of the airlines ferried them out. that's why you're not seeing many aircraft now. they did that in anticipation of the storm. >> once again they're looking at the radar. i imagine that's a big storm that moved across the midwest. we see flight cancellations from other airports last night. >> as you know this say storm that is not only just affecting philadelphia but it is affecting other cities first let's check in with sue for how much snow we're getting and really seeing so many varying conditions. it's happening, sue. >> as diane mentioned along the east coast we see the affects. norfolk virginia thunderstorms and new york seeing the same transition we're going to be experiencing here from rain to snow. so it's still in the process of happening here in philadelphia. look at the lightning showing up just now along the jersey shore. that's where it's only rain. temperatures are way too warm for snow at this time. eventually we'll see that cold air takeover and when the surface temperature drops enough snow will make it to the ground. that's what's happening. when you're in the storm the heavy snow clings to the trees and as steve mentioned transition happens quickly and then you get poor visibility and snow packed roads mean dangerous travel and it's all happening during the morning commute. we have visibility down to three miles at philly international three-quarters nile pots up to and half a mile allentown and foggy in lancaster with the snow fallin falling. winter storm warn continues here advisory ares to the south we expect lighter accumulations and wind advisory in effect for after the snow winds. winds pick up and gusts as high as 40 at tiles. future cast shows the transition continuing through the morning rush and when you start to get that snow it piles up quickly and you see the cold air taking over for everybody by 10:00. we're starting to see 10 a.m. the end of this storm which i mentioned earlier has sped up a bit officially to 456789 i think you're a knuckle head if you go faster than tha that. again weather conditions warrant how fast you go out there and but again when we have light volume like we have now because a lot of folks are taking the day off and schools closed therefore the light volume it's a tendency to go faster and we see accident here eb eastbound on the turnpike near morgantown and no would star start? 5:00. we're in edgemont township and working or way down west chester pike, delaware county, into delaware. so i have to say that right now, it's not so bad. a lot of people were worried quite frankly that because it was so much rain and sleet that it might be slick. but i can tell you mike seems to be going pretty okay through here. so far so good. it's not as sticky or slidey i think because it was rather gradual. there was not a chance for rain and sleet to freeze you on the roads. it happened so quickly it was actually a good thing rather than bad thing. so again we're in delaware county, edgemont township on west chester pike. back to you guys. >> thank you and thank you for an update on the schools. i did not know i got breaking news from jen you can get need glasses i'm getting up there i cannot see. scott williams is on old city. what are we seeing there, scott? >> conditions are changingelier we were dealing with rain now sleet. sleet has a beat it is tarting to collect on top of the trash can here. you can see a little accumulation of some of that sleet. so the colder air is improving in. temperatures are dropping. and shortly that sleet will "good day philadelphia" change over to rain. "good day philadelphia" continues in a few minutes. as pass hershey's miniatures. we pour 'em! we pass 'em! we pick 'em! delicious fun for everyone. hershey's miniatures are mine, yours, our chocolate. it is snowing. we've got it over much of our area, rain, in some others, so we're in full gear with our team coverage. we start it off with sue. >> so here is thousand goes it, goes rain, to sleet, to snow. you might be having one of those, or you might have already experienced all of those. but we are now in the periods where travel is going to be the most difficult. so, bob, if you can, avoid the roads, when you think now is the time? >> definitely now is the time just decide to stay put. here is live look at route 309. you're right, the rain to that sleet, and then the snow is going to give everyone a rough go here this morning. >> well we had a lot of school closings already. we just got this one coming in from roger. thank you for sending this in, interboro school also closed along with philly and so many others. >> looking at the screen, bottom of the screen, it is slowly moving across. we will have the latest school closings, there are a lot to go through. so you'll see right there on the bottom off you are screen. also fox29.com on our website. don't forget to share your photos, use hashtag fox 29. you're doing it this morning. >> thank you for sending them n we do appreciate it. it gives us good eyes what's going on different neighborhoods, downingtown, very heavy, wet and cold. let us know what neighborhood is where you're snapping these pictures, because it helps us to get an eye of what's happening. >> put some ham and eggs on that grill there and deliver? >> this is where we get to see a lot of people's patio furniture, take the picture right off the poor. >> quick and east. >> i get to see how many inches. >> good indication of how much it has piled up already. that's what's happening. once that transition happens, from the rain, to the sleet, to the snow, it starts piling up very quickly, because when it is rain, it is heavy rain, and that's what we're seeing here on radar. where you see the bright blue, where the snow is falling heavy. or sleet, as we transition, because the temperatures, at the surface, need little time to catch up because it was 66 degrees, in philadelphia, yesterday. we reached record high, some places made it to 70. so, because of the