chris: the change in the forecast is the rain came in on schedule. the bulk of it has moved out. you can see that on doppler. we still have rain around. the heaviest rain that came through midday is already north and east as the moisture got cut off more quickly thanks to a disturbance over the gulf of mexico. not much happening around the triangle now. there are some rains off to the west. this is the widespread rain that came through rapidly now shifting east. we are left with scattered light rain to the west lifting to the northeast. you will need the umbrella this evening. here comes the rain on schedule. look at how it caps off hours before we thought it would. still some rain to the west. we will see scattered rain through the evening. i think this is a little it will be scattered and breezy at times. we may see gusts up to 35 or 40 across the region. have a nice day tomorrow. if you like mild temperatures, you will want to make the most early next week. details coming up. tomorrow. we are the team to turn to for updates. whether-related problems. you just saw one of the tree on the power line. with our weather app, you will be the first to know about watches or warnings. you can join our weather team by snapping pictures and taking video in your neighborhood and report it to us. heather: new chilling 911 calls released in the shooting of a mother at a local hair salon. kevin powell, jr., is charged was shooting his mom inside the in mccall, he denies he was near the crime scene. nicole carr is with new details. nicole: this is the conversation we are hearing kevin have with whoever called 911. while a customer and employee were in the back of the salon, dee burch was at the front of the salon. they heard a gunshot. in the call, they are asking where kevin powell was when his mother was shot. you are about to hear he denies knowing who was in the salon. >> do we know where the person is who shot the victim? >> she is on the floor! >> where is the person who shot him? >> we don't know. we don't know. who was in here? kevin, who was doing that? did leave the salon after the shooting but returned. eyewitnesses say he stood over his bleeding mother and a woman trying to help her with a stoic look. minutes later, and eyewitness saw him put a gun in his car. authorities arrested him less than 15 minutes after the shooting. this afternoon, powell stood with a public defender income in county court and was told if you made his $750,000 bond, he would be on a monitor and curfew. he did not say much when the judge asked if he understood he had been charged with attempted first-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. dee b ururch is now in stable condition. her husband told us she underwent successful surgery last night. she is looking good on the health front. live from our downtown fayetteville studios, nicole anchor: thank you. we have more breaking news involving blue cross blue shield of north carolina. steve daniels is in the breaking news center. steve: we have just been leaked this internal e-mail receiving a tip from an insider at blue cross blue shield. the company says because of a couple of incidents, it is increasing security at many locations across the state now. we have been showing you problems all week. there has been a system failure related to new software. thousands of people are having problems. money has been drafted from their checking account that should not have been. it has been a mess for blue cross blue shield customers, the largest health insurance company in north carolina. apparently, there are frustrated customers. according to this internal e-mail, it says they are extremely frustrate customers and as a result, they are increasing security and safety measures at their facilities. departments from chapel hill, durham, fayetteville, charlotte, winston-salem, to add extra security at various blue cross blue shield locations. they are also instructing employees not to let anyone inside nonpublic areas of storefront businesses and at the headquarters if they do not have a badge. this internal e-mail just leaked to the i-team. we are trying to get the response and figure out more about these threats mentioned in this internal e-mail. we will be on it through the evening in the breaking news center. anchor: thank you. one week ago today, we told you about an incentive to encourage probation officers to put offenders back in jail. it is a petition state officials say they shut down when they learned about it. we have been flooding with e-mails and phone calls telling us there is more to the story. jon camp is inside the raleigh news center with new information jon: after our first story about a pizza party that was going to be thrown for wake county parole officers who put the most offenders back in jail using a technique, abc 11 sat down with the program director. she was critical of the idea and said parole officers are not encouraged to lock people up. >> this is the first we have heard of a quick dip competition anywhere in the state. jon: that was last week. the director also said there is no pressure on officers to put people back in jail. but in the weeks since that story aired, we have gotten e-mails and tips which say the same