you know, no jobs. >> reporter: there are surveillance cameras on around the school but investigators say they have yet to recover any video of the attack. meanwhile neighbors are trying to pull together. >> i think we just need heavier patrol in the area. once you call and report crime like this we'll have heavier patrolling but at this point we need something. something obviously. >> reporter: many parents of course alarmed after seeing police tape when they were dropping their kids off the school district of philadelphia did send an alert out to parents. meantime police have a vague description of the suspect. lucy? >> all right, thank you very much dave. problems continue on gloucester county highway after crash more than five hours ago. new jersey state police say crews are still cleaning up this wreck in the southbound of route 42 they haven't said how that tractor trailer ended up off the road. at least two vehicles are involved. police say one person went to the hospital. we do not know who or how badly hurt they are. troopers shut down the far right lane for most of the day. developing right now the search for a sophisticated burglary crew. this isn't your typical heist as you can see. these guys know what they're doing. working to get what they want. and they're not just using the cover of night. you saw pretty heavy duty equipment as well. >> police say it was not just money the group of burglars was after. fox 29's dave schratwieser joins us live from southwest detectives. dave, police hope the suspects flash she get away vehicle may help track them down. >> reporter: no doubt indeed. this crew is on quite a run iain. in fact they go after big cash, now they're going after prescription drugs and they drive a high-end suv worth around $65,000. now we'll show you video here. sparks were flying earlier this week at the broad and game pharmacy when this crew broke in, they used power cutting tools to try and cut into a safe and drug cases and they made off with prescription drugs. they bailed out before they got the cash. they used walkie-talkies and that sophisticated tools and that suv we're talking about. it's a jeep grand cherokee srt8 worth about $65,000. now, police tell us they may be involved in as many as eight separate crimes including atm robberies out here in southwest philadelphia earlier this summ summer. in which they hit 2:00 a.m. t's cut their way in with those sophisticated tools and made off with over $160,000 in cash. they quieted down for a couple of months and now it looks like they're back on a tear again. that robbery was on monday. lieutenant john walker from southwest detectives described this burglary crew. they're very good at what they're doing. they're getting into bank atm's along with pharmacies now. there's been a total three jobs up in northeast. one in our east division. theme out here in southwest division and one up in our northwest division the most recent. it look like they're operating an suv which appears to be a jeep srt8. they get out quickly them make quicken trees into the place. as they're in the places they know exactly what to go for want to get. atm jobs they were taking money. in the pharmacy jobs five at this point they're taking drugs and money. and they're getting out of the area rather quickly. >> reporter: now, again, they got away with $160,000 in those 2atm jobs out here in southwest. they got drugs and money from several of those other robberies and again the car that suv is a key here. if you know someone with a vehicle like that or you suspect they could be involved in this you should call southwest detectives or the philadelphia police hotline at 215686 tips. we'll have update on this investigation and more details coming up at six. iain. >> dave, thank you. >> philadelphia police are vet gating a deadly shooting in the city's fair hill neighbor. it happened overnight in the 2800 block of north fourth street. police say someone opened fire along the block hitting a man as well as several cars on the street. police arrived and find the man on the ground with several gunshot wounds to his chest. he was taken to temple hospital where he later died. police are still looking for the shooter. philadelphia police say they have the man who robbed a south philly dunkin' donuts. police say patrick fits morris robbed the store on packer park back in the early morning hours of july 6th. police say he paced outside the store before covering his head with a clear plastic bag. the tape those shows him going into the store armed with 95. he's now facing robbery and other related charges. 10 days and counseling until pope francis arrives in philadelphia. we know it's not going to be easy to get around philly during the visit. parking that's a whole other story. but today camden city officials just made a big announcement that may have some changes their plans about getting into philly. fox 29's karen hepp live along the ben franklin parkway where the setup for the papal weekend continues. good news, karen. >> reporter: absolutely. so good to have good news. check out the scene. that is a busy beehive down there. hundreds of workers setting up the stage right now that are doing all the security, the fencing, all of the wiring and the sound system. but this something clearly the people in camden think could have been handled maybe the roll out a little bit better they're concerned they may have scared some people away. all the people they expected on the buses. they were supposed to park in camden, they didn't fill those buses. now they're opening up the parking and they have a message specifically to jersey. come on down. they want you to see the pope. all of sudden