colder air moving in, the mild air that was already in place, we are seeing lightning, thunder, at the jersey shore. as we zoom in there, some pockets of heavy rain from cape may, all the way up to atlantic city, then we see the rain, the snow, i should say, that's been falling for hours already in mount pocono, easton, seeing the snow piling up. and looking at the camera in allentown and starting to see the snow accumulating, there as well. here in philadelphia, scott just mentioned, we go to him in just a second, transition from the rain to the sleet and it won't be long before we see the snow. then after everything ends, we will have wind advisory in effect, from noon until 6:00 p.m. that's important. because whatever falls is going to start blowing around the rest of the day. still, wet roadways here in philadelphia. now we're down to 37 degrees. if you have been with us for awhile, the temperatures has been dropping every hour. and the winds are picking up. that's the way it will be for the rest of the day. so freezing to the north of us, finally in the 30's here in philadelphia. and in wilmington. still in the 40's down toward the shore. we will see temperatures continue to fall throughout the day as the winds pick up. that's your planner for thursday. but scott, you're witnessing the transition. this is when travel is really tricky. >> absolutely, sue. we are just right on the cusp of that snow, to sleet, to rain trains action zone that you've been talking about. still dealing with rain even some sleet. so you can see, it is kind of accumulating here, on the sidewalks, so that's really what you will have to watch out for, eventually, not so much the main roads, really those untreated surfaces. so we're getting a little bit of the slushy sleet accumulation right now, as those temperatures continue to fall. so you can take a look right now at market street. the roads are pretty quiet. and clear. but take a look across the way. that's a tow truck, because we have a snow emergency in effect for the city of philadelphia. so they are towing some of the vehicles that are parked where they should not be parked this morning. so, just keep that in mind. once again, the roads are mainly wet. some of the sidewalks, starting to get a little icy glaze, with that sleet accumulating, as conditions continue to change pretty rapidly, but right now, it is a rain and sleet mix here in center city. road conditions, bob kelly have, been really varying across the area. >> yes, definitely, scott, depending where you begin, where you're waking up, and as you head out. live look at route 309. your county line road, where we have accidents in both directions, and i think we will start to see that again, rolling along, just wet, and then that quickly you hit the sleet line. and then you hit the snow line. here is a live look at the 42 freeway, again, just wet roads, but again, that change-over line, slowly moving over the river and into south jersey. you also want to be careful like down here in wilmington, in delaware, your bridges and overpasses have that tendency to freeze before the actual road surface. i just heard from septa. they made some adjustments this morning, already, on the market frankford line. they will not be running those supplemental buses as they have the past couple of days. just trains. all trains making all stops, allow yourselves some extra time, watch it, the platforms will be slippery, the steps for the buses will be slippery. watch for the bus detours through the neighborhoods, you know the typical spots, the airport and the warminster line, running with some delays out of the gate this morning. patco, running a snow schedule. trains operating every 15 minutes. and new jersey transit, they're running with some delays, watch for the bus delays, too, in the neighborhoods, but they're also going to cross-honor their tickets system-wide. karen, thomas, back to you. >> bob, thank you. 5:36. we saw that rain/sleet mix here in philadelphia, old city much different story up north. this is how it looks through our lens in reading. see the heavier accumulation as scott mentioned further north. >> we do have team coverage. reporters all over the delaware valley to show you what the conditions are like in your neck of the woods. steve keeley up there in bucks county. but first, let's start with jenny joyce. she in lehigh county, and they have a lot of snow coming down. victorian house, pretty as a picture. >> reporter: yes, my face is a little cold right now getting hit by the snowflakes, which are getting bigger, earlier i had said they were kind of thin. definitely picking up. there is salt truck going by, seen the salt and plow trucks, live along macarthur road here in whitehall township. unfortunately they can't come fast enough. you can hardly see the pavement here, along this main road. we're also here at a wawa, and we've been seeing the plow trucks come through, actually, there is a plow truck over that way. they were out here bright and early. we've been in this area since about 3:00 this morning, let's fee we can flag them down. hi, guys, how are you doing? >> how are you? >> good. you're live on fox 29 this morning. just want a sense whatever your job entails. snow pretty heavy all morning? >> yes, just keeping the places open, until it starts to slow down, then clean it up, spotless, curb to curb. >> how do you describe this type of snow? i know this is what you guys do. >> wet and heavy, yes, ma'am. >> what's your prediction? it will be a big up? >> i wouldn't say big. probably four to six, i would say, four to six-inches about. good to have snow. we need the work, you snow. >> yes, yes, so good, i'm glad. glad to hear that and i hope you guys have a good and safe day. >> you too. >> thanks so much. so definitely, four to six-inches definitely going to be enough snow, obviously, not to have school today. whitehall township school district closed, allentown school district closed, a lot of