♪ >> live from center city in philadelphia this is fox 29 news at 10:00. new questions about safety tonight after two deadly crashes in one day on the same road less than mile apart. good evening, i'm iain page. >> i'm lucy noland. when it comes to getting drivers to slow down, police say their hands are tied. fox 29's chris o'connell is live along route 1 in upper darby tonight. this is clearly a dangerous situation. chris? >> reporter: lucy one of the most heavily traveled roads in delaware county, but lately, township line road has become one of the deadliest. two fatal crashes in less than 24 hours has local police here begging for help. it looks and sounds more like a race track. >> it's constant. um and down. people do fief tearing 60. >> reporter: from night to day it's all the same along township line road in upper darby. car after car they speed by the speedway gas station where you still see the evidence where motorcyclist was killed yesterday. >> it's almost like the blue route. >> reporter: dave o'connell avoids route one at all costs. >> actually a lot times i don't take this road because of the congestion and a lot of the speed. >> reporter: speed limit is 35 but you'd be hard pressed to find anyone going under 45. and if you're walking, go at your own risk. >> you have to be energized bunny rabbit, road runner. that's the only way you'll get a cross. >> reporter: skyfox was over two fatal accidents win half mile of each other in less than 24 hours. 69-year-old man was struck and killed by another driver and a 27-year-old motorcyclist who slammed into a pole both crashes speed was a factor. >> that township line is a speedway. >> reporter: upper darby police superintendent mike chitwood would like to have officers out busting speeders along route one but he can't. under pennsylvania state law, municipal departments like upper darby are not allowed to use speed radar guns. only state police, philadelphia and pittsburgh police officers can use those guns. >> i cannot understand why we're the only state in the country that doesn't use radar. doesn't allow municipal police departments other than philadelphia and pittsburgh. >> reporter: well, in pennsylvania, average of 550 people are killed because of speed related crashes. that is way above the national average. so many in pennsylvania law enforcement are hoping to change that legislation. hoping to put radar guns in the hands of local police officers and hopefully save some of those lives. lucy. >> all right, thank you very much, chris. hope they can. on your radar, next heat wave is settling in. looking live at allentown after hitting higher than 90 degrees today. you know what, it's only going to get hotter. people enjoying a slight cool down in center city tonight. we're still hovering right around 80 degrees. kathy orr is here and kathy, we have got several days of heat ahead. this will be heat wave number seven. >> seven. >> who's count, right? >> we all are. >> yeah, right. today we're talking about temperatures that sored above 90 to 91 degrees. that's 10 degrees above normal. thursday, friday, saturday temperatures staying quite hot. temperatures will be riding once again with the heat index over 100 and we're talking about over 40 days of 90-degree temperatures this year. right now in philadelphia, 79. 73 in allentown. 65 in the poconos. but we'll climb back again tomorrow. you can see some showers to our west. they will stay to the west. we day dry but increasingly more humid that's why heat advisory posted for good part of the region. it will feel like it's around 102 tomorrow afternoon as we advance a future feels like you can see how the numbers rise with the heat and humidity tomorrow. in philadelphia by the afternoon it will feel like 101. 102 degrees the same in trenton the same in wilmington, millville, even in dover, we are going to be seeing that sultry heat. coming up we'll talk more about the heat wave. how long it will last. read log go home early for the rest of the week. the district announced southwest, southern, northwest and northeast middle schools will let students out at 12:15 tomorrow and friday. the same in trenton. students and staff in the city's public schools went home early today and will continue to do so for the rest of the week. we have all the information on our website just go to fox29.c fox29.com. police are hard at work tonight trying to put a stop to a string of robberies in northeast philadelphia. since the beginning of this year, investigators say there have been dozens of burglaries and robberies many of them at gun point. fox 29's dave schratwieser is live at philadelphia police headquarters. dave, police say all these crimes are targeting those in the asian community. >> reporter: no doubt about that, iain. in fact members of the asian community are on edge after a series of nearly 80 crimes against them since january. some of them have been roughed up and robbed. police have been making arrests, but the crimes continue. >> pulled out gun and slammed my dad against the wall. >> reporter: his father had never forget last sunday night three men with guns trailed him into a home he owns on bridge street in the northeast. they threatened him at gun point and robbed him. >> they took his phone, wallet, car keys and they just left after that. >> reporter: did they take the car. >> they took the car. >> reporter: robbery part of zero receives gun point robberies and burglaries spread across northeast phil until recent months. all of them targeting members of the asian community. >> i think it's a quick way to get quick cash and quick money. >> reporter: police say since january, crimes against the asian community in the northeast have escalated. 