there's loads of pope parking in camden. more than 8,000 spaces and they promise it's easy. just 30 bucks and you register at gateway to the pope and then you can walk over the bennie, ride patco or sail the ferry. >> the camden waterfront will be open for pre registered park pg of privately operated vehicles. again, i repeat the camden waterfront will be open. >> reporter: where did all these spaces come from. >> all the buses they thought would be parking here they never materialized. so they called an audible and opened them up to the public. now, you can even buy pope patco paces on the same day. big changes they hope will inspire folks to go. >> don't be discouraged from going. if you wanting to see the pope. don't let the roll out and confusion and anx discourage you. this is a 18 event for the region and we want as much people as possible to participate. >> reporter: as the stage is literally being set they're trying to generate excitement in philly, too torque get the message out that there's lots to do and most of the city will be open. >> i'm asking philadelphians who are not already joyously anticipating the arrival of pope francis to actually get excited ton get involved. >> every commissioner in the entire city lined up today to inspire confidence, commissioner ramsay says police will be working 12 hour shifts to keep every neighborhood safe. >> there's probably people out there concerned that too many resources are being drained off and we've compensated for that. 12-hour shifts we actually create add new shift. a power shift. that will run from 4:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. >> reporter: they want people to know the city is open for business. many many of the businesses are open. many of the things they feared might be closed or open. except for a city area the rest of the city is open. if you want to go to the park, the smith place house with your kids, the rec centers will be open, too. they want to people sure people know and don't miss out on history. lucy, back to you. >> don't want to, going to be amazing with all the people on the ben franklin parkway one company is making sure everyone stays connected. crown castle has been busy installing 37 of what's called cell nodes along the parkway in theory they'll let visitors act sis their wireless providers during the papal weekend and beyond hopefully it all works out. the nodes will also play a key role in other more pornographic e-mails from kane's office. kane's attorney only e-mails relating to government business have to be released. lawyers for are the inquirer are arguing those if are public records because it shows how employees use state time recent leases. the release of these e-mails rei sored in a wave of resignations and firings. >> another day that make it hard to complain in your fox 29 bank human at td bank. ♪ flash flooding now killed at least 18 people in utah and officials warn that number could climb. search and rescue crews have now found the bodies of several hikers in utah's zion national park and late summer rain is busting records and drought stricken california. first responders have been racing to rescue drivers trapped in flood water. the rain could help a little with the drought and also with the raging wildfires. back here at home, homeowners now have more time to challenge their super storm sandy flood claims. fema 30 day extension came just before today's deadline expired. the agency says more than 20,000 homeowners have asked for reviews. fema says it has so far approved more than 450 claims worth more than $7 million. >> jon stewart promising to kick butt toe 9/11 first responders as he leads a series of meetings aimed at extending health care aid fourths sands first responders ended by exposure to burning toxins at grandsire row. >> are we ready to get to work today. >> yeah. >> jon stewart is famous for mocking politicians than working with them. today he's taking his star power to capitol hill asking lawmakers to extent the act which provides health care to 9/11 first responders. many of whom became sick after working at ground zero. >> i can never repay the debt to the first responders who came down and brought stability and humanity, not just to lower manhattan but to all of new york city and to the entire country. >> as with any peace of legislation there are political road blocks to overcome. when the act was first passed republican lawmakers expressed concern about how much the federal government was going to have to pay. for an unknown number of victims with unknown illnesses but this time around lawmakers in favor of the extension say those concerns have been addressed. >> during the five years we've do you meaned it, we studied it we have 100% transparency. we can go back to our colleagues and say this program works. >> the drive is also bipartisan. the number of republicans joining democrats and calling for the extension but time is running out. with some provisions set to expire next month, >> pennsylvania's budget stalemate spilling into court. child welfare advocacy group is asking a court to order governor wolf's administration to release money for about 15,000 children in foster care. the pennsylvania council of children youth and family services says the budget impass is putting the youngest pennsylvanians at risk. the group's lawyer argues the governor can declare those services search which would then free up the money. when pope francis stops in philadelphia he's going to have a special escort. i'm talking about these new highway patrol motorcycles we got our first look at them tod today. there are 14 of them that will hit the highways later this month. the bikes first official appearance will be escorting the pope when he's in town. >> this papal visit is that and goes into what we do every day to make this city, you know, a great city. >> the new motorcycles were given to the city through money raised by the philadelphia police foundation. a two hour wait to tour a building along north broad street. it's not just any building. it's the divine lorraine mayor nutter helped break ground on the $44 million redevelopment of the property today. it was built back in 189 1894. 