charges. good evening. i'm brian bolter. >> i'm shawn yancy. the 13 year veteran is accused of lying about an incident in february that landed a teen- ager in jail for nearly four months. fox 5's maureen umeh is working the story. >> corporal donald taylor told investigators his gun went off while he was trying to arrest 19-year-old brian dorn. he said he thought dorn was about to commit a robbery, but surveillance video tells a much different story. >> where's the video tape? they don't want to show it to you because it's egregious. >> reporter: attorney jim bell is fighting mad still looking for justice for his client jim dorn. >> my client should not have been held for something he didn't do. >> reporter: prosecutors dropped all charges against dorn after seeing surveillance video that completely contradicts what 13 year veteran corporal donald taylor says happened at this brentwood gas station february 3rd. taylor told investigators while he was trying to arrest dorm who he says was about to rob the station, dorm lurched for his service gun and it went off, but prosecutors say the tape shows taylor accosting dorm from behind blocks from the gas station, then hitting him on the head with his gun causing it to discharge. fox 5 spoke with dorm shortly after his release in may. >> i thought i was going to be shot. >> reporter: did you think these guys were robbers or what? >> i didn't know what he was. >> reporter: did they have say we're police? >> he never said nothing to me even to the point of putting the handcuffs on me he never said nothing on me. >> reporter: a $10 million lawsuit has been filed against prince george's county calling for more transpansy, something police say they're working hard to ensure. >> in the grand scheme of things not on not does the police department want to get this right, but the state's attorney's office certainly wants to get this right before they move forward with the prosecution. >> the reality of it is when you are a sworn officer, a government worker, you work for us the people and we want to know why is it ng? >> corporal taylor has been charged with second degree assault and three additional charges. he will answer to those charges august 24th. his police powers are suspended. monday he has a hearing to determine if he stays on duty with or without pay while prosecution is penning. -- pending. charges come one week after a grand jury indicted another prince george's county police officer, corporal ricky ade accused of assault which allegedly occurred during a police chase in august last year. a d.c. man is charged in the murder of an arlington jewelry store murder. james caroline was arrested on probation violence yesterday. the murder was added today. he's accused of killing tommy wong during a robbery last week. caroline is suspected of robbing a d.c. jewelry store in june. no one was hurt in that robbery. hall of fame baseball player cal ripken jr. broke his silence today on the kidnapping of his mother who was abducted at gunpoint last week from her home in aberdeen maryland for 23 hours. fox 5's john henrehan has the latest. >> reporter: at orioles park in camden yards cal ripken jr. told reporters there are two reasons he is talking publicly about the gunpoint abduction and safe return of his elderly mother from her home in aberdeen. first, the family has been bomb badded with questions about how 70 -- bombarded with questions about how 74-year-old violet ripken is doing. >> my mom has gone to her granddaughter's softball games, continued to live her life. she's gone to the beauty parlor in ways she wants to and she refuses to let that affect it to that point, but, you know, from a mental traumatic standpoint she's still a little shaky and we're all a little shaky. >> reporter: the gunman who abducted and bound vy ripken and drove her lincoln around maryland for about 23 hours was taped by a security camera at a wal-mart in anne arundel county. he's described as a white male with short brown layer standing 5 danny weighing 180 -- hair standing 5' tan weighing 180. police say the wide distribution of these photos has generated leads but none resulting in arrest. that was the second reason for cal ripken jr.'s meeting with reporters. >> if you know anything about the case, if you know anything about the identity of the person in the photos, the sketch, i would encourage all of you to call in and report what you know. >> reporter: both cal ripken and police from aberdeen say they just don't know about the motivation of the armed kidnapper. no ransom demand was ever made during the abduction. clear channel is posting suspect photos on five of its electronic billboards in maryland in a further effort to generate leads in the case. cal ripken confirmed in general the kidnapper treated his mother in a civil manner. he says there was not much conversation between the gunman and the elderly woman who was bound in the back seat of her car. and cal run ken said for the moment his -- ripken said for the moment his mom is not living in her home in aberdeen, maryland. john henrehan, fox 5 news. prince george's county woman will spend four years in prison for causing a deadly hit and run crash. a judge sentenced christy littleford of upper marlboro today suspending three years of her sentence. she hit natasha pettigrew back in 2010 and drove home 3 miles with the victim's bike