thing. one e-mail put it most plainly. "the director is line." -- "the director is liying. i can assure you pressure is we went back to the director with the e-mails in hand. >> we need to do more education with our managers is that is the message being sent in certain areas, we need to talk with our managers and make sure they understand the concept with which quick dips are used. jon: she says they're going to talk to parole managers about all of this. she thinks much of what we have heard has been taken out of context. we will let you know what the secretary of public safety thinks about it. we will let you know what he said at 6:00. heather: interesting developments. thank you. rescuers are searching off the hawaiian island for 12 crew members on two marine helicopters that collided and went down last night. the choppers were on a nighttime training mission. steve daniels is in the new center with the latest. skies in hawaii last night. these two large marine helicopters crashing midair, plunging down to the ocean where there are 20 to 30 foot seas complicating the search effort. let me show you the video. this is where the search and rescue operation is headquartered on the north shore. you can see helicopters coming back and landing. the honolulu fire department has a boat out. they have been hoping for good news. 12 crewmembers on the teat of helicopters are missing and presumed dead in hawaii now. after the nighttime training mission, they collided midair. little hope of survival sadly for those members of the marines in hawaii. things are complicated. this is the time of year you see big waves off the north shore. there are surfing contests. 40 foot waves on sure they did spot debris about 2.5 miles off the north coast but so far, no sign of being able to recover the 12 missing marines after the midair crash. heather: steve, thank you. this is a look at the damage done after an 87-year-old driver plowed through a store in hillsborough this morning. police tell us the driver was trying to park when he bumped a car and hit the gas pedal instead of the brake. the minivan went through the front of the store and never stopped until he got to the back of the building. two employees were inside. one suffered minor injuries. repairs will need to be made before the store can reopen. police say the driver was not injured and no charges will be filed. that could have been a lot worse. maxx life! anchor: an eyewitness tipped us off to a problem many of you may have experience today at the d.m.v., a power outage at the north carolina department of revenue. we learned it left customers having problems with property tax payments, tag renewals, and for drivers trying to get a new tag. anchor: sweet, kind, and caring. that is how people are remembering an 18-year-old girl found unresponsive inside her durham home. stephanie lopez has the latest on the investigation into what stephanie: the 18-year-old was found unresponsive in her room tuesday and rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead. the durham police department called her death suspicious but they won't say why. her friend tells us she was always giving, volunteering even though she worked a job and took high school and college courses at middle college high school. the school principal says she was a leader in the group students in action and he said it saddened him to think such a bright student's life was cut short. >> it is a tragedy whenever someone this young loses their life, especially someone with such promise and who was so caring. i have never had a student a service-oriented and giving and driven as she was. stephanie: we reached out to the durham police department asking what makes her case suspicious, if they have any information they told us they have no new information to give out at this time. stephanie lopez, abc 11 eyewitness news. anchor: hopefully, they will get to the bottom of that. people around raleigh kicked off the martin luther king holiday today. many call today "freedom friday." i was at an event with state employees and moved by the stories i heard. it all started downtown at the "let freedom ring" ceremony. six times they rang the liberty bell, one time for each decade since dr. martin luther king, jr. delivered his "i have a dream" speech in washington. after the bell, the group walked to first baptist church were the state employees held their annual service. the university choir welcomed this year's theme, honoring the economic contributions blacks have made to north carolina's way of life. the director of the juvenile detention center in goldsboro was awarded one of north carolina's highest honors for his dedication to human and race relations. he spoke of his mother who once worked for the social security administration in goldsboro. >> the first three weeks, being a minority female, nobody wanted to deal with her. at the end of the third week, a farmer came up and said, will you help me? she helped him. after word got out, by the end of the second week, the fifth week actually, people were not only wanting to see her but willing to wait on her. that resiliency so much a hallmark of. mark --dr. martin anna: the retired professor reminded the crowd of what dr. king might want