10 story structure on north broad one of the city's first high rises and the first racially integrated hotel in america. the divine lorraine closed in 1999. it's been vacant since then. it will be redeveloped into more than 100 homes and will include a restaurant and plenty of retail space. >> hugh cool is that. >> help for veterans on board the battleship new jersey hundreds of local veterans showed up at the camden waterfront today looking for jobs. the philadelphia veterans job initiative hosted this morning's career fair right on the famous battleship itself. vets got a chance to speak with folks from more than 40 companies. many in fields like health care and financial services. the veterans jobs initiative is hoping to find jobs for at least 2,000 local vets by 218. no mike trout rookie card but phillies fans will be getting their hands on something tonight no one else has. fans going to tonight' nationals game will get their hands on a commemorative pope francis rookie card. the team made the card to celebrate the pope's upcoming visit to the world meeting every families older front of the card picture of the pontiff. on the back like any card homemade clock to school. it all unfolded this week when a teacher at macarthur high school alerted officials about the device thinking it may have been a bomb. 14-year-old act hemmed in who's muslim is an engineering student who has won many awards for inventions. he says the incident has left him shaking up. >> i toll them it's a clock. and they told me why would you bring a clock to school? i was like to tell time. the officer was there's clocks here. clocks here. clocks around you everywhere. i told him i wanted to impress my teachers. so that i can get -- get a good setting i am with prison and faces more than 20 years of sex offender probation. police arreste arrested the gart valley middle school phys. ed. teacher last september. he pleaded no contest. he became familiar face after he and his wife started a lemon shot challenge to help their daughter and others battling cancer. rutgers head football coach kyle flood suspended for three games after contacting a faculty member about a player's academic status. the university president says flood e mailed a faculty member through a personal account and met with that faculty member off campus although he was warned it went against policy. the student's final grade in the course did not change. flood has also been fined $50,000. local college making big news today by doing almost unheard of. >> yes. coming clean about the cost to attend the school. imagine that. our bruce gordon is here now. this is an issue macing news all across the country. >> it sure is. we all know college costs are through the roof with tuition and room and board at private schools pushing in many cases topping $50,000 year. but in many cases, it's a phony number. maybe you've seen the ads at car dealership promising haggle free pricing no longer going to jack the sticker price just so you can haggle us down to the actual price. well, if it's good enough for car dealers, it's good enough for rosemont college. the announcement from school president dr. sharon hurst cause students by surprise. >> starting next school year, we are reducing sue tuition by 43%. (applause). >> reporter: before you get too excited a little context. until now, rosemont like most us colleges advertised a hefty sticker price for tuition and room and board around $46,000 a year. but few students actually paid that amount much the vast majority got grants and scholarships that dramatically lowered the price. in effect said hirsh. >> the price that colleges ties as their tuition price is not a real price. it's an artificial sticker price. >> reporter: so why ties the price of your figure? because colleges don't want to appear to be a discount operation. damages their prestigious in the marketplace. rosemont is basically saying it will no longer play the game. tuition and room and board will be cut so too will student aid. the net effect, the average student will see their bill drop by about 800 bucks a year. >> i was really shocked and really excited. i also was really really proud of the institution for coming out and saying we're not going to do this any more. we're going to have you guys pay the real price. >> when she said it was relief and then it was like pure joy. yes! this is awesome. >> reporter: rose montgomery is a private catholic institution of about 425 students. that is well below capacity. rose mon officials admit they're artificially high sticker price was scaring off prospective students. they're hoping a lower price that's real will put them back in the conversation. more than a dozen colleges around the country have taken the step. it will be interesting to see if more follow. iain. >> interesting indeed. bruce, thank you very much. one thing has been interesting is our weather. >> i love it. >> i know do you. >> this is the kind of weather i love. >> we have the cool starts. you were saying you had a jacket on early this morning. >> yes. >> typical iain. >> dip into the 70s a bit nip tee out. >> light jacket. >> it warmed up rapidly that. dry air heats up rapidly. high today's have been in the mid even upper 80s. look at the numbers right now. really comfortable. we have blue skies, high pressure still in control. 