38 burglaries, 13 gun point robberies and another 28 robberies by force. >> now, it's becoming more of a pattern that us asians are being targeted in these crime related incidents. >> reporter: ivan so says his family knows several recent victims of these crimes much his father is still shaken. >> he's definitely afraid to leave the house at night and afraid to go places where he's forced to be alone. >> reporter: investigators say they've been handing out flyers in neighborhoods where the crimes have been committed. trying to get the public to be more careful. >> we're trig to make in roads into the community and build a rapport and trust with them. >> as long as people know, as long as people are more careful, they know how to combat the situation. >> reporter: now, some of the victims have been tied up and attacked. police tell us they don't believe this is the work of one group. more like several groups and they continue to look for surveillance video to help track them down. lucy. >> hopefully do so quickly, thank you dave. new tonight philadelphia police made the arrest in the arrest of a -- of murder shot and killed in front of his young son. police arrested 28-year-old muhammed johnson the man who shot 29-year-old pierre, in front of the community center in haverford. he have worked there and was leaving the building with his 12-year-old son when the shot rang out. prosecutors have charged johnson with murder. >> you decide 2016 the race for the white house rolling through philadelphia today. donald trump in town to talk national security. the disarray than ever before, not even close. had we done nothing, we would have been in far better position. >> reporter: a new monmouth university poll shows what most of the old polls have shown. trump trailing hillary clinton in pennsylvania. by 8% taj points in this survey. four years ago, president obama road huge margins among minority voters to win big in philadelphia. big enough to overcome losses in the rest of the state. the monmouth polls clinton leading trump among black, hispanic and asian voters 90% to five. we said that sentiment first hand. >> a lot of his ideals are very contrary to my own beliefs. >> i think some of his comments are at times different minorities and ethnic groups. >> to me he's a whole lot of uneasiness of everyone. >> reporter: the head of the donald trump as he arrived. a couple of dozens people lined the streets holding signs challenging the candidate on everything from climate change to his failed casinos in atlantic city. also, voicing their opposition to a trump presidency. a group of veterans from pennsylvania, they called trump's ideas dangerous. hillary clinton was off the campaign trail today. but both she and trump participate delegate to the democratic national convention has turned himself in for indecent assault. philadelphia district attorney's office says walter weeks garnet valley assaulted a fellow delegate at a center city hotel during the convention. now the victim went public on social media when she felt the investigation just did not go far enough. well, today the da's office announced the charges. police tell us the suspect walked right into the police department and as you said made a stunning confession that led them right to the body. >> i'm a little shocked actually the. >> reporter: neighbors came out of the their sellersville apartment to news of a brutal crime scene right in their building. police say 34-year-old damien walker kill his 62-year-old neighbor inside her apartment. >> i've spoke with damien many, many times, always nice, pleasant, happy. you know, helpful. just didn't expect it at all. >> reporter: according to the bucks county district attorney's office tuesday night walker went to the norristown police department and told them he'd killed his neighbor. police say he told them he had been using meth. they went to the apartment and found the woman dead. >> there was i guess a crime scene van out there, um, lights flashing in my room. couldn't get no sleep. just lot of, arc lot of cops. >> reporter: richard white lives a floor above where it happened. >> it's very surprising around here because it's a very quiet neighborhood. and i've seen him outside very nice -- very good guy. nice. nice to all his neighbors. >> reporter: neighbors say both the victim and suspect were cordial to each other in the past. police have not said what happened in the moments leading up to the murder or how the woman was killed. >> i have no clue just thinking about it. >> reporter: back here live, police have not released the victim's namely meanwhile the suspect is being held without bail. lucy, back to you. >> thank you shawnette. family members on a desperate hunt for missing young woman. the family 21-year-old lindsay piccone reported her missing last night and that is when a search began in newtown. they found her car there. but authorities say this search covers a wide area and her family is pleading for any and all help. >> lindsay, if you're listening, you are so loved. your parents love you so much more than i could ever begin to express. all of your family and friends are here with them helping search for you. we love you and desperately want to bring you home. please call us. we aren't giving up until we find you. >> call bucks county emergency services if you think you have seen lindsay piccone or know where she is. two workers are recovering from injuries after an explosion in atlantic county, new jersey. skyfox over the egg harbor township schools. transportation center this afternoon much that's where police tell us that two workers were cutting an underground diesel tank when it exploded. one of those workers, 2984 old joseph palmiero, was burn on the right side of his body. he is in atlantic care regional medical center. another man had minor injuries. >> prosecutors in atlantic