Officers found them all safe but they do say theyre continuing to investigate the case. One that we hope will eventually be successful, the march disappearance of 8year old relisha rudd. It prompted wusa9s bring them Home Campaign. As we scroll photos of missing children from around our area on the screen, remind you today is relishas 9th birthday. She vanished living at the d. C. Mommyless shelter. Our report there led to another sat disoaf, the lack of safe playgrounds. But the homeless childrens play time project has helped change all of that but we still need your help. Were joined by playground volunteer Rebecca Goldberg along with kevin fitzgerald, an executive with project sponsor. We thank you both for getting up so early to be with us. What inspired pepco to get so actively involved in this effort . It boils down to an afternoon where my wife and i in reading in the Washington Post read about this homeless shelter where there were 500 homeless children. I came into work that monday, had a conversation with joe rigby. Debbie jarvis and i went out to the site, met with the homeless Children Play time project and i was truly amazed at what i saw. The work that they were doing. What struck me is my own children and the fact that my own children as they grow up, we want them to play as much as possible. We noticed there was no playground. So in discussing this with jamella lawson, we said what can we do to help you. She said if you can help us get that play ground, that would be terrific. Form it has been b. But were trying to raise money to help staff it to make sure the kids are safe. That also includes volunteers like rebecca. From a corporate standpoint pepco is there but youre a volunteer. Volunteerism is so important in our community. Ive been a part of the washington, d. C. Area for a long time. I felt this was a perfect opportunity for me to get involved. Im a social worker in the community and i focus on child develop. Its part of your heart to begin with since you chose your career that way. What were talking about is keeping it staffed and the importance of keeping it staffed and well maintained, what it means to the parents and what theyre able to doto do. Tell us more about that. Their children are in a safe environment and being supervised appropriately. Were hearing theres over 500 kids in the shelter itself so its helpful to have supervisors out there to keep it controlled, keep the kids safe. Its nice, too, because the parents have an opportunity to come out and sit on the benches and read the numb, a book and observe their child in play and really see that joy in their child. Weve seen so many studies how it can impact their health. This is a perfect opportunity to help the kids take the next step in life. You have heard from any of the kids, talked to them or their parents since did you get so personally involved. When debbie and i were down there that afternoon and i would encourage folks to go down and participate and volunteer, i sat down with a little girl and i read go dog, go one of my favorite books. As i got up to leave, she said sir, would you stay . Lets go play. Lets go play. I want to go play. I ought, wow, this is really what this is all about is giving these kids an opportunity to grow and develop mentally and physically. How do you say no to Something Like that. Exactly. Were giving them a safe place to play thanks to pepco and volunteers like rebecca. But we need your help. Were encouraging you to keep this playground staffed and maintained properly. Tonight at 5 00 well be running a phone bank to take your donations. Even if youre out and about or would like to pitch in right now, you can still help as well. You can text the word playtime to 25543 or mail a check to the address you see on your screen to the homeless childrens play time project. The address is also on wusa9. Co oh, no, you cant open that. Been seven months since spring training started. It all comes down to one game tonight to determine the champion game seven of the world series. This is good, nick. Youve got to love saying that. It all comes down this is what you signed up to play the game for. Even the royals fans have said this. Look, im a do or die situation in game six. There will be a tomorrow and the fact is, basically now both sides will have to walk a tightrope without a net. This much we know. The home team has won each of the last nine games sevens in world series history. Advantage royals. Just last night they had their backs against the wall facing elimination in game six. Bottom of the second, they came out swinging. Bases loaded. An rbi single. Later in the day new pitcher, same result, lorenzo cain dropping one to shallow right center. The royals run away with game six 100. So it all comes down to game seven tonight at 8 00. Meanwhile also tonight the wizards tip off a new season in south beach. For once theyll open up a campaign as contenders on paper. To the court. Starting on the home floor of the miami heat, the time for pictures is over. Not quite the marquee matchup the nba had in mind originally obviously since miamis big three is now lebron jailless and washington without bradley beal for the next couple of weeks as he works his way back from a broken wrist. Theyre still the miami heat, guys who have won two championships the last couple of years. We take no team lightly. We know its going to be a good game. Theyll turn turnovers into quick points. So weve got to if we can keep them in the half court and play five on five and let our defense get set, we can be pretty solid. Last night it was all about the bling in san antonio. The spurs getting the championship rings, raising a banner before opening up against the dallas mavericks. Five with three to go. Chandler parsons cuts it to a twopoint game. Were tied up here at 98 a piece. Having a little vintage lieu witnesses i ask. Two of his 18 points makes it mavs plus two. The spurs not even phased. Just get it to tony parker who stops, drops a go ahead three ball here. Just flexing like a champion does. He had 23. San antonio would hold on 101 100. Monday night date in dallas may have been one of those games the redskins had circled on their calendars all year long but this sundays game against the vikings is one a number of protesters have been waiting for. Organizers in minnesota are promising the biggest protest yesterday against the redskins name coming up this weekend. Theyre planning for thousands of people to meet sunday morning for a onemile march to the stadium. Protest effort is led by the National Coalition against racism in sports and media. You know where redskins owner dan snyder stands on the subject. He has vowed never to change the teams name but this will certainly be in the headlines this weekend, something to look forward to. The tide keeps getting bigger. With the world series again, its guthrie out there for the royals. Look out tim hudson. He got roughed up against the oils last night. Royals last night. This is a rematch of game two or three. Advantage royals. Maybe the blue is really a predictorrer. Andrea predictor. Andrea picking sides over here. They want to weaken marylands gun safety laws. Even support letting suspects on the fbi terror watch list buy guns. On gun safety and terror, the nra is wrong. Hogan gets an a from the nra. On protecting maryland, we just cant trust him. It is 6 47 on this hump day and before you head out the door, will you need the umbrella . Lets hear from Howard Bernstein. I think mid to late afternoon, early evening there will be some showers crossing the region as a front pushes through. That front was already affecting us. More clouds today. Yesterday ahead of the front, we warmed to 80 degrees. 82 at dulles. Neither one of them a record but that 82, missed it by one at dulles. Today well stay in the 60s but the upper 60s should do it for the highs. Looking at doppler, this is what were tracking, this line of showers extending all the way from the deep parts of the south, albany, scranton and getting into western maryland and West Virginia. Most of the showers have been light to occasionally moderate ones. I think that will be the case around here thank. As we look closer at doppler 9000, theres the pennsylvania turnpike east of breezewood. Maybe carlisle is getting in tuned. Not too far from hagerstown now to the south and west around 5 22. Lighter showers. Heavier showers romney to cumberland back along the Garrett County, West Virginia boarder there. I just want to point out the lighter showers from paw paw to hancock, west of i81. Its moving north east. If it doesnt get hagerstown, probably only ten miles west if youre out that way youll be running into a little light rain shower activity the next couple of hours.