85 degrees right now. but look at the low humidity at 30% and the winds are calm so no problem if's you're stepping outdoors. take look at the satellite/radar across the area. that high pressure, it's still in control. look at the rainfall well to the south in sections of florida. and then well off to the west, that's a weekend front will will drop our temperatures and maybe increase a spotty shower chance. but we'll zoom in right now the philadelphia international airport you can see as we take a look at center city we have blue skies out there. so it's really nice and still pretty comfortable if you're stepping outdoors. 82 degrees right now in atlantic city. 82 in pottstown. we have 77 degrees in the pocono mountains. 84 degrees right now in wilmington. so if you're headed out to the ballpark, it's going to be nice evening for baseball. low humidity, 79 degrees by first pitch and winds will be light out of the west southwest at about 5 miles per hour. so as we take a look at the temperatures, you can see low 80s baltimore. 81 in raleigh and the extreme heat 90-degree temperatures right now in dallas as well as wichita so we'll continue to tap into some of that over the next several days. low temperatures when you wake up tomorrow morning, not quite as chilly as prior nights. we're looking at 60 bensalem as well as physical a couple of 50s once you move north and west. but headed into sections of south jersey, we're looking at low to mid 60s for the overnig overnight. 64 millville. 62 degrees in dover with that up tick in the temperatures. the tropics still trying to get active. we have a new tropical depression nine well out into the open waters of the atlantic and another disturbance behind that. so really two areas to watch. the spaghetti plots try to develop those systems perhaps into ida or joaquin the next names up on the list. but you can see they'll stay well out into the open waters of the atlantic basin. weather authority seven day forecast showing you tomorrow it's going to be another 10. 87 degrees will be the high temperature. so actually above average for this time of year. 86 on friday. 86 degrees on your saturday. that front moves through increasing the clouds. cooler temperatures sunday maybe a spotty shower but the front looks moisture starved. early next week turning cloudy, cooler, fall officially arrives on wednesday. maybe a shower chance. closer look at that forecast sunday at the linc you can see a mild kick off. tailgating looks good. turning cooler by fourth quarter temperatures around 70 but just really all in all great football weather, and then looking ahead beyond that, the pope in philly. here's a forecast preview. everyone is interested in the weather. it looks like it will be partly sunny we'll probably be in between systems so there could be a slight chance of a few showers but high temperatures will be in the mid 70s. overnight lows in the mid 50s. >> i'll need a coat. >> we'll be down on the parkway with the masses at the mass. so we're hoping for real good weather. >> yeah. >> i'll have a coat. >> 50s i got to have a coat. >> all right. thanks scott. >> something in the air could be making you sick. at least according to a new study tonight. >> why it makes them even more dangerous much the georgia woman going to the same church for 92 years, uh-uh, not any more. why it just banned the 103-year-old from worship. coming all new at six if you've been showing up early park tag local school to pick up your kids that won't be an option for you any more. while you'll have to come up with another plan. doug, we have the results, but first, we have a very special guest. come on out, flo! [phone ringing] but a little less crazy. we're doing everything we can to give you the best experience possible. because we should fit into your life. not the other way around. ♪ she was part of a tragedy to rock the nation last month and tonight she is sharing her sto story. vicky gardner was the sole survivor that horrific shooting that unfollowed on life television. she recounts those terrifying moments in her first interview since the attack. she was being interviewed in virginia last month when a gunman ambushed reporter allison parker and cameraman adam ward. gardner explained what she did after the shooter opened fire. >> i was just concentrating on being so still that he wouldn't shoot me again and then it was quiet and it was early in the morning and there really wasn't anyone around. not understanding quiet, um, this had happened live. it didn't register for me. >> vicky was shot in the back and lost a kidney. the gunman later took his own life while being chased by police. >> to your health now, what your children eat every day. new report finds that what most eat nearly every single day could be setting them up for some huge health problems. our joyce evans in the newsroom with those details. actually she's here next to me. and today's other big stories. >> hi joyce. >> hi lucy. a third of american children are eating fast food on any given day. that according to new report from an agency that's part of the centers for disease control and prevention. the cdc. guess what? it gets worse. that same report says kids actually get 12% of the calories they eat from fast food. researchers found young people between ages 12 and 19 were least likely to eat fresh home cooked meals and doctors say kids who consume fast food consumed more calories there and they're getting less nutritional value. which experts say is one of the biggest reasons behind