outside the tunnel had become worse. >> it kept getting thicker, thicker, thicker. >> reporter: and then panic from a lone metro employee who started barking orders to get out of the station. >> i thought it was a terrorist. any moment i thought i was going to hear gunshots or a big boom. >> reporter: curtis made his way up the escalator to arriving firefighters who guided him to an ambulance. >> it was scary out here. i can't imagine in that tunnel trapped like that in the dark, smoke. >> reporter: we talked to a number of firefighters again today and the first responders tell us again that when they first arrived, that original dispatch said there was smoke in the tunnel. it said nothing about people stuck on the metro train inside the tunnel. they're saying when they first arrived, metro and the dispatcher did not tell them there were people stuck on a train in the tunnel. >> a tragedy. they need to get it right. our lives were at stake. that's unacceptable. >> last night at 5:30 the interim d.c. fire chief eugene jones and mayor muriel bowser said when firefighters arrived and what they had been told by the dispatchers is all part of the investigation. curtis mosey figures he was in the station about 15 minutes. you see no firefighters in his video. they had not arrived yet he says. you've heard passengers say they waited in some cases in thick smoke up to 40 minutes to be rescued. >> sometime the more we hear about this, the more disturbing. >> anxious to see the dispatches, the communications, calls to 911. somebody is not laying it out there the way it really happened. >> you're laying it out there. we're talking snow, our topper shutt nailing the snow forecast. he told us where we were going to get it, showed us where it was going to be. when are we getting a break from all this? >> screen times, but tonight the parents are under investigation because they let their kids walk around the neighbor together but unaccompanied by an adult. >> i grew up in new york city in the '70s and no one hesitated to let their kids walk around. the only thing that's changed now is the fear. >> reporter: the 10-year-old and 6-year-old are allowed to walk around their silver spring neighborhood together but unaccompanied by an adult. >> they're very proud of their independence. they understand to hold hands when they cross the street, look both ways, make sure the light is with them. >> reporter: but during recent walks from two local playgrounds, separate callers alerted police and child protective services. >> they came and interviewed kids at school without our permission or knowledge and when they were talking to them, they are painting a picture of a world that is very scary. >> reporter: danielle and sasha mativ now say their parenting style is under assault. police and child protective services have come to their home and questioned their children at their elementary school. >> they were asking my son ralphie what he would do if he was grabbed by a stranger. they were telling him you know there are creams out there that are just waiting to grab children if they're walking by themselves. >> reporter: cps could not address the specific case but did point to maryland law which defines child neglect as a failure to provide proper care and supervision of a child. this week a cps worker came to the mativs home with a safety plan. >> when i said i couldn't sign any legal paperwork before our attorney looked at it, she said if you don't sign, we will take the kids right away and she called the police. >> reporter: now state law prohibits anyone under the deceiving, everybody else well below freezing already, dew points in the low 20s. temps will dip well below freezing tonight, winds out of the north at 9:00. clouds hang tough tonight, no melting. bus leesburg and manassas and around 30 downtown. by 9:00 temps start going up a little, 32 downtown and then upper 20s to around 30, even la plata tomorrow at 9:00 30. even fredericksburg only will be 32. by lunchtime pretty good day to walk to lunch, not windy, lots of sunshine and again this is all we can ask for in january, but generally upper 30s to around 40. then by 5:00 24 hours from now