county charged somers point man with murder. they say he opened fire inside an atlantic city store and killed a man. they say 55-year-old louis maze not walk into the store last thursday and shot and killed 26-year-old christopher rah mayor row. he shot himself. niece critical condition. no word on motive. in chester county police have a person of interest after a rash of vehicles were targeted overnight. police say the group was highly organized and the thefts had one thing in common that made the victims easy targets. fox twin's karen hepp explains. >> reporter: gretchen barnes had to bring a locksmith in after thieves stole her mini van right out of her driveway. she's got five kids. her husband is out of town but she has the best attitude. she is just grateful they dumped her car seat and papers a few blocks it way. >> they did have conscious. i had bunch of paper work my one son is in speech therapy and they bundled it altogether and put it in wholefoods bag. (laughter). >> they do have a conscience i guess. >> reporter: gretchen admits she did leave the kids inside. hers was the only vehicle stolen but police say more than two dozen other unlocked cars were hit overnight in the village of berwyn. >> they were fairly organized. where they came from, i can't say for sure yet, but, you know, it seems to be more than just your run of the mill kids running through the neighborhood. >> reporter: so many cars were broken into, neighbors began immediately e-mailing their stories trying to figure out what wound up where if at all. >> anything that could be opened was opened and all the contents were strewn all over. um, i was lucky. i only lost some change. >> i looked through my son's gear we have all his baseball stuff and bats can be expensive and i noticed one of his bats was gone. >> most of the other stuff they didn't really touch. we found out later that our bat is down the street at our neighbor's house. >> reporter: bat over here. car seat over there. and a lot of sense of security everywhere. the big take away on all of this no matter where you are or where you live, it's a good idea to lock your doors. if you have any information, please call the easttown township police. from devon, i'm karen hepp, fox 29 news. an elderly veteran tacked on walk. beaten with his own walker. what he says the guy asked him right before he pounced. back window of a brand new police car smashed. cops say the teen used a toilet seat to damage it and what he did next that made it so easy for police to find him. new technology to make sure people are not getting a free pass into disney. what the happiest place on earth now wants your toddler to do before they walk in. >> your toddler? >> sir, i can't -- >> you can tell me about it. >> i can set up a meeting with you. >> reporter: sexual harrah's many claim was made by this woman evelyn nunez the former chief academic and superintendent of schools for all of the aspira's philadelphia charters. nunez now the principal of the school district louis elkin elementary filed a charge of discrimination with the pennsylvania human relations and equal employment opportunity commission. she charged she was a victim of sex discrimination and retaliation and claimed it was continuous. nunez single at the time said she had a one night only romance with calderone and she was was immediately embarrassed by it. in the 26-page document nunez claims she was demoted because i rejected the on-going sexual advances of calderone. refused to allow him to talk about his on-going sexual conquests of teachers, students and parents refused to hire as teacher a woman he had sexual designs on and reported some of calderone's actions to the board of trustees. court records show in february of 2013 nunez sued aspira under the whistleblower protect act. documents show the case was settled in june of that year. nunez's attorney patricia pierce says she is barred from talking about the settlement and he will frayed dough car derone is tide tight lipped. >> did you sexually harrah's evelyn nunez. >> can we set up a meeting. >> i've asked for meeting store final with kevin feeley. >> we discover the big money payout in court document. it turns out as spear rah failed to pay its insurance company a $25,000 fee so the insurer sued them for it. in that suit, the large sum asp. ia paid nunez is stated right here. the insurance company national union fire insurance of pittsburgh writes that nunez accused calderone and his management team of sexual harrah's many and retaliation. it claims it put out 151 grand in legal fees and costs in defense of the suit and write it paid miss nunez on bee of had a of aspira and its officers the sum of $350,000. to settle the claim. we asked ceo calderon if he told school district leaders known as the school reform commission or src about the big payout. >> did you disclose to the src that you settle add $350,000 sexual harassment claim. >> we can set up a meeting. >> why do you need to have meeting with your lawyer? you know what this is. >> 350 grand. are you startled by that amount? >> yes, i am. >> it's shocking that that type of activity is going on in a school that serves the communi community. >> reporter: lisa, is a member of alliance for philadelphia public schools. a watch dog citizens group for the schools and the src. not only was she stunned by the money, she was very concerned that the philadelphia school district says charter schools have no obligation to tell the district about legal settlements and they don't. >> the taxpayers and the community that these schools are supposed to be serving have a right to know what their money is being spent on and what the climate of the school is and how its employees are being treat isn't there why would you settle such a claim if it didn't happen?