under her car. an indecent exposure charge dropped against gary giordano. giordano was arrested in annapolis this past may after police found him and a woman partially naked in parished car. prosecutors say giordano was covered with -- a parked car. prosecutors say giordano was covered with a towel and so they dropped the charge. he has not been charged in the aruba case. the crowds outside chick- fil-a restaurants nationwide may have looked a little different today. gay rights advocates called for a national kiss-in to protest the company's president's stand on gay marriage. fox 5's audrey barnes has the story now. >> the crowd outside the silver spring chick-fil-a was certainly enthusiastic cheering every gay and lesbian couple who locked lips in press, but not everyone was happy about the -- in protest, but not everyone was happy about the public display of affection. participants were encouraged to kiss a fellow demonstrator of the same sex. there was plenty of that going on. manufacture the participants said chick -- many of the participants said chick-fil-a president dan cathy is entitled to his view, but protesters say they are very much against the company funneling millions of dollars to anti-gay groups. >> chick-fil-a donates money to anti-gay organizations that lobby against employment protections, housing protection, marriage equality, thongs that impact everyday life for gay people -- things that impact every day life for gay and lesbian people around the country. >> you raise your kids 1 way and you come out here and see this crap going on. >> that kiss-in comes two days after thousands of customers came out for a chick-fil-a appreciation day at about 1,600 locations. company officials said sales that day were record setters. at the silver spring chick-fil- a tonight the kiss-in didn't seem to have an effect on business. the line was nearly out the door. we'll have up into the 90s. we're used to this, though. todaying a national was 90 since, dulles -- today. reagan national was 96, dulles was 91 degrees, bwi marshall was 92. at least for national the heat index for a time today did push 100 degrees. it was definitely hot, steamy, yes, for this weekend continuing to be on the warm side with temperatures well up into the 90s. tomorrow we stand a risk for some thunderstorms, doesn't look like we'll have widespread severe weather. you can see that red area for tomorrow is way back out into the midwest, but as we get into sunday, a frontal system will get closer to us. as that frontal system gets here late sunday afternoon and into sunday evening, we'll have some showers, thunderstorms and right now for sunday we are outlooked for the possibility of some severe thunderstorms. so that is one to watch. hopefully that front will get through here and bring us a little bit of relief for next week, but it is a summertime cold front and they don't always cooperate, but just keep in mind it's still going to be a little on the hot and humid side this weekend and sunday is the day we really have to watch for widespread severe weather. we'll talk them around town, but do you know what they do in the air? i'm beth parker, an inside look at a rescue that probably saved a life. >> plus setting the bar higher in d.c. schools, why more teachers could be fired on the news edge at 11:00. an amazing rescue caught on camera at shenandoah national park, the u.s. park police making a critical rescue after a man fell 70 feet off a cliff. he was so deep in the park it would have taken hours to get him out on a stretcher. there is another way. >> reporter: when this is your office, a day's work can certainly get the adrenaline flowing. >> 40-year-old man fell 70 feet onto the rocks unconscious but breathing. >> reporter: a call for help from shenandoah national park. the u.s. park police were on the way in a helicopter called eagle one. the rescue is captured on video. >> i was on the left side tethered with my life vest. >> there's a lot of trees and rock. it got pretty narrow in there. if you make a grievous error, it's not very forgiving. >> reporter: even dropping the rope was difficult. a helicopter like this under the sibs can only hover for about five minutes before there's too much stress on the engine. so they have a small window of opportunity to make this rescue happen. on the ground rangers from shenandoah national park had loaded the patient into the basket. >> when we got the this ups up from the people on the ground he was -- thumbs up from the people on the ground he was packaged safely, we began to hoist. >> that's my foot sticking out making sure the patient doesn't hit the skids on the helicopter. >> reporter: it's the first rescue since becoming a paramedic. >> you can only do it so many times in the field here with a dummy in the basket. >> reporter: they completed the rescue under the five minute window and rushed him to the hospital. >> that's a good feeling to know you possibly saved the guy's life. >> it felt very good. i sent a text to my wife. >> reporter: a pretty satisfying day at the office. in washington beth parker, fox 5 news. things are back to normal at reagan national tonight. airport operations shut down about a half hour this afternoon after a u.s. airways jet expensed a problem right before takeoff. an engine heat warning light came on. the plane was headed to new york. passengers were