today. >> to rededicate ourselves to fulfill the vision and dream of those who fought and died so we might enjoy those constitutional guarantees granted to all americans. maybe he would implore us to spend more time with our young folks who are in desperate need of guidance. we need more wall models -- role models. anna: we were also at the university for a service to kickoff off the weekend dedicated to dr. king. everyone is encouraged to have a solemn martin luther king lot of work to do. heather: it is a busy afternoon in the breaking news center. we go back to steve daniels following a gunbattle in durham. say police are investigating this is a shooting between three men in the middle of north miami boulevard near 5th street. this is video from our crew on the scene. one man collapsed after getting hit by a bullet. you can see paramedics working to resuscitate him. see that dog? that dog was another part of the problem. according to our crew on the scene, while amerithrax -- paramedics were trying to reset state -- resuscitate the victim, the dog try to bite the first responders. they had to bring in a dog handler. two of the men involved in the gunbattle are on the run. they've taken the man hit to the hospital. he is in the trauma center now. that is what is coming into the breaking news center after what has been reported as a gunbattle on north miami boulevard near 5th street. anchor: thank you. here is some breaking news in we thought this was wild looking at the top of the newscast. a tree fell on powerlines. we were wondering how they were going to do this. the tree was hanging on the lines. we were afraid it was going to snap. cars were driving by on poplar springs church wrote in wake county outside garner. it looks like they have cut the tree instead of having the tree cut the powerlines. they have cut power to about 500 customers in the area. but thankfully, it looks like this might be resolved soon. we have not heard reports of anyone being injured so we are also thankful for that. we will be following this until it is cleaned up. anchor: when we have this kind of weather, sometimes we see it. we wanted to touch base with you. how much rain are you seeing move through the area now? chris: not much. it came in in a hurry and moved still a little bit of light rain. if you are out this evening, need an umbrella. there will be patches of rain. temperatures wl slowly fall. by tomorrow morning, we will be in the upper 30's, safely above freezing so no worries on the roadways. downtown raleigh overcast. the rain has let up. it moved out about three or four hours sooner than what we thought even though there is a bit left behind. 48 in chapel hill. 46 at roanoke rapids. 53 in fayetteville. temperatures safely above freezing. with the breeze and rain, it feels chilly. notice nothing in raleigh. light rain around durham towards fayetteville. the heavier rain that came in around midday now shifting rapidly north and east. we are left with scattered areas of light rain to the west and around the triangle, you see it moving rapidly northeast, the first batch. there is rain from roxboro to chapel hill pressing northeast. we will see light rain through the evening, heavier near the coast. very light. it shuts off quickly into the upstate south carolina. you see it rolling in rapidly. it does not last long. a disturbance over the gulf of mexico has helped shut the rain off. it is still out there in scattered areas across south carolina and western north carolina. through the evening, patches of rain. this model may be robust with widespread rain. i think we will see scattered rain through midnight. it shuts off completely and skies carolina homes. anchor: in both cases, children were living inside. the first case was reported week ago thursday. last night, one wasn't covered in the 3000 block of holly drive in raleigh -- one was a $100,000 memorial fund as he and other state leaders honor 17 their lives in the persian gulf that was 25 years ago. event and explained how he will benefit from today's announcement. reporter: there is plenty of information here about the persian gulf war like flyers and brochures. we learned estate is doing more the governor reads the names of 17 north carolinian service members who lost their lives during the persian gulf war. more than 75,000 north carolinians served during that war like the retired national guard first sergeant. he says it is important to remember the 25th anniversary of the start of the persian gulf war. >> to remember the war we are fighting now has roots in this one and remember how it started. even though it happened fast, some soldiers and personnel were injured and died. the sacrifices they in their families made are not forgotten 25 years later. reporter: the commemoration was at the north carolina museum of history. $100,000 will be used for a traveling exhibit about the war. the funds came from the kuwaiti government in 1992 and are just now being used. they are building the traveling exhibit. in's honoring those who lost their body was found in woods behind a home. investigators made the discovery yesterday. detectives spent more than seven hours collecting evidence. eyewitnesses told our sister station in charlotte several