america's epp dim mcof childhood obesity. meantime breathing in air pollution could mean you'll die sooner. researchers just studied more than a half a million american men and they found that those who breathed in more than of the fine particles in the air which are often made up of the toxic chemicals were at a higher risk for heart disease. doctors say a big problem here is that the most dangerous stuff in the air is in the particles small enough to get passed your body's natural defenses. you can read about that study in the journal environmental health perspective. and chances are you've been -- spend way too much time on your phone. so much so, that you could be hurting your children. child health education specialists in the uk are now urging parents to make family time a priority. that means, not open looking down at your phone. not even if you get a text. as we know, kids imitate their parents, and they could learn that the phone screen is more deserving of their attention than anything or anybody else. now the experts say, you should give your kids the gift of boredom. so that they can learn how to enter taken themselves and that will make for happier, better adjusted adults. lucy and iain -- >> good advice. >> i used to make card houses and do all kinds of things to keep myself busy. >> yeah. >> and look at you. >> i'm so well adjusted. >> as she's on her phone. (laughter). >> pope francis' visit now just 10 days away. maybe a good time to take a closer look at a fascinating journey that took a jesuit from the slums of south america to the pinnacle of religion leadership. bruce gordon takes look by the man name by a billion catholics around the world as papa francesca. >> reporter: those lucky enough to experience a weekly papal audience in saint peter's square get up close look at the man who many believe has reinvigorated the catholic church around the world. pope francis is a very special if unlikely leader. ♪ >> i'm not even catholic. i really like him because he's real down to earth. ooh for the common people. >> very generous, very modern. >> that's the reason why the people like him so much. >> just his ability to understand people and, you know, being able to see what -- why people are suffering. >> reporter: young priest known as jorge ministered to his flock in the slums of bun notice heiress argentina. ultimately named archbishop later cardinal but says papal chronic rocco palma the shepherd never lost the smell of his sheep. >> on his days off he would get on the bus and go down to the slums. everybody knew him as padre. >> reporter: in february of 2013, pope benedict xvith shock the world by announcing his resignation. >> it's very startling. >> i'm as shocked and as startled as all of you. >> reporter: us precedented move that left the college of cardinals scrambling to name a successor. now 76 years old pope francis was preparing for retirement at his apartment all pick out. >> it will be interesting. >> father daniel joyce with the office of mission at st. joseph's university. >> that was his last act as a bishop. he submitted his resignation. he pack very little. he didn't bring his new shoes, and he had planned on going back and fading into owe live i don't know, you know, anonymity as an a retired archbishop and cardinal. >> reporter: but faith and his physical low cardinals had a different path in mind. on march 13th, 2013, he was voted the first ever jesuit pope and the first non european to hold the position in more than 1200 years. he chose the name francis to honor the saint of the a sissy. it quickly became clear francis was not about to change his humble, frugal ways. >> one of the first calls he made was to his paper boy just saying, okay, i've been elected pope. you go the to cut off my subscription to the newspaper. and you know the sense of -- >> true story. >> true story. >> reporter: his leck came as a surprise to many but in retrospect says palmo it made sense. francis he says was brought in to reform the vatican. to take it back from the bureaucrats who run it unchecked for so long. and he was already a much needed evangelical witness but the credibility to reintroduce the gospel to a western world that had grown apathetic. fans of francis quickly noticed his unique style. >> i admire the way he approaches people and how he shows friendly less and humili humility. >> reporter: as for substance, papal pronouncements hot button issues like gay marriage, divorce, even abortion have led some to believe francis is taking the church in a more liberal direct. our experts insist he is merely eliminating the traditional finger wagging over those issu issues. >> saying teaching of the church is clear. and i am a sign of the church. does not negate your responsibility to be there for somebody. one term francis uses often is accompaniment much the church is called to accompany people whatever they're situation. >> he's an excellent pastoral thee low january. it's not about theology and ideas it's about ideas that apply to people's lives. >> reporter: just week after the world meeting of families here in philadelphia, bishops from all over the world including our own archbishop chaput will meet to discuss family issues. sexuality, divorce, remarriage. pope francis will, of course, have the last word on all of these subjects. many admirer hope whatever francis decides policy will be mixed with compassion. >> the pope is the best. i really a tour him. >> reporter: expect nothing less from humble man who once stooped to help the lowest of his brother now carries the hopes, dreams and prayers of a billion catholics on his shoulders. bruce gordon fox 29 news. >> what a journey. afraid of heights?
