Lawrence Catholic Church in tampa. Were bringing in Alcides Segui to talk about monsignor. What kind of a man he was. Good morning, alcides. Good morning to you. So im a parishioner at st. Lawrence. I have to tell you that, doing a story about monsignor higgins is privilege. Because thats type of man he was. He was an incredible, incredible person. Just selfless only cared about those around him. And it showed from the minute that you introduce yourself him. Because, thats what he was. Thats, thats what he stood for. Its hard to explain the type of person that monsignor higgins was. But if i could, i mean im definitely going to try. His life was dedicated to st. Lawrence. The families of st. Lawrence as well. From through the years he has changed the lives of so many people. He could walk into a room, and you would know right away that he walked in. Because everyone would just go about he had some amazing story. So i want to talk to you a little bit about the life that he lived. Higgins served pastor back in 1958 and 200 seven. It was longing tenure of any priest in st. Pete diocese. Back in 2007, he retired as pastor of st. Lawrence. He still had his hands at the church. Very much so. Details of the funeral by the way or still in the works. But were hearing it will be some time next week. Catholic priest back in 1953 in ireland. A short time after he came to florida st. Augustine then eventually he made his way here to tampa. The archbishop at the time told higgins, hey im going to give you some property on corner i want you to build church out there. And sure enough he did. He built an Incredible Church at st. Lawrence catholic parish. One biggest here in diocese and so many people, again, go to from the school that currently sits there. Where hundreds of students have graduated, hundreds of students are enrolled now thousands graduated through year. Live look a st. Lawrence catholic parish. Mass going on right now. It will be completed about 9 30 this morning as well. There is a scheduled News Conference at 12 oclock this afternoon. Because again, a lot of media outlets, they want to know what happened and they want to celebrate his life because again so many people know who monsignor higgins is. He served oh on countless which nonprofits. He helped found the Judeo Christian clinic helping low income families. He has has been on Crisis Center of tampa bay. He wont countless awards just an incredible man. His funeral will be next week. From what we understand, law remarks ive been, helping out with funeral arrangements as best as i can because church expect. The rough estimates to give everyone an idea, 1800 families what is they are expecting. For next week. Were talking dignitaries from across bay area. Pam i oh or ra. Bob buckhorn. Mayors just from the, decades that have been here in tampa bay. That will be heavily involved. And of course we will have state lawmakers as well. Heavy hearts. No doubt. Bcause his health has been declining through the last couple of months. Especial t weeks. In fact he went to hospice just recently. But i will tell you that he was ready. He was ready to go. And for, to say that for, for monsignor higgins is difficult. Because hes a fighter. He is an absolute fighter. He does not want to think about that at all. But you know the last, the last couple of days he knew that it was time. And, and he was he was ready to accept his fate. And you know hes a hes a follower of jesus christ. So of course were going to continue our coverage here with monsignor higgins. We hope to have lot more fox 13 news at noon. We will speak to pastor moore who is current pastor st. Lawrence to get a better idea what game plan will be. And again to celebrate his life. He deserved that. Back to you. Hopefully, the fact of what you mentioned that is he was ready to go go, that gives some peace and comfort to the people who know and love him. Absolutely. Yeah. All right. We will look for that News Conference on the fox 13 news at noon with linda, thank you, alcides. Alcides. Developing this more than Citrus County deputies are gathering evidence after they say a man vandalized the old courthouse there. Mans now in custody. Officials say he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or another substance. Building was closed while deputies convinced man to come down from the roof of the building. And other big story that we have be reporting all morning long zika. Governor scott is hosting another round table discussion with local authorities. In tampa. 