notifications of course about other school districts in the area, as women, karen, thomas? >> out there on the roadways, how has the driving been getting around? >> earlier it was definitely pretty rough. and you know what? i think it is getting bad again, like i said, when we showed macarthur road, one of the main roads here, in whitehall township, you can hardly see the pavement. so we were slipping and sliding. we were going well below the speed limit, which of course we advise people to do, obviously, you want to be careful out there. >> jenny, thank you. you mentioned conditions, they're changing quickly, across the region. >> so let's get to another one of our reporters steve keel any bucks county with the conditions there. it also looks like the snow is really switched over, really coming down, steve? >> reporter: always extra special when you are the second reporter, but you have to be up before the first reporter, and those goofy boxes, so you get to stand out in this stuff an extra five minutes. thanks for the extra question, too, thomas, a little bit more pain for me and greg, but thank you, because we need that. anyway look at the snow sticking to this tree. we start little serious here. this snow is really coming down. and it is coming sideways. so it is sticking to the tree. this is a little tree. so it is below the big power lines that you see behind it. but that's going to be the power problem later. sue is predicting as a lot of people are gusts as much as 40 . we only have an inch of snow right now, it is already plowable, as you can see here, in the parking lot where we're standing. that gives you a sense of how deep and how fast it is falling, at least couple of inches an hour, because we've been out less than an hour, and that's what we saw, blacktop when we got here, now plowable snow, less than an hour later. look at the road. this is route 611 easton road. bob kelly, knucklehead, is the kind way to describe a lot of the drivers. people are flying on these roads, that aren't plowed. we did see one truck coming by. didn't even have a plow. just trying to salt on the road there. but this road completely covered, the main drag, doesn't look like a lot of people are taking the day off. so, be ready for people riding in cars, like it is a summer day, and then also be ready for the people taking it extra slow and smart and don't be flying into the back of them while they're going slow. so looks like the weather prediction is right on the money, in two respects, thomas, karen, six to 12 inches, shortly possible, judging by what we have here, and six to 1200 mentions of quite frankly and literally by frederick it looks like we're on the way to that, as well today. so predicting both things pretty accurately so far. >> all right, steve. i have eight-part question for you, which may take up 20 minute here. if you just want to hang out. we'll check back in with you in a moment. >> i'll be headed out there, 20 minutes, you'll be seeing me out there with all of the questions, thank you, for your questions of course. >> and walking to the builds to go my car. so i'll be doing that, we will be out there throughout the morning for good day philadelphia. please stay with us, 5:41, if you are and cold snow coming down. >> so last might my kids were taking all of the ice, what are they doing? flushing it down the toilet, putting the spoons under their pillows and wearing their pajamas backward to have a snow day. >> yes? >> looks like it worked. it worked. >> for the day, and mom will be busy as we mentioned. we'll get a check on the latest weather conditions coming up in just a moment. live look at the radar, you saw it change quickly over the past hour, that line of rain/snow mix, sleet, moving further south. a live look this morning, still a rain event in the city and throughout, this is penn's landing, quickly going to change. starting to see some sleet. stay with us. by peggy lee playing ] [ goat bleat ] [ crow caws, music continues ] this is gonna be awesome! when it comes to buying a house... trulia knows the house is only half of it. and with 34 map overlays like playgrounds, demographics, schools, and more... you can find the right house and the right neighborhood for you. trulia. the house is only half of it. >> good morning, welcome back, county line road, upper state road, again, that change-over certainly occurred here, and that quickly, we've gone from wet roads, to snow covered roads. and just watch it. >> because, again, as we mentioned, light volume, a lot of the kids are off from school, so therefore, we've seen light volume out by the parent out there, and you have tendency to go little faster when there is not a lot of volume out there stopping, underneath this coating of snow, could be some black ice. because the rain quickly changed to sleet, and then the snow, as we rolled through the morning. speeds reduced all around the board, down to 45 miles an hour. accident on the pa turnpike, eastbound, at morgantown, we just got words after closure, i78 eastbound closed at exit 35. remember that valentine day storm? from a couple of years ago, with i78? was shut down for over a day and a half. and hundreds of people were stranded. the same area. so eastbound lanes closed along i78, you may want to use 222 as you're trying to get into allentown. dealing with rhett roads in south jersey, but look, n jt, waiting in the wings here, new jersey dot, basically a salt truck, and following the lines of what pennsylvania did, they couldn't put down the brine, they'll put down that salt, so that there is at least something on the road surface when the change-over occurs in south jersey from the rain to the sleet and then to the snow. here's a live look, mt. holly, new jersey, again, just some real heavy rain, and following the story line, that we've seen so far, the heavy rain kicks in, then the sleet, and then, bamm, that quick, we get hit with the snow. heard from septa. now, they don't