ahead of the d.c. primary. what bernie sanders had to say d about it at his rally today in l the district. di fox5 local news at 10 starts right now. four years in prison. is that the punishment for a a teenager who caused an alcohol-related crash thatho killed two of hil-s friends. thanks for joining us tonight, o i'm shawn yancy and i'm tony perkins.s. former wooton high school student a.m. alice learned his faith in a rockville courtroom. fox's marina maracco joins usaco life with more. >>reporter: and definitely an emotional day in court today. a lot of long faces, a lot of tears and people walking out saying that the sentence was simply too light and unjust. the state recommended 12 years out of the 12 year maximum sentence. the judge imposing a sentence on four years jail time to be served for sam alice in the deaths of calvin lee anal ex america, two what the on high recent graduates who left a a house party where alcohol was wa served. sam alice in his toxicology reports showed that he had ha consumed alcohol as well as marijuana, but sam alice pled to guilty to twoto charges of man slut in order to avoid trial. those two charges considered non-violent charges, therefore, the four years served will now turn into 25 percent of them 2 because of the charges will havi to be served. se that's one out of the four years will serve and then he'll be eligible for patrol. during the sentencing face there was gut wrenching evidence as well as this dash cam video that shows the first officers off responding to the scene of the f recollect guided by neighbors ne who had just heard the crash. you see the crewser stop cre directly in front of that mangled vehicle.ma two of the fatal victims, alex l america and calvin lee had beene partially ejected from that car. sam alice who was driving and the front passenger, cameron ca sigh situate, both seriously injured, but both according to doctors have made full recoveries. now sample alice sentenced inced the death both of his classmates. four years is time for mr. ellis to think about the things he'ses done and hopefully he'll be ablb to serve the public goodbye dog the 500 hours of community service t imposed today.d to and it is our hope, that the ignition interlock system that's been ordered for him will prevent him from doing anythingy similar to this in the future. u now, the state wanted a tougher and stiffer sentence saying thah sam ellis showed no remorse. there were hundreds of hours of jail house conversations were co recorded and in none of those th calls did he ever mention the victims or showed what they say was any sort of remoss morse. as for one of the victim's v parents, they did not attend a today's sentencing because theyh say it was simply too painful for them to epidural. they did not submit any sort of letter to the judge. as for alex america's parents am they both spoke in front of the courtroom.oo the courtroom was all silent. everyone crying for the most part as the parents directed themselves to the judge sayinges that t every single day before they went into court theyur touchedt their son's urn r with' the ashes that room and that's a daily reminder how their lives changed forevero the courtroom packed with nearly 200 people. th ey had to move it into other courtroom and two weeks from now we'll be reliving the horrific memory of that crash. first of all, just to make surea i understand this, 20 years butt much of it deferred, four years, but he could possibly serve juse one year in prisons is that wha youpr said? is that correct? c >> that's right because the charges, manslaughter charges are considered, quote, non violent by the state of marylana that means that only 25 percent of the total sentence needs to e be served which would be one be year of the total four years in prison that were asked of sam ellis. > for two lives lost. l there's been a lot of conversation about this this thi afternoon and tonight there's been some outrage. out some folks have also been be talking about the parents who wo hosted the party that sam ellis att we know that those parents were given what some called a slam ol the wrist. are there any changes following that. >> well, the court reporter saying that they were called the quote, cool parents and he believes that he believes thereh should be stiffer sentences in e the state of maryland. unfortunately we know there the aren't really those stiff sentences. he says under the guidelineshe that the law provides he gave sam ellis the most he could. those parents, of course, on a separate judicial district thant this. so it didn't really affect thata as far as the parents. but he says as far as sam ellis gave the most which means that m when he's release from jail for five years he will not be able e to consume any alcohol and drive and for five years he'll have tt breathe into an interlock every time he turns on the ignition og his car. marina maracco reporting. thank you.than compassionate on both sides. on one hand you had transgender kids talking about being uncomfortable using the bathrooms at school. sch heart breaking stories of bullying. on the other hand you hadha parents who talked about concerns over their children being forced to accept these th changes as the new norm. nor one of the parents who was opposed yelled out after transgeneral coach spoke. many others followed.s take a listen. i think it's kind of unfair that transgenders shouldn't be able e to use bathrooms and it may not seem a big deal to those who who aren't transgenders, but to me e it is a big deal. when i was an stpf student i experienced firsthand the kind of harassment that children get from their pierce. t > excusehe me, sir. s human rights for our children. evil. the group who gathered to speak before the board tonight came to thank fairfax county for adding to its policy last may that it will not discriminate on the basis of gender identity, but they are also asking that th regulations now be put into p place to enforce that they want school records to be adjusted so that the preferred pronoun is used for students without any medical proofcal required, particularly on diploma as. they also want training for teachers. they want students to use the t bathrooms and locker rooms to correspond with their gender identity. you are about to hear from one r man who is identified by a young man. we also caught up with one of the parents who stormed out.who he did not want to give his name. they are going to start using the bathrooms that they know the they should go to.o. it makes a whole difference for the community, less suicide,. >> i have a little child. she's afraid of boys and nowow she's got boys coming in the in bathroom much it's not just the bathroom, it's the showers.. it's the locker rooms. roo they could be basically stripinc down. it's not just adults can go in there. that father was upset that heha wasn't able to speak at the meeting. he ended up walking out as you u saw with the other gentlemen ge there. but there's a policy in place where people have to sign up inp advance to speak during the public comments portion of the school board meetings. these are regularly scheduled meetings, in fact. there's also several lawsuits underway in virginia regarding gender identity and those who are for transgender rights t they're concerned that thened school administration is going to wait until those lawsuits are resolved to put in place any a regulations involving schools here fairfax county and they're afraid that could take years.