put on other flights. no one was hurt. she is bethesda's golden girl, katie ledecky the local swimming star who took the gold today at the london olympics. laura evans has more. >> katie ledecky took the gold in the women's 800-meter freestyle. on her facebook page her brother has been posting the updates and pictures. one says well done because she won the goad today. tonight friend at home are calling her -- the gold today. tonight friends at home are calling her a young town hero. >> reporter: the youngest member of team usa, katie ledecky who just finished her freshman year in bethesda is one of the usa gold medal winners. her friend started on swim team when they were both just 6. katie still holds most of the records here. >> she's so grounded and just wants everyone to treat her like a normal person and the swimming is just like a side thing for her in terms of how she want people to treat her. >> reporter: friends say despite katie's grueling training leading up to the olympics she never complained, rarely even talked about. it her friend hanna green who spoke with us via skype from maine says katie loves swimming so much it's never been a sacrifice. >> her training schedule leading up to leaving for omaha, it was eat, sleep, train and then eat, pack, sleep, train. >> reporter: and it paid off. just this morning hanna sent katie an e-mail, the reply from katie before her 800-meter freestyle race? a bit uncharacteristic from her normally calm and composed e- mails. >> she sent me an e-mail that said it's go time with like 50 exclamation points. so as you can tell, she was very, very pumped up for this meet today. >> then to get gold it blew me away. >> she definitely will not change as a person. she is so grounded and has such a great head on her shoulders. i look up to her every day. >> katie beat janet evans record set in 1989 and her first major competition, shawn, the olympic tryouts. pretty impressive. >> can you believe that? that's an understatement. thank you. you may remember this with the man there in the blue about the hop side of darrell sweet. he died friday after being found unconscious suffering from a head wound on minnesota avenue northwest. if you recognize the man in the video, call d.c. police. drew peterson's former sister-in-law took the stand in his murder trial today. she says kathleen savio told drew peterson he'd kill her. >> reporter: former illinois police officer drew peterson's murder trial entering a fourth day. prosecutors putting the sister of the victim on the stand. peterson 58 is charged with first degree murder in the 2004 death of his third wife kathleen savio found dead in a bathtub in her home. the victim's sister testified savio told her she believed pete son was going to kill her -- peterson was going to kill her. savio said she was convinced she wouldn't live long enough to see the property settlement in her divorce from peterson, the witness also testifying savio asked her to care for her two children after her death. the defense giving a preview of their strategy. >> joe will cross-examine her, go through her actions and like a lot of things in this case, her actions the the way you would expect someone under the circumstances to have acted and he'll bring that out. >> reporter: defense attorneys also talking about peterson's take on the trial. >> i think he's pleased with the way things are going so far. the evidence isn't going in one sided certainly. we're getting our points across and they're getting theirs across. >> reporter: this afternoon the judge recessed court until tuesday because of a sick juror. a male juror was repeatedly cough and testimony was interrupted several times. peterson is also a suspect in the want 7 disappearance of his -- in the 2007 disappearance of his fourth wife stacy peterson. he denies any wrongdoing in that case and has not been chaned. -- charged. floyd mayweather jr. is a free man tonight, the boxer released from a las vegas jail this morning after serving two months of a 90 day sentence on domestic violence charges. the undefeated fighter ranked the world's richest athlete for 2011. he pled guilty to misdemeanor charges stemming from an attack problems, among them cuts to defense programs, a bill aimed at protecting the nation from cyber attacks and providing a massive relief package for farmers struggling with the drought. as fox 5's tom fitzgerald reports, that's not all lawmakers left on the table. >> reporter: they came streaming down the steps of the capitol thursday night just moments after voting to take a break. soon after many lawmakers headed off on the heels of an argument over whether to leave at all. virginia democratic congressman gerald connolly voted with 187 democrats to keep the house in session and cancel the august recess. >> we actually went out one day earlier. we were supposed to be in session today. >> reporter: congress adjourned without finishing work on major issues. lawmakers never reached a deal to cut the deficit, so the poison pill of a half billion dollars in defense cuts looms at the end of the year, 2.1 million jobs at risk. >> the motion is not agreed top of the. >> reporter: but in the democratically controlled senate a bill to increase cyber security also failed joining issues like tax cuts, post office reform, even a farm bill hanging in limbo. >> the idea that we've got a crisis,