have the repairs made on all of the trains yet obviously, but anticipated lighter than normal volume. they're just going to run the trains. no supplemental bus service, so all trains will be making all stops on the market frankford line. give yourselves plenty of extra time, depending upon with what means of transportation you'll used to. regional rails starting to pop with delays, the one media elwin line, running with two cars short today. patco, a snow schedule, trains every 15 minute, new jersey transit, they're cross-honoring their tickets system-wide. how much will we get? how long is it going to last? sue-be has the answer in 15 seconds. impacts today, it will be heavy wet snow, temperatures for all of us eventually in the 30's. we've been watching temperatures fall all morning, snow will clinic to trees and power lines, as the winds pick up, that could be a problem for some with possible power outages, we'll have to watch for that situation. but, here it is. the storm is here. it is affecting a lot of the east coast and in various ways, thunderstorms as we saw earlier at the jersey shore, and then here in philadelphia, we're in the midst of transitioning from rain to snow with sleet inbetween. and that's where travel is really tricky, but even with the rain travel is challenging, just look how heavy it is in salem county, new jersey, pocket of very heavy rain moving through up out to transition again to snow with visibility poor in the places where it is snowing heavily. so that's another travel challenge, that's why we keep asking you if it is at all possible. we know it is not possible for everybody. try to wait and do your trip later if you can. 36 degrees, now, in philadelphia. inch. down close to freezing, wildwood, still raining 45 degrees, and dover, winter storm warning continues until noon. so does the winter weather advisory. but then the winds advisory takes over after the snow ends, and we will see winds gusting as high as 40 miles an hour, as we look at the rest of this future cast, we see the snow taking over by about 9:00 everywhere, but with the storm speeding up, moving a little fast than we thought it would yesterday, snot going to have chance to pile up too much at the shore, and down in southern delaware, and we do see between ten and 11:00 the storm should leave philadelphia, and the snow tapers off, and then it lingers until noon, maybe 1:00 . and then that's it, unless you get a little bit of flurry later on in the day. so these are snowfall totals, very little at the shore, whole lot to the north of us, and they welcome it in the pocono mountains, here in philadelphia, along i95, probably anywhere between three and six-inches. back to you. >> once again all of the school closings, the bottom of your screen there, also philadelphia international airport reporting that most of the flights leaving today have been canceled. always best to check ahead. >> let's check in with delaware county right now, see what it is like. getting a lot of rain. any switch over? still rain, but looking little sleety, jen? deaf deaf -- >> reporter: definitely sleety. in the town of delaware county, i have to say coming through newtown square, a loft snow. but we want to show you media. where people are getting up, getting around, and but we are seeing that change over. now, here it is 32 degrees. but it is not really like a sleet. it is not real a hail. it is more on the rain side, even when you go on some of these side roads. you can see there hasn't really been any accumulation. and it is interesting, guys. you need to look at the fox 29 wet side. because a lot of the schools haven't called yet. but they are on our website. which i have found that looking around to see what is open, what is closed. so again go we are getting transition, i don't know if you can see it up toward the light. it is transition in media to more of snow blends. but it definitely isn't sticking as it comes to the roads. it is wet. so we have seen snow plows, kind of like dragging on the road. to make sure that no ice or any kind of like, you know, frozen water precipitation, sleet, kind of blends, can accumulate. they are doing pretty good job of that. but so far, precipitation is falling, like an icy, snowy, more rain mix. again, meet logically speaking, guys. >> undoubtedly, yes, the wintery mix that sue serio always talks. >> of course tracking first major snowstorm of the season. sue, scott, bob, all on deck, of course mike and alex will be joining you at the top of the hour. coming right back, stay with us. >> wintery blast hitting the delaware valley, we take a look outside at trenton, so many schools are closed, hundreds right now in this whole tri-state area. many in new jersey. let's take a look at some of your pictures you've been sending in. thank you so much. this one, you said, hashtag #fox29snowment quakertown, thanks for checking in, john, we appreciate that picture right there. also this one from rick. not so much in birdsboro yet. but certainly more on the way. keep sending your pictures, mike and alex, right back up with what you need to know to get up safely thon snow day. which sweater will mike bewaring? see in you about two minutes. giving people options based on their budget is pretty edgy... kind of like this look. i'm calling it the "name your price tool" phase. whatever. >> we have schools closed, emergency travel headaches, winter 2017 has arrived with significant snowfall expected throughout the area. >> from the lehigh valley to the delaware valley and beyond, our crews have the region covered this morning, with everything you need to know during the height of this storm. well good day everyone, it is february 9th, 2017. and yes this is our first, i guess you can call it, significant snowfall since the year started, 2017. we are so happy to be here today. good morning to you. it is 6:00 here. so i'm sure a loft are you wondering, since i'm here at the desk, i wonder what mike is
