tonight authorities are looking for him. >> and police continue to carry out raids all across belgium as they look for people who may be connected to the attacks. so far they've uncovered an explosive device, chemical products and an isis dplag inside one home. we also know nine americans were injured in the attacks. >> reporter: the belgian embassy has been the gathering place. in fact, our cameras were here earlier today when secretary of department of homeland security jay joh with the ambassador. when he was leaving he briefly spoke with reporters today. here's what he had to say. >> expressing my condolences to the belgian people. >> reporter: throughout the day and into the night, people have left flowers and other well wishes and candles outside the embassy and flags are at half staff here. earlier belgium's ambassador spoke to reporters saying belgium is a peaceful country that did not deserve an attack like this. i spoke with a woman from belgium. she didn't want to give her name but stressed even though there is a lot of security in belgian's capital, it's not in the neighborhoods where some believe the terror threat lies. >> you are walking on complex area for everybody for tourists, for everybody normally you can't enter some areas because it's private property. there you can enter everywhere. >> political correct. they don't want to touch minorities. >> back here at home, secretary jay johnson security has been stepped up at airports and at our borders but stresses there is no specific or incredible intelligence to indicate there is a similar plot of an attack here in the united states. that's the latest here sarah simmons, fox >> president obama condemned the attacks while visiting cuba. he pledged america's support, and he said the world must be indy visible in the fight against terror. >> this is yet another reminder that the world must unite. we must be together regardless of nationality of race or faith in fighting against the scourge of terrorism. >> and the president's already ordered all american flags be flown at half staff through saturday out of respect for victims of the brussels attack. >> while there are no credible local threats local law enforcement aren't taking chances. today's metro's police chief met with the fbi to discuss law enforcement efforts. additional patrols and canine sweeps are now in place across the dmv. muriel bowser says riders will see an increase in uniformed riders acr airports are making security more visible. isis has made it no secret that it would like to launch attacks here in the u.s. in fact recently some sympathizers were arrested in northern virginia. marina marraco is live at dulles international with the latest. >> reporter: in recent time northern virginia has seen several high profile arrests connected with isis in this area. one of the most infamous one taking place last year. a 17-year-old actually drove his friend here to dulles international airport. that friend boarded a flight to syria to join isis. that 17-year-old just recently now sentenced to 11 years in federal prison. now in 2015 there were 6 is arrests for isis-related activity here in the u.s. that number now up to 84 arrests in what's left or what's through 2016. a landmark stud washington center on extremism looked at the case of that 17-year-old senior who pled guilty to using twitter as well as bit coin to recruit and raise money for isis. in january 2nd men from woodbridge, virginia were charged with attempting to provide material support to isis and just last week another man in alexandria surrendered at the iraqi turkish border after desserting isis. he produced a virginia driver's license at that border. >> the united states is an enormous target for isis. it's the country that it would like to attack more than any other. fortunately so far it's not shown the capacity to do so, threw bates stamp 'absolutely no doubt at all. there's one target above others that isis would like is the united states. washington, d.c. is clearly a target within that. >> reporter: according to the most recent study done by that center for extremism at washington university just last december, they say that northern virginia has what they call a disproportionate number of isis-related investigations as well as convictions. marina marraco, fox 5 local news. >> several universities from around the area have students studiying abroad in belgium right now. the same goes for students at loyola, maryland. they have 14 undergrads and one employee on a trip about 20 miles east of her new appointment of james edward kyle. he is the new director of saint elizabeth's hospital and his resume is sparking plenty of questions about his qualifications or lack thereof. here tonight at arena stage, even so despite all that, mayor bowser received at least four standing ovations as she talked about everything from education to crime to getting jobs in the district. scores of dc residents came to arena stage tuesday night to hear mayor bowser's state of the district address. >> we had some challenges this past year. too many homicides and too many robberies. so we're approaching the challenge in a number of ways. >> reporter: bowser spoke about public safety. >> we recruited a fire chief from seattle who is very experienced in the things we needed to work on. we implemented the security camera program to keep residences, churches and other we're working toward a 4,000 person police force that looks like the community they serve. >> reporter: the crowd gave the mayor a standing ovation when she talked about her plans to close dc general family shelter. >> closing dc general is the right thing to do. and this is what i know. you believe it too. >> reporter: also outlined in the mayor's speech the state of the schools and the infrastructure. what the mayor did not address was media. nor did she discuss her new appointment, james edward kyle of saint elizabeth's hospital. concerns are in addition to him being inqualified for the job, there are a number of resume red flags. >> this person has issues as far as the hospital that he just came from was closed down with something that i heard. that's not what we need right now. washington, d.c. is in the process of rebuilding. we don't want any negativity to effect. and if that's what tis is getting ready to bring, i don't think it's supposed to be there. >> rhonda johnson is a certified peer specialist in the district. she says reports that hospitals under kyle's supervision hav been shuttered because of negligence are a real concern. >> there is a behavior health movement and we need change in the behavior health system. >> we tried to get a comment from the mayor on her selection and we were told she was not available for comment. however, just moments ago mr. james edward kyle did call into the fox 5 dc news room and he disputes all of the allegations. now we asked people on twitter, do you think the state of the district is good. so far with hundreds of responses, nearly 30% of you say yes and more than 70% say no. tisha lewis, fox 5 local news. >> a little are going to do their show tomorrow. >> we're ready for the show. and i don't see anything really bad. they should be out for a while. the blossoms usually hang around for 4 to 10 days if we don't have a lot of heavy rain, if we don't have a lot of high wind. and certainly the next couple of days fantastic to get down there. so nice to have them out easter week although there will be some pretty good rain on monday. although i would imagine we may see a few of them starting to drop off by monday but the show is going to be great this week down at the tidal basin. sometimes it's nice to go down at night because it's a little easier to park and they're just beautiful and you can easily see them. 70s are on their way so if you are going to make it a day trip, you will not be disa.ed. chesapeake bay. a lot of these places dropped into the 20s last night. they should not be quite that cold tonight because of that wind direction. so we'll keep temperatures in the 40s overnight for