9 30. Well have more on this on our website and on the fox 13 news at noon. All of this because this first case of nontravel related zika has been reported in Pinellas County. And parents are worried. School district says they are working with Health Officials already a policy in place for schools to deal with mosquito control. Teachers will also share information with students from the governor, governors teachers toolkit at this point recess will not be affected. They are also parents to spray their childrens skin ask clothing within secretary repellent before coming to school. By far the people most concerned with this right now the People Living in fear are pregnant women. Weve heard that zika causes the fetus to develop microcephaly. Now the situation where brain is no the fully developed. It horrific. But now were learning more about what happens to the brains of these babies when zika is radiology they released brain scans of infants and fetuses affected by zika and what they found was even worse than originally thought. And have look here while pictures of children with microcephaly are difficult to look at its whats inside the brain that has the medical profession very concerned. They found that even if the child does not appear to have microcephaly in the beginning, and they look normal, they could still have profound difficulties as they grow. At issue is virus certain portions of the brain. Were not going to go into specific scientific terms but a disturbs the communication between right and left hemispheres of brain so they cannot communicate with each other. Also attacks another portion of the brain, that can controls movement. And balance and speech. And finally, zika is found in a third part of brain that controls critical thinking, and emotions. But scientist think they have abnormalities are from zika or not. When an infection happens calcium deposits in the brain and look at these scans here, with zika, it deposits between the gray and the white matter in the brain. That means that its tough to tell whether the infection is from zika or not. And so all of this brings us to funding fight in congress right now. What are congressional leaders doing about this . We brought in fox 13 Political EditorCraig Patrick to talk us to by phone, good morning to you, craig. Good morning, how a we know it was late night for you. So so we thank you for being here. For weeks leading congressional recess Governor Scott was begging for federal funding to fight zika and nothing, no up or down vote before they left. What is the hold up . Gridlock in politics. Plain and simple. You have the president going back to february of this year, saying that he needed 1. 9 billion in emergency funds. You had push back from republicans that said wait a give us more specifics a back and forth on this. Then republicans turned around with bill for 1. 1 billion. They loaded it with an other things that would weaken environmental restrictions like reducing funding for planned parenthood. Funding parts of obamacare. Reversing a ban confederate flags. In effect they went on break and not coming back you look from outside this politics at its worst to fund a billion dollars in Zika Research or two billion and well go back to planned parent hoot issue. That seems to be the real Sticking Point here. The, the republican pitch here. House pitch was to specifically prevent funding. Restrict it. Strip it, for planned parenthood. The bill that was proposed by spending why can they not go ahead and forward or front the billion dollars to fund it . Because right now critical aefrj is being held up. Vaccinations and these kinds of Clinical Trials are being held up as a result of all of this. They could. They could easily do it. Answer is its an Election Year and both sides are dug in they do not want to where youre seeing a difference in washington ask across the nation is compard to florida, is that democrats and republicans Minor Discrepancies you really have marco rubio, republican, you bill nelson democrat. Rick scott republican. Republican and democrats alike in delegation of house all saying the same thing. We need action from congress. And bill nelson said look, if you have leadership in congress from florida, instead of say with wisconsin or kentucky, maybe it might be a different story. But because it has not affected other states to the extent it democrats and republicans on the same page elsewhere. And thats a problem for florida. And of course across the nation as well. You know infuriating seven babies have been born with microcephaly here in u. S. We know most of them have not strived congressman david jol called for congressional leaders to return for an emergency session. What likelihood of i think its unlikely i think if they would have returned i think they would have done it. Again, this is a huge story. Deeply tub florida but im not sure that leadership in other parts of the country are into it. So, youre looking a september 6th the in all probability. But think about this, they come back to work september 6th guess what happens at the end of the month they go on break there arent that many work days left. So chances of them being able to get something done next month may not be much better than where weve been going back to february this year. Thats the troubling news for sure. All right. Weve got leave it there thank you so much. We you always help us understand awe, thank you. Russell. Investigators in st. What we want to do change that put it more in power of people so we can produce our own electricity and change policies around it and make solar energy for homes and businesses more affordable. Solar advocates say voting yes on amendment 4 would do that that. If somebody wants to reduce their expenses, reduce their electric bill, they shouldnt be burdened with taxes.
